APS of Durham is an open admission shelter, and cares for more than 5,000 animals each year. The adoption package at APS is all-inclusive - your new pet will come home with a basic medical exam, spay/neuter (dogs, cats and rabbits), vaccines, a microchip (dogs and cats) and lots of love from our staff and volunteers. Mark your calendars now for our biggest, swankiest fundraiser of the year!
Please join us on Saturday, November 22, at 6:00pm at the Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club for the 2025 Tails at Twilight! The evening will feature a cocktail hour and dinner, a silent auction with some of the most unique items and experiences you’ll find anywhere, and the rollicking fun of our live auction! There will be games. There will be dogs. There will be wine!
Most important, with your support, APS can offer the animals that come through our doors comfort, joy and a fresh start. Your generosity gives them a chance to feel safe and loved so they can show their silly, carefree sides that may have been hidden away. Because every animal deserves a life where they can play, trust, and THRIVE!

Twinkle Toes is ready for kickoff 🏈💫

Come see us as we “kick off” our annual Movers for Mutts donation event this Saturday 9/20! APS and our partners, Two Men and a Truck Durham, will be along Blue Devil Walk before the game with lots of free swag, t-shirts for a $25 donation, and the opportunity to enter our raffle to win a pair of tickets to the Duke-Carolina basketball game in Cameron for the upcoming season! A raffle ticket can be yours for a $50 donation, and there are only 400 to be had. (Not bad odds!)

Look for our Movers for Mutts donation boxes at local Durham businesses from now through November, too! Your donations of things like dog and cat food and treats, stuffed dog toys, peanut butter, and more help us keep our animals engaged and at their best.

Pro tip: If you’ve just gotten the handoff, don’t try to take on Twinkle Toes. He’ll outrun you every time, and he’s a fantastic blocker and tackler!

Meet our Pet of the Week, Tourmaline! This shy but spunky little girl, rarely seen without a stuffy in tow (really, check out her pictures!), is ready to meet her new family. As Pet of the Week, her adoption fee is waived from today, 9/17, through next Tuesday, 9/23.

“I’m a super sweet, playful, endearing little girl who will carry a toy around all day long if you’ll let me! OK, maybe they’re for emotional support, too — I like people and other dogs, and I try SO hard to play it cool, but sometimes I still need to have a little pancake. My favorite friends are ones who understand and go at my pace. Besides toys, I love to get gentle affection and eat tasty treats! Kids are A-OK with me as long as they’re gentle, and same thing with other dogs. I’ll benefit from having lots of positive, confidence-building experiences with my new family. Come scoop me up today!”

Grab your tickets now and join us for a Movers for Mutts event benefiting APS! On Saturday, October 4, from 2-4pm, come paint and sip at as you create an original pop art piece celebrating your pet! Register for the event, then submit a photo of your pet. It will be traced onto a canvas that'll be waiting when you arrive!

Not sure of your painting skills? No problem! A professional pet portrait artist will be there to guide you. But hurry--this event is popular, and there are only 30 seats available! A portion of the ticket price will be donated to APS. Come for an afternoon of fun and leave with a memento to cherish your pet forever 💜🐾

Happy Monday! We've got a couple of great events coming up this week, so come out and see us!

On Tuesday, we're welcoming canine expert Paula Heubusch to our educational series, Community Tails. This month's talk is "Tips & Tricks to Engage Your Dog's Brain." Your dog will be healthier and happier with regular engagement and enrichment, so come and learn some accessible exercises to practice with your pup! On Saturday, we "kick off" our annual Movers for Mutts donation campaign with a tailgate at the Duke vs. NC State football game! Don’t miss the latest in our community education series, Community Tails! This Tuesday at 6:30pm!
Did you know that behavioral issues in dogs can arise if they’re not mentally stimulated enough? On Tuesday, September 16, we’re thrilled to welcome canine expert Paula Heubusch to our recurring Community Tails educational series! This month’s topic is “Tips & Tricks to Engage Your Dog’s Brain.” Come learn these accessible techniques to help your dog put their best paw forward!
Many thanks to Pour Taproom in downtown Durham for hosting Community Tails. If you haven’t been, they have a unique way you can sample lots of different drinks on tap! No-hassle parking is available in the connected deck.

It’s Foster Friday and we got the incredibly sweet Asami!!! She is an easy going, ham for the cam (📸) with a lot of loves in life:
🧜‍♀️ She really really loves to swim. She’s a real merdog!

🧭 She loves to be outside exploring. If she gets hot she simply takes a dip in her little blue pool.

🐾 She loves her crate and does not have separation anxiety.

🧸 She loves her big lamb chop stuffy and likes to take it into her crate to make it even more cozy.

💤 She loves to sleep in in the morning when possible.

📢 She loves to come when called even if she is off exploring in the woods.

🦴 She loves treats and will happily learn with just a little food involved.

Meet Laverne! This excitable, enthusiastic, and oh-so-friendly girl is known for jumping up to say “Hiiiiii!” 👋 She LOVES chasing toys, gobbling up treats, and exploring everything the world has to offer.

Laverne’s looking for an active home where she can keep learning and growing — think brain games, loose leash walks, and plenty of playtime. She’ll do best with kids 10+ (she’s a bit jumpy and mouthy!) and is a little shy with new dog friends, but warms up to play once she feels safe.
