We don't take iris samples often, but this fast growing mass in a cat's iris needed a confirmed answer. The eye was topically anesthetized. A fine needle aspirate was obtained from this iris mass using a 27 gauge needle and entering from the limbus. Cytology showed numerous small and large lymphocytes. PARR analysis confirmed the diagnosis of B or plasma cell lymphoma. The patient is now receiving chemotherapy with an oncologist. The iris growth has resolved!

Careful with lasers or you'll shoot your eye out! Here is a video of our new A.R.C. FOX Diode Laser in action for treatment of a pigmented iris lesion in a dog. This procedure was sped up 20x for demonstration purposes and took a total of 4 minutes to perform in real time. The laser procedure was performed under a brief general anesthesia to allow for visualization and is a non-contact method for treatment of intraocular iris pigmentation changes or some intraocular cysts. Diode lasers have a wavelength of 810 nm which makes them ideal for this treatment compared to other types of laser. Some patients require repeat procedures if pigment changes progress following the procedure.

Uveal cysts: should you worry? These fluid-filled pigmented cysts are often asymptomatic; however, some are associated with inflammation and vision impairment. Uveal cysts are also often misdiagnosed as cancerous growths. For this reason, we recommend having a veterinary eye professional evaluate your pet if a cyst or pigmented iris mass is diagnosed. Another weekend, another dog eye clinic performed in a bathroom to allow for complete darkness! Did you know the lenses used to look at your pet's retina cause the image to be flipped and reversed? This means your veterinary ophthalmologist sees the retina upside down and backwards from normal.

It's Ground Hog Day! The ground hog’s lower retina is much thicker and cone dense area than the upper half. Their optic nerve is also linear and horizontally located which allows the ground hog to scan the sky for predators. It is unclear if this difference in retinal anatomy also gives them the ability to determine weather patterns. Whether you’re cheering for a shorter or longer winter – Happy Ground Hog Day!

How does cold weather affect your pet's eyes? Without protective measures, cold weather can dry out our eyes, and even cause vision problems. Just as you know that your fingers should be protected from the cold, you should also know how to protect your eyes from the icy elements.

Common cold weather eye problems include:
1. Dry Eyes
2. Excessive Tearing
2. Corneal Freeze (less common)

Using an indoor humidifier, applying artificial tears, and keeping periods of time outside minimized can help reduce the risk of these cold weather complications. If your pet is experiencing eye problems then make sure to visit your vet or a veterinary ophthalmologist as soon as possible.
