t’s and we want to introduce you to Penguin! Penguin has been with us since July 7th and has truly blossomed in foster care! Her foster tells us; “She loves people and has gently played with several children around 6 years old. She would make a loving companion to both individuals and families. She is on the younger side so can be energetic when first meeting but quickly calms down. Her initial energy may be too much for some dogs and cats but she has gotten along well with other friendly dogs and is curious (but not aggressive) towards cats. I think with more training/acclimating she would do well with cats too. True to her pittie nature, her energy is spent in short bursts and she would be happy to curl up next to you on the couch after a short walk. She would make a great home office buddy for anyone working from home.
She is very good in her crate and has not had any accidents while in my home. She is a fantastic rider in cars, patiently sitting in the back seat and without a peep for up to 2.5 hours. She even went on a boat recently and has natural sea legs! She walks well on a leash but does get excited when she sees another dog. With some leash training, I think she will be a great walking companion. Penguin is the type of dog that seeks to please so I imagine she will be very trainable.
She just wants to be loved and made to feel safe & secure.” Don’t we all?
If Penguin seems like the perfect fit, then stop by the shelter Saturday from 10am-12pm to meet her in person!
Join us this Saturday, 10-2pm, for our final day! In addition to our $5 Dog Adoption special, we will be offering a free leash and collar with every adoption! But the fun doesn’t stop there, we will have our prize wheel for more prizes and Hills will be on hand with swag bags for every adopter! If you can’t make it, or you aren’t in the market for a new pet, help us spread the word by sharing on social and let’s this week!
Meet our Pet of the Week, Brodie Ray!!! I’m a good ol’ southern boy named Brodie Ray! I’m a fun, playful, excitable guy. Sometimes my excitement gets the best of me–I can be a little rough and rude when I see friends (and everyone’s my friend!). Basic training should fix that right up. I LOVE toys and hot dogs and a cool tile floor–all the best that life has to offer. I’d love to have lots of exercise and enrichment during the day and watch the stars with my person at night. Are you in??
Kids: 10+, jumpy/mouthy, worried by novel objects, needs object exchange for toys
Dogs: Intense face but playful, bit rough, able to take breaks/shake off. Slow intros, too much for some dogs
We are SO excited to announce that for the rest of the week, you can adopt one of our amazing dogs for just $5! 🎉🎉🎉 Help us clear the shelter by adopting your new best friend now 💙

Meet Casper! This gorgeous all white, yellow/green eyed beauty has been with us since June 6, 2024. At 5 years old, he came in as a stray and during his medical evaluation we discovered he is FeLV positive. Casper is a great lap cat who is content to just sit and purr with you all day. (Check out Casper enjoying just that with our Cat Tech, Mary!) His cool, calm and collected demeanor is perfect for a house where he can be the main character and enjoy all the cuddles. Don’t let this sweet guy slip away, stop by and adopt him today!
Casper has tested positive for FelV . Even though he is positive for Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV), he is capable of living a full, healthy life. This virus can suppress his immune system, potentially making him more susceptible to other infections. While there is no cure for FeLV, with regular veterinary care cats can go on to live a relatively healthy and long lifestyle. The disease can be transmissible to other cats, but not to people or other species. Ideally, FeLV-positive cats should either live with other cats that have tested positive for FeLV to reduce the risk of spreading the disease or in a single cat household. Thank you for considering opening your heart and home to such a sweet and wonderful as Casper!💘
Adoptable Bliss is today’s feature! This girl was nervous in the shelter and has opened up with her foster family. She’d love a family to help build her confidence and snuggle with! Could that be you?

