APS of Durham is an open admission shelter, and cares for more than 5,000 animals each year. The adoption package at APS is all-inclusive - your new pet will come home with a basic medical exam, spay/neuter (dogs, cats and rabbits), vaccines, a microchip (dogs and cats) and lots of love from our staff and volunteers. Meet our Pet of the Week, Wiggle. Wiggle has been with us since September and is a volunteer favorite.
“More enthusiasm, more movement, more wiggles! I’m an excited, silly, sweet, and affectionate guy who likes to stay active! I also like butt scritches, gentle massage petting, treats, and lots of play! I’d benefit from calming exercises, basic training, enrichment, and lots of exercise and play time! Meet our Pet of the Week, Henderson! Henderson is one of the animals we rescued from Western North Carolina- which is why we named him after Hendersonville NC! This boy has been through quite a lot and is ready for his forever home. As a reminder APS is currently waiving all dog adoption fees!
“My name is Henderson, but my friends call me Survivor! I’ve been through a lot. I’m an active boy and a good learner; I already know sit, paw, and other paw. I can be anxious or jumpy and stressed—a hurricane will do that to you—but I’m also excited just to be here. I like treats, exploring, exercise, and working on my vertical. I’ll need calming exercises, lots of activity and enrichment, and an experienced/dog-savvy owner (or someone willing to learn in a hurry). Come see me today—let’s tell some stories!”

It’s and today’s feature, Gus, has the BEST smile in town! (Make sure to swipe for proof 😂) Gus has been having a blast with his foster family and here’s what they have to say about him 👇

“Gus is a sweety with a big head and a big heart to match. He loves everyone he meets and is always ready for pets and kisses. Gus was found as a stray but seems to have come from a loving family.

Gus is fully house trained. We haven’t attempted to crate him but do have him sleep in a small gated area and although he’ll let out a cry or two before settling down, he rarely ever barks. He does well with other dogs of all sizes, especially ones that are on the calmer side. He has met our cats through a gate and was curious but calm with his tail doing a happy wag.

If you’re looking for a best pal who loves goofy zooms (you’ll just have to see it for yourself) and cuddles, then Gus is the guy for you!”

Don’t forget that all of our dogs have no adoption fee for the month of October, so act fast!

Meet our Pet of the Week, Presley! Presley spent some time in a foster home recently and here is what they had to say….”He is calm/sweet natured, with a big heart and lots of love to give. Been observed to be good/gentle with all ages, including young children, and friendly with other dogs. Walks easily on a leash, likes to be outdoors, but is happy to rest at your feet too. Sleeps quietly through the night on a dog pillow. He will make a great addition to any family, but especially for an older adult looking for a nice companion to spend their days with. He likes dry, crunchy food, peanut butter and cottage cheese. Not a chewer, as he is missing a few of his front teeth.”

Tomorrow is the last day of #ClearTheShelters! Here’s What to Expect: 🐶 A select amount of animals have their adoption fees waived. Remember: our fees include a medical exam, spay/neuter, vaccines, behavior assessments, microchip, lots of love and more! 🐱Please ensure you have no COVID-19 symptoms, have not been exposed to anyone with COVID-19, wear your mask (regardless of vaccination status), and practice social distancing and hand sanitizing inside the shelter.🐭APS will have extended hours on Saturday, opening at 10AM – 3PM for adoptions. Adoption visits will end at 2:30PM.🐹There may be lines and weather is unpredictable, so please come prepared. We suggest you bring plenty of water and a portable chair. We may not be able to accommodate everyone inside the shelter depending on demand.🐰We will be updating everyone throughout the day on how many pets are still available for adoption. Numbers will be posted outside the shelter and on social media.🐱A valid ID will be required for adoptions. Adopters must be 18.🐭If you are interested in adopting a specific animal but wish to meet with other animals before making a final decision, please understand that we cannot place a hold on any of the animals while you are making your decision. We adopt out on a first come first served basis.🐶No outside animals are allowed at APS during this event. 🐱Cat and Small Animal Adoptions: if you have a cat carrier or other mode of transport (or could borrow one), please bring it with you. We have carriers available for a small fee.🐶Dog Adoptions: please bring a leash and collar with you, but we also have a limited selection available for purchase. 🐭We welcome you to have a photo taken of your family with your new pet by one of our photographers!
