With 50 staff members and over 300 volunteers to care for up to 3,000 animals per year. La Plata County Humane Society was established as a 501(c) 3 animal shelter in 1971. It was created to provide shelter for homeless animals, to rescue animals in distress, to assist in the investigation and prosecution of reported cruelty and abuse, to attempt to find homes for unwanted animals, and to encourag

e kindness and responsibility toward all living things through humane education. The Thrift Store was established in 1990 to raise monies for the homeless animals. We accept donations 7 days a week through our donation center on site. The Thrift Store supports local non-profits in the community by donating clothing, toiletries and vouchers to the Volunteers of America (VOA), La Plata Family Coalition and the Women’s Resource Center. The Shelter & Thrift Store is directed by nine elected board members. In 2000, we added a Medical Director to staff to insure that all animals are health checked, spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and have all the care/needs before leaving our facility. Help Them. One Paw at a Time.

Let's Meet Maple!
Female Catahoula Leopard dog/Terrier, American Pit Bull Mix - 3 years old

Maple is a sweet girl that loves people but would do best in a house hold with no kids. Maple loves walks but needs to learn some leash manners. She also loves to play with squeaky toys. Want to meet Maple? Call the front desk today and schedule an appointment to meet her!

Here is what her foster buddy had to say about their recent outing:
Returning to LPCHS after nearly 3 weeks away, I was confronted with a lot of new snouts. Many of my favorite pups had been adopted over the holidays, the likes of Gretchen, Buttercup, Francisco, Hank and many more. Yeah! It did not take me long to select a handful of new faves. This week I chose Maple, a stray. Needless to say, Maple was super excited to go on an outing yesterday. Big tail wagging, grinning, she jumped in the rear of my car without hesitation, already a very good sign. She did hop on one of the passengers' bucket seats during the ride to 3 Springs but sat quietly, taking it all in. Maple still needs to learn some leash manners but who could blame her excitement, out in the open with so much to investigate, one bush at a time. We did practice some and after 2 miles, Maple got the hang of it, for the most part. Once, an unleashed dog approached her, menacing and barking. I had asked her to stay. She did not budge or bark or lunge. In fact, she clearly indicated that she would have preferred to play. She was rewarded for her excellent behavior with cookies that she took gently. We covered 4 miles on a gorgeous day and we had lunch outdoors. Maple is obedient and wants to please. She is also extremely affectionate and confident. She loves the outdoors and car rides. Her very intense and inquisitive stare makes you melt. Her coat is very soft and she is full of life.
She came as a stray on 01.01.2025.

The Thrift Store helps to support other local non-profits in the community by donating clothing, toiletries and vouchers to the Volunteers of America (VOA), La Plata Family Coalition, the Women’s Resource Center and many other non-profits. The Shelter & Thrift Store are directed by nine elected board members. In 2000, a veterinarian was added to our staff to ensure that all animals have a health and wellness check, are spayed or neutered, provided initial vaccines, implanted with an identification microchip and have the best quality care before leaving our facility. We are committed to helping animals become their best selves before they are adopted into forever homes. Help Us, Help Them, One Paw at a Time.
