Andy and Caulder have both Pembrokes and Cardigans! Love both breeds but the Cardigans sure are easier to live with! And wonderful Clowns

Factoid: Two Corgis – Two Breeds

Though they share the word, “Corgi” in their names, the Cardigan Welsh Corgi and the Pembroke Welsh Corgi are two distinct breeds with different origins: The Cardigan originated with the Teckel family of dogs, while the Pembroke originated with the Spitz and Finnish families.

There was a time in England, however, when for a very brief time, the Cardigan Welsh Corgis and Pembroke Welsh Corgis were interbred because they were considered one breed divided into two types. The Kennel Club (England’s version of the AKC) even had them listed in its studbook as a single breed which allowed the two types to be crossed. This error was amended in 1934 when after years of vigorous complaints by the frustrated breeders of each, the Kennel Club finally listed them as the two very distinct breeds they are. The catalyst for this move may have been formed years earlier when the English Cardigan Welsh Corgi Association was organized in 1926. After nine years of protests and lobbying by breeders, fanciers, and the club itself, the Kennel Club separated the two breeds in 1934 as they should have been from the beginning. This undoubtedly helped influence the AKC to also admit the two as separate breeds.

It’s difficult to imagine that the two were ever thought of as anything other than two very distinct breeds they are. The Cardigan has a longer body, slightly heavier bones, larger and rounder ears at the tips, rounder feet that tend to point outwards, and of course, a tail. The Pembroke’s ears are erect, firm, and taper slightly to a rounded point, and his more oval shaped feet generally point straight forward. Differences extend to temperaments, as well. When inquiring about the distinctions between the two breed personalities, we were once told that a Cardigan Welsh Corgi could be seen as the friendly but reserved butler greeting party guests at the door, while the Pembroke would be swinging on a chandelier reciting b***y limericks to the other party goers.

For anyone who struggles to tell the two apart, here’s a nemonic device: A cardigan sweater has long sleeves. Remember that the Cardigan Welsh Corgi has a long tail.

UPDATE! Road is open and we have power!! Thank you, Green Mountain Power!
To avoid the parade we will be dropping dogs off at 5:00 instead of 4:00 this afternoon.
Thanks to all our clients for being so flexible and understanding. :)

Well, here we are, stranded again! There are multiple trees down with power lines on the ground. At this point, we are cancelling daycare for today, Saturday, 8/10. For dogs going home this afternoon, we are keeping fingers crossed but even if we are able to get out, there will be a car parade in Waterbury at 3:30 so we will all have to plan on a little extra time to get through.

Caulder grew up showing our Siberians from a very young age and went on to eventually become a professional handler showing many different breeds. Juniors in dogs has always been close to my heart. So when AKC started their P*e Wee Class program for kids 5-9 yrs, I jumped at the chance to have our Green Mountain Dog Club offer it at our shows!! I just love the kids! And this photo from this year shows you just what it is all about!! This is one of my P*e Wees! Made it to a national publication!

Spotlight - Jace Aaron Houlihan

We want to see our readers photos to be shared on The !

Thank you to one of our readers for sharing this absolutely adorable photo of Jace participating in his first P*e Wee class at the Vermont Scenic Cluster. Jace not only loved showing his dog but he stood on the sidelines and cheered for all of the other kids and gave them high fives on the way out of the ring!

Do your children train the puppies? Do they love to groom the dogs and get them show ready? Do they help whelp litters? Do they help take candid photos? Do your kids just love spending time with the dogs? Please share photos of your Next Generation (2 legged and 4 legged) with us! We want to see them! Email Gia at [email protected] with your photos!

Never thought I would be posting something like this!
A dog that was suppose boarding with us July and August sadly was just killed in a Beaver Trap! As horrifying as this is to us, sadly it also means we do have a run now available for some days in July and August if anyone still needs a spot.
Also it hits home how much the laws need to be changed regarding trapping in Vermont. Talk to your legislators!!

Blackfly season is upon us! :( Looks horrid on our poor pups but fly bites are a lot better than some other causes of rashes!

Black Fly season is among us! If you notice marks like this on your canine family member don't be alarmed. They usually will show up on the abdomen/inner thighs. Thankfully, black fly bites aren't usually a serious medical concern & typically heal without treatment.
