With 50 staff members and over 300 volunteers to care for up to 3,000 animals per year. La Plata County Humane Society was established as a 501(c) 3 animal shelter in 1971. It was created to provide shelter for homeless animals, to rescue animals in distress, to assist in the investigation and prosecution of reported cruelty and abuse, to attempt to find homes for unwanted animals, and to encourag

e kindness and responsibility toward all living things through humane education. The Thrift Store was established in 1990 to raise monies for the homeless animals. We accept donations 7 days a week through our donation center on site. The Thrift Store supports local non-profits in the community by donating clothing, toiletries and vouchers to the Volunteers of America (VOA), La Plata Family Coalition and the Women’s Resource Center. The Shelter & Thrift Store is directed by nine elected board members. In 2000, we added a Medical Director to staff to insure that all animals are health checked, spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and have all the care/needs before leaving our facility. Help Them. One Paw at a Time.

It's time for our Pet of the Week from the La Plata County Humane Society brought to you by Pet Haus 'Everything for Your Pet Under One Woof!

The Pet of the Week is an ongoing initiative to find homes for our furry friends at the La Plata County Humane Society. Please help us by sharing and spreading the word!

Let's meet Mota! She is a one-year-old Female Pitbull Mix.

If there was a kissing booth Mota would be the one giving the most kisses away. Mota is loveable and cuddly like the softest velvet pillow. Her ears feel like a lamb or the namesake lamb's ear plant. Mota is still gaining trust with new experiences and people and can be shy at first. But once she warms up she is quite devoted and affectionate. Mota is a busy gal, she loves her toys and keeps herself occupied with tennis balls. She also enjoys fetch and going on long walks on the trails. She's a pint sized pup with the biggest heart. Those who meet her think she is still a puppy because she is so small. With loving support, Mota can be quickly encouraged while navigating her new world. Mota has so much love to give to her future adopter.
From another one of Mota's foster friends: Mota stayed with us for a few days and she is an absolute sweetheart! She is a very gentle soul, and she is looking for a gentle human to share all her love with. It takes Mota a little time to get to know and trust new people, but once she does trust you, you will see her full sweet personality. She will lay with her head in your lap, she will give you lots of kisses, and she will greet you with a full body tail wag. Mota is great at walking on a leash, she is very calm in the car, and she was very well behaved in the house. She loves chasing chipmunks!! When she is interested in something, her ears stand up and one is higher than the other, which gives her a very inquisitive look. It is so cute!

Early giving for Colorado Gives Day is happening now. This is an important time of giving for La Plata County Humane Society. Our goal this year is to raise $100,000 by close of business, Tuesday, December 10th. All funds raised through Colorado Gives in 2024, will be used to support essential care for the pets in our community in 2025.
Your generous gift will allow LPCHS to continue to save pets from abuse, provide essential medical services to pets in need, and to find loving homes to thousands of abandoned pets in our growing community. Visit swcogives.org to give now. The more we raise, the more LPCHS will receive from the First Bank Incentive Fund.
In 2024, we once again saved over 90% of the animals in our care; earning LPCHS recognition as a no-kill shelter!
We are proud to announce that since 2019, we have increased the number of pets served through our low-cost clinics by 97%! So far this year, we have served more than 1,500 pets compared to just 822 in 2019.

Happy Halloween! We hope everyone has a howling good time, but it's important to keep the safety of your pets in mind. The Pet Poison Helpline sees a 12% increase in emergency calls during the week of Halloween. Many Halloween candies, including chocolate, raisins, and sugar-free treats, are toxic to pets. Have fun and stay safe out there! 🎃

We wanted to share how little Thread is doing in Foster! If you are interested in becoming a foster, check out the for more information 🐾

“Thread has been with us for almost 2 weeks, and he is a really amazing pup! He hasn’t had any accidents in the house, he is quiet at night, he is calm in the car, and he is a very quick learner! He is great at walking on a leash, and he now knows how to sit. Thread loves chasing sticks and balls, enjoys good scratches behind the ear, and likes resting his head in your lap. If you sit on the floor, he will try to curl up in your lap. He’s still young, so it’s fun to see him discover new things, like the smell of a chipmunk or ice on the top of a puddle.” - -From his foster.

We had so much fun with Mutts in the Mountains over the weekend! This is Gretchen and her volunteer buddy wanted to share about their adventure: "Gretchen, always super active, was very excited to get out this morning. She greeted the other pups with an engaging and friendly bark in the parking lot.

She did not hesitate one second to hop in the back seat of my SUV. She seemed ready for an adventure.

Once at our final destination, she pretty much led the pack and pulled for a while. It wasn't until we reached the end of the trail that she decided to mingle with the other 3 dogs. She was very friendly, wagging her tail, giving kisses. She was totally relaxed after that break and welcomed a couple of cookies. Every pup got to drink before we all got back in the car. Gretchen was really calm once we got going and she laid down on the way back, confident and a bit tired. Totally well mannered. It was a totally successful experience."

The Shelter & Thrift Store are directed by nine elected board members. In 2000, a veterinarian was added to our staff to ensure that all animals have a health and wellness check, are spayed or neutered, provided initial vaccines, implanted with an identification microchip and have the best quality care before leaving our facility. We are committed to helping animals become their best selves before they are adopted into forever homes. Help Us, Help Them, One Paw at a Time.
