Whole Dog Institute is a local dog training business serving clients in the Durham-Chapel Hill-Hillsborough area. We help our students understand how to communicate more effectively with their dogs and how to solve basic behavioral challenges, as well as teaching dogs what we want from them. We offer private lessons and group classes in obedience (puppy, teen and adult dog classes), Therapy Dog prep, Reactive Dog classes (for leash reactivity), K9 Nose Work®, and agility for fun.

Is your dog feeling the winter blues? We probably have a class for you!

Do you have a new puppy or are you getting one soon? We have a few spots available in our Puppy Relationship Building or our puppy play and train classes. We also offer individualized puppy consults to help you get off on the right foot.

Have you adopted or rescued a new adult dog? We have just added some additional Relationship Building Fundamentals Classes.

Does your dog or puppy need a job? We have some rare spots in our K9 nose work classes.

Is your dog having some adolescent moments? The teen dog class may be perfect to work through those struggles.

We have also added a few new agility classes and a new instructor: Kathy Wood. She will be teaching a jumping skills class which is a great class for those working on foundations or those who need to brush up on existing jumping skills. It will include jumps and tunnels.

Calling all scent detection nerds - registration for Lucy Newton's online scent theory class opens today! Class starts February 1st. This class is not specifically a dog training class although you will utilize your tracking dog and/or detection dog for the exercises (since the dog is the expert). It is never too soon to start training your puppy. We have some upcoming Puppy Relationship Building Fundamentals classes that will start you off on the right foot with your new addition. We also have a Relationship Building Fundamentals for your new adult dog to join in on the fun. Building a relationship with your puppy or new adult dog is the key to having a happy household.

We have a few drop in classes listed on our website: exteriors for NW2 and above and containers for all levels. Our sign up for our next session is also listed. We have a rare couple of spaces in our intro class.

You do not have to be a current student to participate in the drop in classes but you do have to be competing at that level.

Ashley Allison will be teaching agility at Whole Dog Institute in Durham on Monday nights starting in September. She is teaching Master/international skills and drills, young dog and US Open prep classes.

Ashley has been in the agility competition ring for 18 years with multiple dogs across 6 organizations. She is a medalist in multiple UKI Classic events and the 2019 UKI National Championship with her Border Collie, Currie (The Spotted Wonder). She has been a UKI National Finalist 11 times with two different dogs and has finished in the top 5, five times. She has earned several top 10 placements with three different dogs at the UKI US Open championships. Ashley's border collie Currie has completed 6 Championship titles across two organizations (USDAA and UKI). More recently (2021-2023) Currie and Strider have won individual AKC ISC classes and overall top placements in cup events. In 2023, her 5 year old shetland sheepdog Strider finished 2nd overall at the Mountain Madness UKI festival and finished the International Agility Champion (IAC) and International Win Agility Champion (IWAC) titles.

We have some rare open spots in our abbreviated 4 week sessions of Agility and sport puppy taught by Casey Keller. Casey has qualified for multiple national and international events with her dogs. She works with each team individually and can help you break down a course and teach you the best way to help you and your dog. Classes start next week. We hope you will join us!

We also have some other classes coming up: Therapy Dog, Loose Leash Walking, Puppy Relationship Building and Relationship Building Fundamentals. Pretty much something for everyone!!

Huge Congrats to another of our Nose work Instructors. Jessica and Banks got their elite championship. They are a rockstar team and Jessica is an amazing instructor. Open to any level team who wants to proof their fancy skills or teach them for the first time! We will focus on common opening sequences so you can start your runs with confidence! $110 per spot, Limited to 6 teams.

2:15-4:15–Puppies!!!
Open to puppies under a year old. We will play age appropriate foundation games, and give the puppies a chance to work in a group environment. $60 per spot, limited to 6 teams.

We have quite a few openings in classes this session. I was going to offer a NW2/NW3 class on Tuesdays at 7:45 if I have 6 people that are interested. We also have openings in our Nosework for Fun and most of our Odor Competition classes. Almost all of our instructors are either CNWI's or are in the CNWI program and Sue and I have trained them all. Out on the Town Class

The Out on the Town Class showed off their awesome matwork skills, loose leash walking, stays, and recalls around some pretty crazy distractions today - including a playground full of yelling and playing children and a roller hockey game!

Pittstown NJ NW3 Vehicle search

The infamous off-leash vehicle search in Pittstown, NJ. Louie was one of two dogs to pass this search area. We had 1 min 30 seconds to search two golf carts with an off-leash option. We were the only pair to go off leash. Louie took 1st place in this NW3 (overall) due to this search. The CO was surprised as she had thought this would be a fairly simple search.
