APS of Durham is an open admission shelter, and cares for more than 5,000 animals each year. The adoption package at APS is all-inclusive - your new pet will come home with a basic medical exam, spay/neuter (dogs, cats and rabbits), vaccines, a microchip (dogs and cats) and lots of love from our staff and volunteers. If you contact us via Facebook Messages, please follow up with a phone call if yo

Hi, I’m Chex! What even am I??? I’m a sweet, wiggly, appeasing, and curious gal!

I have a heart of gold and I try super hard to be brave! I like treats, toys, and a bouncing ball in particular! I’ll need basic training, a slow feeder, confidence building and positive experiences! I’ll need some help warming up to new people, can you help me?!

This week, we will be closed to the public Dec 24th, 25th and 26th in observance of the Holidays!

Meet Eli, the cutest little furball ready to paws-itively light up your holiday season! 🎄🐾 He is all dressed up in his holiday best and is hoping to find a cozy spot to curl up in — maybe your home? Stop by today from 10-2 to meet this handsome tabby!

Eli is FeLV positive. Even though he has tested positive for the Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV), he is capable of living a full, healthy life. This virus can suppress his immune system, potentially making him more susceptible to other infections. While there is no cure for FeLV, with regular veterinary care cats can go on to live a relatively healthy and long lifestyle. The disease can be transmissible to other cats, but not to people or other species. Ideally, FeLV-positive cats should either live with other cats that have tested positive for FeLV to reduce the risk of spreading the disease or in a single cat household. Thank you for considering opening your heart and home to such a sweet and wonderful as Eli ❤️

All that sugar in those slushies has given me ENERGY! Hahaha! I’m an energetic, friendly, sweet and fun girl who loves to learn and is food motivated! I like gentle affection, being with people, toys and play! I’ll need regular exercise, basic manners training, calming exercises, and brain teasing enrichment! I’m a smart girl and I’m ready to learn!

Kids: Any age dog-savvy kids; very active, can be jumpy

Dogs: Nervous zoomies, some sniffing. Slow and careful intros with gentle dogs of similar size

🚗 he absolutely loves the car and hops right in.
😃 he is such a happy pup.

What a ball! Our 2024 Tails at Twilight Gala was an amazing success🎉 Thank you to everyone that attended, donated, bid, raffled and danced! It was a fun-filled night buzzing with all the love and excitement our incredible community has for animal welfare.

Your unwavering commitment to the health and well-being of our animals made it possible for us to raise an incredible $270,033! Every ounce of that amazing support will go toward furthering the APS vision that there are no displaced or unwanted pets, that all animals and people are treated with compassion and respect, and that community services are available to all. There’s no place like home for a lost pet, especially the home that’s missing them! Without identification many pets don’t find their way home. We aim to change that. Complete our Love ’em? Tag ’em! survey and get free ID tags for your pets for that extra peace of mind.

This campaign offers all Durham pet owners identification tags for their animals at no charge. Owners simply fill out the survey linked on our website below and their new tags will arrive in the mail, it’s just that easy!
