APS of Durham is an open admission shelter, and cares for more than 5,000 animals each year. The adoption package at APS is all-inclusive - your new pet will come home with a basic medical exam, spay/neuter (dogs, cats and rabbits), vaccines, a microchip (dogs and cats) and lots of love from our staff and volunteers. We can't wait to introduce you to our Pet of the Week, Anchovy! 💜🐶🐾He's a smiley goof with a squat stature and a penchant for stuffed toys and sunbathing. As Pet of the Week, his adoption fee is waived from today through next Tuesday, November 18!

More about Anchovy:
I'm a lovable, chill dude who'd like nothing better than to lie on the couch with my big old head in your lap and get belly rubs all day long! They call me "large," but honestly "chonky" might be a better description as I'm only a little more than knee-high. Personally, I think my short legs, thick body, enormous noggin, and asymmetrical ears only add to my charm! If not my adorable looks, what's sure to win you over is my personality — I'm an easygoing, affectionate, endearing guy who will be happy doing just about anything with you. I ride nicely in the car and get along well with people and other dogs, so I'm great to take out on the town — just be ready for me to flop down if I find a good spot to sunbathe. I can be protective of my food and toys, so please give me some space when I'm eating and offer me something in exchange if you need to take my toy away. For that reason, older children are recommended for me, and I'll need to be supervised with other dogs if there are toys or food around.

I've been at the shelter a little while now, and I just can't wait to have my own home and people! I'll be the most loyal, devoted boy. Come visit with me and fall in love!

Hi friends! We will be closed on Tuesday, November 11, to observe the Veterans Day holiday. To all our veterans, thank you for your service! 🫶

Can you feel that? That’s adoptable Molly’s adorable face tugging on your heartstrings!

She’s a super sweet girl who can be a bit sensitive and nervous in the big shelter environment. Once she warms up, she loves to play and enjoys gentle affection. She’s an active girl who likes to stay busy, snack on tasty treats, and have fun with her toys. Toss a ball, and she’ll happily pounce after it! She’ll thrive with confidence-building, gentle people, positive experiences, and plenty of playful fun.

Kids:Ages 8+, gentle children who can go at her pace, as she can be nervous

Dogs:Enjoys friendly sniffing, offers some play, and does well with a gentle play or sniffing partner

It’s Foster Friday and today we have Patch as our featured foster pup 🐾!

Although Patch's story with us started out as a sad one -- he got his name because he arrived at the shelter so skinny and malnourished that much of his fur had fallen out 😭 -- this lovely boy is now healthy, happy, and ready to find his forever home!

Patch is a super playful dude who loves people and gets along well with other dogs. He's been out on the town a bunch with his foster and enjoys himself whether he's on a walk, hanging out at a beer garden, or chilling with a chew toy. He's crate trained, too, and sleeps there through the night without a peep! He's the total package, and we KNOW his adopter is out there. Is it you??

It’s always a great day to meet some adoptable dogs, and the forecast for Saturday afternoon is beautiful ☀️

Meet our Pet of the Week, Nashville!🐾💙She's an eye-catching, attentive, medium-sized girl who loves to learn! As POTW, her adoption fee is waived through next Monday, November 10 (the shelter will be closed next Tuesday for Veterans' Day).

Here's what she has to say!
"I'm a charming, curious girl with an independent streak! I'm also very smart and treat-motivated, so I've been doing great with my training here at the shelter. Exploring is one of my favorite activities, so I'd be perfect for someone who'd like to take me for walks or hikes! I really benefit from having a good routine and enrichment that helps me keep my clever brain occupied. I can come on strong at first with other dogs and try to control them, but I've done well when the folks here have taken me to events with other dogs. Kids 6+ are OK with me too — they just need to recognize that I like to do my own thing. I'm the whole package! Come meet me today!"

Adoptable Agnes is ready to take on the world — one tail wag at a time! She’s a young, active girl who loves toys, playtime, and people. But beneath that playful energy is a gentle soul who just wants to feel safe and loved 💛

In the shelter, Agnes curls up on her cot for comfort, but the moment she steps outside, her smile lights up the day. She walks beautifully on leash, knows “sit,” and would never say no to a hotdog reward 🌭.

She’s still gaining confidence and would do best with a patient adopter who can help her feel brave, provide structure, and shower her with cuddles once she’s ready.

Meet our pup, Wilhelmina! Wilhelmina enjoys a good walk (with lots of sniffing!) and playing fetch in open areas (this girl is fast!). She will make an excellent running and/or hiking buddy. Once playtime is done, Wilhelmina’s favorite activity is cuddling with her humans on the couch. This girl is one of the biggest cuddle bugs and will ask constantly for belly rubs. If you oblige, you’ll be rewarded with Wilhelmina’s biggest smile. She also enjoys playing with toys (the squeakier the better)!

Wilhelmina is curious about the space around her and will explore. She is also very intelligent and learns boundaries and commands quickly (with the help of encouragement and a treat or two)!
She is great with all dogs and humans she meets and would make a loving addition to a home looking for their forever dog.
