APS of Durham is an open admission shelter, and cares for more than 5,000 animals each year. The adoption package at APS is all-inclusive - your new pet will come home with a basic medical exam, spay/neuter (dogs, cats and rabbits), vaccines, a microchip (dogs and cats) and lots of love from our staff and volunteers. Adoptable Agnes is ready to take on the world — one tail wag at a time! She’s a young, active girl who loves toys, playtime, and people. But beneath that playful energy is a gentle soul who just wants to feel safe and loved 💛

In the shelter, Agnes curls up on her cot for comfort, but the moment she steps outside, her smile lights up the day. She walks beautifully on leash, knows “sit,” and would never say no to a hotdog reward 🌭.

She’s still gaining confidence and would do best with a patient adopter who can help her feel brave, provide structure, and shower her with cuddles once she’s ready.

Meet our pup, Wilhelmina! Wilhelmina enjoys a good walk (with lots of sniffing!) and playing fetch in open areas (this girl is fast!). She will make an excellent running and/or hiking buddy. Once playtime is done, Wilhelmina’s favorite activity is cuddling with her humans on the couch. This girl is one of the biggest cuddle bugs and will ask constantly for belly rubs. If you oblige, you’ll be rewarded with Wilhelmina’s biggest smile. She also enjoys playing with toys (the squeakier the better)!

Wilhelmina is curious about the space around her and will explore. She is also very intelligent and learns boundaries and commands quickly (with the help of encouragement and a treat or two)!
She is great with all dogs and humans she meets and would make a loving addition to a home looking for their forever dog.

Meet Lexy, a lovely senior lady with plenty of love left to give 🐾 ❤️

She may have a few miles on her paws, but she’s still ready for new adventures. An independent and gentle soul, Lexy’s feeling a bit anxious here at the shelter — she’s dreaming of a cozy home where she can relax and live out her golden years.

Lexy is super gentle when taking treats and loves leisurely leash walks filled with plenty of sniffs. She’d do best with a comfy bed, lots of enrichment, and some fun brain games to keep her mind sharp.

Meet our Pet of the Week Taz! He’s a fun-loving, sweet pup who our volunteers call “just perfect” and “such a nice boy”! Taz LOVES affection from people—he actually prefers it to treats! As Pet of the Week, his adoption fee is waived from today through next Tuesday, November 4. Remember our Fall in Love special too—adoption fees for all adoptable dogs and cats are only $25! But hurry, it’s over when we close on Friday, October 31.
“I’m super loving, curious, and playful! (They say I’m a bit of an older guy, but I bet you can’t tell.) I have all the smiles and wiggles for anybody who’s around me! I’m more into people than other dogs—with dogs, I’m curious and want to meet them, but after I give them a friendly sniff or two I’m usually on my way to the next human who has pets for me. They took me to an event last weekend where people were doing something called yoga. I didn’t really get it, but there were lots of people on the floor who I could nudge for affection and that made me very happy! I met some kids afterward and did great with them too. I’d love to find a family who will take me for walks (I might have a few pounds to lose, ahem) and let me explore with my nose! Come spend some time with me—I’m sure to win you over!”

It’s and we are celebrating Charlie (fka Cheetah) and her story!
Charlie’s new family visited with her twice at the shelter before bringing her home. Once she got home she quickly adjusted to new surroundings as if she had been there her whole life.
After a good nights sleep, she had her first (of many!) play time with her new fur brother Tomas, and then took a stroll around the neighborhood. She learned how to use her new dog bed and even ventured on to the human bed for some relaxation, ultimately finding her spot in the office where she can happily sleep and watch her family as they work. We are so happy for Charlie, Tomas and family!!! Give Charlie and family some love below! 👇🏻👇🏻

Meet Adoptable August! 🐾

Hiii! I’m a friendly, excited girl who loves to stay active. I enjoy learning and exploring the world, but my very favorite time is toy time! 🎾 I love to play with toys, and I’m a master shredder. In my new home, I’d love to go on lots of adventures outside with my people and have lots of things to rip up and shred (that’s called enrichment!). Let’s be pals!

More About Me:
👧 Kids: 10+ (I can get a little jumpy when excited!)
🐶 Dogs: I start out cautious, but once I warm up, I enjoy some playful chase games! I do best with slow intros and gentle friends.

It’s Foster Friday and we want to introduce you to Bandit. Bandit is the total package: equal parts couch companion and playtime partner. Currently in a foster home, Bandit enjoys the best of both worlds—napping like a pro and engaging in fun, friendly workouts with his 60-pound pointer mix foster sister. He enjoys playing with dogs and he leaves my cats alone. He’s completely housebroken, very food-motivated (bring on the treats!), and has a special fondness for lounging in a kiddie pool on hot days. This sweet guy loves to show affection—he’ll either crawl into your lap (yes, all 80 pounds of him!) or gently rest his paws across your legs, just to be close. Bandit is looking for:
 A loving home, soft places to nap, tasty meals, and humans who don’t mind a little (okay, a lot of) cuddling.
Bandit’s heart has known loss—his beloved owner passed away, and with no family nearby to care for him, he found himself in the shelter, where he struggled. Now thriving in a foster home, he’s ready for his second chance with someone who will treasure his big heart and mellow spirit.
