Whole Dog Institute is a local dog training business serving clients in the Durham-Chapel Hill-Hillsborough area. We help our students understand how to communicate more effectively with their dogs and how to solve basic behavioral challenges, as well as teaching dogs what we want from them. We offer private lessons and group classes in obedience (puppy, teen and adult dog classes), Therapy Dog prep, Reactive Dog classes (for leash reactivity), K9 Nose Work®, and agility for fun.

Is your dog looking for new ways to earn more cookies? Join us for our loose leash walking class that starts on Thursday or our Rally Novice class that starts next week. We will also be adding our Outdoor Games and Intro to Nose work in the next week or so. Reach out if you want to be included on the waitlist. We have had a couple spots open up for new dogs starting K9 Nose Work. It starts next Sunday morning. This is a great game for building confidence and is a fun activity for any dog. This class starts by teaching the dogs to hunt independently and teaches the handler to have a good eye at reading what the dog is trying to tell you. We start all our dogs on food and teach them all the problem solving skills they will see in their nose work career.

We have added a new puppy class: This drop-in class will prepare your puppy to enter the Puppy Relationship Building class. It is a one-hour class for puppies nine weeks to five months old. We focus on building confidence and enthusiasm for working with the human partner. With positive exposure to novel stimuli, puppies grow in confidence and their ability to handle new situations with ease.

Specific puppy problem behaviors may be identified and in those cases, private behavioral sessions are often recommended.

Come play with your puppy - expose them to a variety of humans, puppies, and objects that will stimulate their senses and engage their minds in a productive manner.

Basic outline for each class:

Quick introductions
Puppy exposure to novel environmental stimuli
Quiet time with mini lecturette from instructor
Playtime with pups and humans
If time is available, one skill may be taught

This is a great time of year for agility. We have our outdoor games class that starts in about a week and is the foundation of all our agility classes. We also have a foundation for dog sports which will help you get off on the right foot for all the sports. Also, we also have a few openings in our puppy and teen dog classes. So last weekend 2 of our amazing teams got Summit titles in the same trial. So 50 percent of the titles were WDI students. It is a testament to all of their hard work and dedication to get the highest title in NACSW. So very proud of both of these teams and all of our other outstanding teams in the Whole Dog family!!

We have a new agility class starting on 12/5 focusing on Discrimination and verbal cues. In both UKI and AKC ISC-style courses, we are seeing multiple obstacle choices presented along the dog's path where the handler can't be right there to help the dog. This requires not only more independent verbal cues, but an understanding of where and how to set the dog's path to create the best line. This class will develop your tool kit to handle these situations. Open to all teams who use verbal obstacle cues. All obstacles will be used, but contacts can be avoided if needed.

Is your dog feeling the winter blues? We probably have a class for you!

Do you have a new puppy or are you getting one soon? We have a few spots available in our Puppy Relationship Building or our puppy play and train classes. We also offer individualized puppy consults to help you get off on the right foot.

Have you adopted or rescued a new adult dog? We have just added some additional Relationship Building Fundamentals Classes.

Does your dog or puppy need a job? We have some rare spots in our K9 nose work classes.

Is your dog having some adolescent moments? The teen dog class may be perfect to work through those struggles.

We have also added a few new agility classes and a new instructor: Kathy Wood. She will be teaching a jumping skills class which is a great class for those working on foundations or those who need to brush up on existing jumping skills. It will include jumps and tunnels.

Calling all scent detection nerds - registration for Lucy Newton's online scent theory class opens today! Class starts February 1st. This class is not specifically a dog training class although you will utilize your tracking dog and/or detection dog for the exercises (since the dog is the expert).
