Our surgery patient of the week is Brunson! Brunson is a 5 month old Bernese Mountain Dog who was noted to have a foul odor in his mouth and a swelling was noticed by his owners. On exam we were able to identify an abnormality with a lower molar. Brunson was quickly added to our dental schedule, where we identified an abnormal baby tooth that was causing an abscess over the adult tooth. We were able to remove the infected baby tooth while keeping the adult tooth intact. Normally in young dogs, the baby tooth’s roots should dissolve and the crown will fall off on its own, but in Brunsons case the roots of that tooth never dissolved which is what allowed the abscess to form. Brunson is healing well and expected to recover fully with no issues to his adult teeth! This is a perfect example why we should be checking our puppies mouths and getting them used to having their teeth looked at starting at a young again. Brunson was an excellent patient and we are glad his mouth is feeling much better!

Our surgery patient of the week is Willie! This handsome boy came in this week for a Sanos reapplication treatment. The SANOS® dental sealant is a gingival dental sealant for dogs and cats that seals the subgingival gum line (gingival sulcus) against the formation of plaque. It is proven to last up to 6 months. Our doctors recommend to come in once a year for a full dental with radiographs and sealant as well as every 6 months for just a professional cleaning and Sanos reapplication, especially for our patients who struggle with dental disease. Willie’s teeth are able to remain healthy with limited plaque thanks to the use of this product and routine cleanings.

Our Surgery Patient of the week is Titan! Titan is a special patient of ours, because he is a diabetic! He wears a Freestyle Libre sensor which continually monitors his blood sugar and he receives daily insulin. Titan was here today for a dental procedure and had several teeth extracted. Maintaining dental care is especially important for our diabetic patients, because severe dental disease can worsen diabetes and vise versa diabetes can cause dental disease. We are always happy to see Titan, he did very well today!