Meet our Pet of the Week, Barramundi! Helloooo! If you live life at a 10 out of 10, I’m your guy! I’m an enthusiastic, playful, active boy who loves to be on the go. I’m excited to meet new people, but it takes me a bit to feel comfortable. I like to have fun with a soft toy and get gentle affection. I’ll need basic training and leash manners, calming exercises, and lots of activities to keep me busy. Let’s hit the road!
Kids: 10+, anxious, jumpy, grabs leash, go slow
Dogs: Forward, high arousal to start, rough play. Prefers dogs w/ similar play styles
Ava arrived last February at one of our foster families’ doors, hungry, pregnant, and ready to give birth to four beautiful kittens! She did an amazing job as a mom, and once everyone was ready, they got spayed/neutered and brought to the shelter to find their forever homes🏡. All her kittens were happily adopted, but she is still waiting!
Ava, who is 1 and a half years old, comes across as a shy girl, but once she warms up and trusts you, she is the most lovable, cuddly, purring, sweet kitty you’ve ever met 😻. Once she bonds with someone, she will follow them around everywhere, just to hang out with you. She LOVES catnip and playing with wand toys: feathers and ribbons are her favorites! She would probably prefer to be an only child. 😸 Could Ava be your new best friend?
It’s Monday 🎉📆 Which means it’s time to mark your calendars!!

Meet Snap! Snap has been with us since mid May. He was an owner surrender along with his friend who was appropriately named Crackle. Crackle found his home but unfortunately Snap is still looking for his. Can you help us find Snap a home to call his own? Not only does he have the most beautiful markings, but he is also incredibly sweet and soft and loving.
Snap has been exposed to FelV. But even though he been exposed to Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV), he is capable of living a full, healthy life. Because the virus can suppress his immune system, making him more susceptible to other infections, FeLV-positive cats should either live with other cats that have tested positive for FeLV or in a single cat household. While there is no cure for FeLV, with regular veterinary care cats can go on to live a relatively healthy and long lifestyle.
Instagram vs reality featuring our fan favorite, Truffle!! 😍 This guy has been at the shelter since January and our volunteers and fosters have nothing but amazing things to say about him. He’s easy going, great in a car, and loves to go on adventures. Are you looking for the perfect pup to add to your pack? Consider Truffle!

Meet our Pet of the Week, Blue Jay!
Hello! I’m a sweet, sensitive, stoic boy looking for a gentle home and lots of love. I need time to adjust to new situations–I hope you’ll be patient with me! I really do like people, especially ones who will play ball with me and give me back and shoulder rubs. I’d love to have some confidence building and a cozy safe space that’s all mine. Will you visit me?
Kids: 8+, stoic, needs gentle kids that go slow with him
Dogs: Tolerates rude dogs, prefers a gentle sniffing partner. Slow intros

Looking to add another dog to your home? Let us introduce you to Norm! 👋 (whose adoption fee is also currently waived!)
This darling man is all you’ve ever needed and more. Norm first came to us in April as a stray. He was categorized as medically emaciated, only weighing 29 pounds. He has since put on a healthy amount of weight is estimated to be around 40 pounds. He’ll still need a good healthy diet and people to show him that this world isn’t so scary after all.
After a recent outing to , he showed us calm and happy behavior, even in the unfavorable heat. He was just simply happy to be there. This wiggly guy is affectionate and sweet and loves to be with people, soaking in all the attention he can get. He prefers gentle dogs but is great with young children.
Norm really seems to be the best and we hope he’ll scoot his way into your home soon. He’s also feeling waived thanks to our campaign so make sure to RUN and send in your adoption application for Norm today!

Meet our feature, Pepper!
Pepper, shortened from his original shelter name of Banana Pepper, is a big, lab mix puppy. This handsome 2 year old stands at a statuesque 32 inches tall and weighs 80lbs. Pepper arrived at APS on 10/26/23. Upon his arrival it was noted that he had a large wound on his neck, believed to be from an embedded collar. We quickly got him cleaned up and welcomed him to the APS family.
Pepper enjoyed his time at the shelter getting healthier and playing with volunteers. But as the days passed and no potential adopters came, Pepper started to get stressed in the shelter environment. We recognized that Pepper needed time away from the shelter to decompress and really showcase his true personality. So he entered foster care and has been thriving since.
His foster’s tell us “He has the most beautiful dark brown almond shaped eyes which look at you sooo soulfully. He is a quick learner that can also entertain himself. He likes to play with his toys by throwing them in the air and tries to catch them in his mouth…sometimes he’s successful. He can be sweet and silly at times but very chill as well. When he wants attention, this 80lb puppy would like to crawl into your lap. He uses the head tilt to show you he’s listening and processing what you are saying. It’s so adorable to watch him do this. He is house and crate trained. He travels well in the car. He knows sit, down, how to give paw, and is great at recall. Overall, Pepper is a catch and anyone would be so lucky to have him!”

