Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Archi is here to say that he, along with many of our pets, would looove to sneak some turkey, ham, stuffing or whatever is left uncovered tomorrow… so please keep all those tasty dishes out of paw’s reach!

Foods like onions and garlic can be very toxic to our furry friends and rich foods like ham can cause gastrointestinal issues like pancreatitis.

Our office will be closed Thursday and open again at 8am on Friday. If you need help after hours, please call the rotating Durango emergency on-call line (this number can be found on our voicemail message at 970-247-4701). If you think your pet has ingested something they shouldn’t have, please call the Pet Poison Hotline at 888-426-4325.

It’s Vet Tech Appreciation Week! Jill Brazell CVT is our amazing Lead Tech and has been working with the Baker’s Bridge Team for THIRTY YEARS! We love her ever-positive attitude and were so happy to celebrate her officially receiving her license last year. Jill loves playing agility, going on spontaneous road trips, mid-day iced teas and singing goofy songs at work. She’s usually leading a pack of border collies wherever she goes and does much-needed awesome work with Western Border Collie Rescue. Next time you see Jill, make sure to share your appreciation for all she does for our animals! ♥️🐾

It’s Vet Tech Appreciation Week! Becky Caldwell RVT is a licensed technician who has been practicing in the field of vet med for 20+ years and received her Technician’s License 15 years ago. She is a critical member of our team and is often known as the Cat Whisperer. Becky has an adorable Heeler named Indy (also known as Indiana Bones, aka Dogter Jones), and two perfect cats Campbell and Archi! Becky loves to hike in her time off and creates crochet masterpieces. Give Becky a big thank you next time you see her!

Max and Mando would like to make a quick PSA: with our recent warm temperatures, mosquitoes are still out and about, which means that heartworm is still a risk! Make sure to give your dogs a dose of heartworm preventative for October and early November. The monthly medication retroactively treats for heartworm infection, so it’s important to give the last dose one month post their last exposure for the year. If you have questions about this or need a refill, please give us a call!

Pet owners and followers everywhere, we ask you to please vote NO on Proposition 129.

We at Baker’s Bridge Veterinary Clinic follow the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Colorado Veterinary Medical Association in opposing the Colorado ballot proposition that would add the veterinary professional associate (VPA) category to veterinary medicine. The measure would allow a new designation of midlevel practitioner to make diagnoses and perform surgeries with minimal training, thereby compromising care and endangering animals' lives and well-being.

While this ballot proposal attempts to alleviate the veterinary shortage we face to offer more affordable care, it has many hidden dangers.

The training program would be an online degree with a brief internship, a far less rigorous curriculum than veterinary school. These professionals would be able to perform surgery without extensive knowledge to troubleshoot and manage complications ultimately affecting our pets’ safety. These practitioners would practice under accountability of the supervising veterinarian thus putting their license on the line if and when any and all mistakes are made. There is no regulatory agency or standardized test developed to ensure proper education and readiness to assist, and there are no other states with this professional degree, therefore graduates of this program would have limited job security without any options outside the state of Colorado. Lastly, because this professional would work under a veterinarian’s license and authority, it will not dramatically reduce work load to appropriately alleviate the veterinary shortage.

Baker’s Bridge Vet Clinic said goodbye to one of our own. Last week, we lost Albert, our precious little orange boy who has been with us since he left Trimble Hot Springs in 2020. Albert was quite simply, the best. We all adored him. Albert filled us with laughs, constantly knocking over drinks, dumping lunches on the floor, and voraciously eating Zia chips and Cheetos, sometimes getting his head stuck in the bag. He could rock every Halloween costume. He was known to play random YouTube channels on Dr. Marshall’s computer. He demolished cases of temptations. He was so feisty in the most endearing way and if you’ve visited us, you may have heard the frequent “Albert, stop!” echoing from the back. We’re sad we don’t know his actual birthday, but we think he was likely 21 and legal but never got his BBVC margarita. We miss him already and are so grateful for our 4 years with him.
