Training Tip Tuesday!

Tip: The fastest way to meet your goals is to lower your expectations (at least for now).

As humans, we often start trying to train our dog from where we *think* they should be, and that often isn't where the dog actually is.

If your goal is to go for a neighborhood walk with your dog in the "heel" position for the entire walk, maybe you could change your goal to something more like walking without doing... I don't know, whatever ~this~ is...

That just might be a goal you can attain!

If you are new to this idea, we can help! There is still time to sign up for Leash Liberation: A Long Line Master Class (today at 6:30 pm) - https://paws4u.dogbizpro.com/public/registration/index.aspx?schedule=6341

Flashback Friday! A dog who pulls their owner all over the place, tripping them and choking himself, is no fun to walk. Many people expect their dogs to naturally understand that he’s supposed to walk by their side, but this is not a natural behavior for dogs.

New Online Class Alert:

"Because I Said So": Solutions for the Stubborn Dog

Does your dog lie down on walks when you turn around to go home? Maybe you've got a dog who makes eye contact with you when you call them in from the backyard before going back to what they were doing. Perhaps you have a pup who trots away, tail waving jauntily, when you asked them to go in their kennel. Whatever your pup is resisting, you've likely already discovered that force isn't the answer. But what do you do when you just need your dog to listen?

This class will cover solutions and troubleshooting for those dogs who wag to the beat of their own drummer and don't really care what you think. We'll help you figure out the whys of your dog's behavior, as well as strategies to win them over to your way of thinking.

Training Tip Tuesday!

Create and maintain strong boundaries.

Ugh. What are boundaries, anyway?

Boundaries are not about changing or controlling the other person's behavior. Boundaries are about accepting the other person as a completely separate person; one that is responsible for their own behavior. Boundaries are understanding and accepting that people are allowed to act however they want to act, and sometimes they will do things that hurt you. The boundaries give you a guide for how you respond and protect yourself when those behaviors happen.

Lots of people think boundaries are like this - "You can't treat my dog that way." "You can't do X to my dog." "You can't give that food to my dog."

But these - however reasonable and appropriate they may be - are not boundaries. These are requests (perhaps they're even demands) that the other person change their behavior to fit into your idea of what they should behave like.

Boundaries are actually like:

"When someone treats my dog in a way that makes me uncomfortable, I will remove my dog from the situation by putting them in the kennel, leaving the room, or leaving the house."

" I will ask people not to feed my dog X food, and if I see someone try to do it anyway, I will tether my dog to my body so that I can monitor more easily."

"If I find myself unable to trust someone to be appropriate around my dog, I simply will not allow them to interact."