Meet our Sunbrella!
This bright and bouncy pup is just too much fun to be one of our longer stays on the floor right now! She came to us back at the end of May and she’s been an APS favorite from the start. She’s still under one year old (our guess is around nine months) and would love to get out of her kennel and on to adventuring with her new forever family. And as part of Clear the Shelters this month, we’ve just announced that we’re waiving Sunbrella adoption fee altogether! There’s no time to waste!
“Active! Yep, that’s ME! I’m a jumpy, excitable, playful, and smart girl who NEEDS to get to her forever home! I like treats, play, sniffing, and gentle affection! I have a hard time settling here at the shelter! I’ll need calming exercises, exercise, brain games, basic training, and opportunities to explore! Let’s GO!”

Meet our Bob Barker!
Bob came to us as a stray in the last week of a June and has been on the adoption floor for the last month. A favorite of all (like his namesake), this wiggly 2-year-old is endlessly sweet and a bundle of energy. And he’s as fun as he is fun-sized, at a “petite-for-a-pittie” 30lbs.
Here’s what he has to say for himself in his profile:
“Ready to play? I’m an active, playful, fun-loving guy. I’m friendly with people, but it takes me a little time to feel comfortable. Gentle folks and gentle affection are the best. I also enjoy a ball or stuffy. I’ll benefit from calming exercises, basic training, 4 on the floor, and positive experiences. I think learning is fun—want to take a class together? Come on down and see me!”

With Hurricane season upon us, there is no time like the present to ensure you and your family are prepared in the case of an emergency, especially our furry family members.
Here are a few tips to ensure your four legged friends can weather any storm safe and sound.
🏷️ Make sure your pets are wearing collars with up to date information on their identification tags.
If your pet is microchipped, ensure that the information on the chip is correct. If your pet is not microchipped, please consider getting your pet chipped once the storm passes.
📑 Gather important documents such as vaccines, medical records, and make sure your pets are up to date on their vaccinations.
🦴 Create an easy to grab kit of food, water and medications. Make sure you have enough to last two weeks.
🧸 Make sure you have leashes, crates, toys and a blanket to keep them comfortable and easy to transport.
🏥 Know where to go in the case of an emergency. Make a list of vets or boarding facilities that can board your pets. Another option is to identify hotels close by that are animal friendly if the need arises. Additionally find out from your local county or city what resources they provide for emergency sheltering and emergency response.
It’s never too late to be prepared. ❤️❤️

THIS GIVING TUESDAY!! APS’s mission is to build lifelong bonds between people and animals through education, community outreach and providing care for animals in need. Our community, made up of givers and kind hearts, makes that mission possible through their generosity and dedication. Our story about Grizz is just one example of the village it takes to make these lifelong bonds. After being hit by a car, Grizz needed an emergency amputation followed by heartworm treatment and care for pneumonia during his recovery. Throughout his journey with APS of Durham, Grizz was given the best of care so that he could find his forever home with Megan.Because of caring people like you, Grizz is part of Megan’s family bringing smiles so much joy to their lives. This is why APS does the hard work, why we work hard every day to save animals like Grizz. We build bonds that last a lifetime. Please help us connect more families through a donation this #GivingTuesday Click here to donate: https://fundraise.givesmart.com/form/lWWr-A?vid=12g1ej
