Fridays should be for fun, so you guessed it (see what we did there?), it's time for a guess that breed game! Hint: These happy little guys are a variety of terrier with Affenpinscher and Poodle blood in them 🤔

🏳️⚧️ A day late, but every day is one to be an ally and support the community! Transgender Day of Remembrence is an observance mourning those we've lost and the work that still needs to be done to protect trans lives, but Rachel Crandall-Crocker decided in 2009 that we need a day to celebrate those lives, too. Check out awesome organizations like The Trevor Project for more information on how you can join the celebration & make a difference doing it!

🐶🔊 BOOF! Believe it or not, Leaf here is just super excited to see her favorite toy while she’s working with trainer Cal! We’ve talked about how barking is very situational and not always a bad thing. Big boofs = big excitement in this case, but you can gauge your dog’s feelings about something with more minor expressions leading up, too. Here are a few examples:
🐶If your dog has big feelings about another dog or person, you may notice other expressions like raised hackles, hard staring, or whining before you get the big bark.
🐶If your dog is excited about their favorite toy or going on a walk, you may see expressions like happy paw dancing, panting, or whining before the barking starts.
A good rule of thumb is the bigger the expression, the bigger the feelings. You can usually catch an escalation like a big bark before it happens by listening to your pup’s more subtle signals. We know it’s not so simple to understand those signals, so text us at (984) 355-0841 or email [email protected] for help bridging the communication gap to create a more peaceful home life!

A few throwbacks with a few of my non-human best friends for you this Thursday! Introduce your best FURiends in the comments, but for those who haven’t had the pleasure of meeting mine:
❤️ Gambit - German Shepherd, OG Pin Up Pup Training mascot, the heart dog I’ll never forget even from across the rainbow bridge. Not nearly as talented with cards as his X-Men namesake.
🕸️ Peter Parker - Your friendly neighborhood Pembroke Welsh Corgi, because only Corgis could break the hold GSDs have on me (those fluffy butts though!). Mud bath enthusiast whose treat senses are always tingling. He does “sit pretty” for me in between zoomies when I get home in anticipation of a morsel.
🤖 Jarvis - Not in fact Iron Man’s AI assistant, but you guessed it, a German Shepherd! He loves a good chest scritch - eyes rolled back, tongue lolling out, the whole nine - when he’s not pulling me into the river on his favorite sniffle walks.

We talked about some handling basics for kids earlier this week, so we figured we’d touch on more general guidelines everyone can use to learn their dog’s preferences through consent testing! It’s exactly what it sounds like - you can gradually try the steps here and note your pup’s reactions to figure out how and when they’d like to be petted! For the petting durations, try different sections of the body in small increments as they feel comfortable, and you’ll want to cut the sessions short if you notice your dog stiffening or growling. Let us know how this works for you in the comments!

Nature and instinct aren’t EVERYTHING, but we should consider our pup’s instinctual needs and incorporate them into play as a healthy outlet! You can reduce stuff like predatory drift (the shift from play to predatory behavior when a dog reacts to a playmate as prey) by satisfying those needs in the healthy ways we touch on here. Comment your 🐶’s favorite of these activities below!

Is Your Dog Reactive? Counterconditioning & Desensitization
Maya and Bodhi are awesome! Check out how trainer Katherine does some counterconditioning and desensitization with our client's driveway buzzer - the key is keeping sessions short, and stopping if you notice your pup is becoming stressed!🔑

We talked about leash pulling recently - our client is a shining example of how to avoid getting there in the first place🌟! See how her pup is right next to her? Treating and providing other rewards while your dog is close during walks is the best way to teach them that better stuff happens by your side than out in the big wide world ahead! This is also a great jumping off point for a 'look" or 'watch me' cue—text (760) 277-5659 or email [email protected] to learn more!

Check out that happy tail this #waggingwednesday 🐕! Did you know growling during play actually shows your pups are having a blast? When accompanied by stressed body language like flat ears or raised hackles, you'll want to interpret a growl as a warning. During play, as long as body language is loose with wagging tails and play bows, a growl like what Max vocalized here is happy communication with his play partner. Have you noticed your dog growl while playing before?

Have you ever seen your dog do what Juno (dog with the squeaker toy) does here during play? Here's what that means...
💡#factoftheday: This is called a play bow! Since dogs communicate primarily through body language, they'll bow like this during play to signal/invite another dog to join!

Tada! And just like that (with much hard work on the parts of our trainer Katherine and pup Juno 🐶) we're not only doing wonderfully with mat training, but we're also getting comfortable with cats 😺! It can be a challenge to acclimate pets you already have when welcoming a new one. Text us at (760) 277-5659 or email [email protected] for a plan tailored to your specific needs, but here are some helpful pointers:
👀When introducing a new pet, first start with supervised visits that are short in length. This helps avoid your current pet getting overwhelmed and allows you to see how they interact with each other in a safe space.
🍴Keep food bowls and mealtimes separate. This is very helpful in managing fights that can break out due to resource guarding.

We're so proud of Juno! Trainer Katherine is working on mat training with this sweet pup, and aside from the wonderful bond our fun training process creates, there are some great benefits of getting your pup comfortable with the mat:
🐾Going to mat is a great way to redirect problem behaviors—for example, if your pup gets really excited and jumps on visitors when they come through the door, we can train them to go to mat when visitors approach instead
🐾The mat creates a safe space for your pup—have you ever gotten overwhelmed and just needed a quiet place to collect your thoughts (like your room, for example)? A similar concept applies here, where with training, your pup can learn to self-regulate and take themselves to the mat whenever they're feeling over-excited
