NewSoil Vermiculture LLC is seeking a part-time employee to assist with farm operations, filling customer orders, and assisting with operations at the Durham Farmers Market. NewSoil was founded in 2013 with the mission of utilizing vermicomposting to divert food waste from the landfill and fill the need for more sustainable soil management practices. Through this work, individuals will learn a great deal about sustainable practices like composting, vermicomposting, and developing partnerships with community organizations, vendors and farmers.
Description of Duties
Individuals should be prepared to work with garden tools, lift bins and/or packages up to 20 pounds, and work directly with compost and composting worms. Individuals should also have a valid driver's license and be comfortable driving a full-size pickup truck with trailer attachments to pick up supplies and make deliveries as needed. They should also have good communication skills and be willing to engage the public about NewSoil products while at the market.
Duties include:
● Operation of compost sifting machines and power tools as needed;
● Managing the compost windrow including adding feedstock, taking and documenting temperature readings, adding mulch and moisture as needed;
● Spreading compost and dry feedstock in worm bins;
● Filling compost and worm orders for customers;
● Helping set-up and break-down of equipment and facilities:
● Loading and unloading supplies as needed;
● Assisting with set-up and break-down at the Saturday morning farmers market in downtown Durham;
● Engaging customers and public intermittently to answer questions regarding NewSoil products and services;
● Safe operation of NewSoil vehicles and trailer equipment in picking up and delivering supplies/orders; and,
● Becoming familiar with procedures and protocols for safety when working with livestock and compost.
Requirements
● Display interest in learning about sustainable environmental practices
● Punctuality
● Valid driver’s license
● Dress appropriately for work involving soil, bending/standing and garden tools
● Conversational Spanish language skills are very helpful, but not required.
● Representatives from underserved communities and communities of color are strongly encouraged to apply
Worksite Location(s)/Schedule
NewSoil’s base facility is located on a working farm and land cooperative in north Durham. Normal hours of operation are between 9am and 5pm. We also participate in the Durham Farmers Market during spring and summer. Shifts may vary based on tasks, but typically involve 4-8 hour blocks Monday through Saturday, up to 20 hours per week.
