Pets age much faster than humans, and it's important that we do our part to support their physical and mental health as they go into their golden years.
For dogs over the age of 7, and cats over the age of 10, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) agree that there are three main factors that make a huge impact on their long-term health.
🩺More frequent wellness exams - with older pets, catching changes in blood work, joints and mobility, and things like urinary or behavioral issues early is important to keep them comfortable and happy moving forward. Both guidelines recommend wellness checks every 6 months to stay on top of any issues that may arise.
🐾Age-appropriate nutrition - just like humans, senior pets are generally less active and require less calories. They also have age specific nutritional needs that can be supported through therapeutic or prescription diets. Maintaining a healthy weight for your senior pet can significantly improve joint health and reduce risk of chronic pain.
🧠Cognitive & physical support - much like humans, senior pets need continued cognitive and physical stimulation to keep their bodies healthy. Things like environmental enrichment, puzzle toys, and proper pain medications to help them continue to do what they love, all help keep your pet happy and healthy.
