You can run, but you can’t hide.

Early Sunday around 1:30 am, two Dakota County Sheriff's Office park rangers were in separate vehicles driving on Highway 52 in Inver Grove Heights. Two vehicles approached them from behind at a high rate of speed and appeared to be racing. One of the vehicles lost control and struck our park ranger sending him into the guard rail. The two drivers did not stop after the crash. The park ranger sustained a head injury from the impact and is recovering. We are very fortunate it wasn’t worse. The vehicle is totaled.

Days later, our skilled and relentless investigators were able to identify one of the drivers and vehicles involved. That led to the identification of the second driver and vehicle. They now face potential felony criminal vehicle operation charges.

Whether it’s fleeing a traffic stop or avoiding arrest, we always find you.

Minnesota is hurting. Our law enforcement community is broken. In a week there have been 2 police Officer su***des in Minnesota. To find the worlds to write this have been hard. What I do know, is that there needs to be change. Where do we start? Continuing to tell everyone to reach out for help is a start. The National su***de crisis line is 1-800-273-8255. There is also Safe Call Now. A 24 hour a day crisis line for a public safety employees to speak in confidentiality with officers, former law enforcement officers, public safety professionals, and/or mental health care providers who are familiar with your line of work.

I CANNOT stress to you the importance of checking in on one another. Chances are, those who hurt will do it behind closed doors. They won’t reach out. Be proactive. A phone call, text, meet up for coffee or a burger... these are all things that play an important role in getting the conversation started. Break this stigma! It is ok to not be ok!!! We all struggle. Good days and bad days. Departments have implemented training, but it needs to go beyond that as well. Make us safe. Make it ok for them to reach out and ask for help. Just because an officer is struggling, doesn’t mean they are incapable of doing their job. Part of the job of the upper command staff is to take care of their officers. So take care of them instead of tossing them to the side. Show them their value and get them the help they need. Be their back up. We all need to stand together to check our partners. As a new day rises; the pain, anxiety, anger, and confusion lives on in the wake of our Burnsville Police Department and Burnsville Professional Firefighters.

We want a united voice. A loud voice of power, hope, and stability for the families and friends of the fallen. This is a voice that outweighs any of the hate and political rhetoric from elected officials who now want to support our first responders.

This voice is stronger. It’s more powerful. It’s one that won’t go away because we love, cherish, and support our law enforcement, fire departments, 911 dispatchers, and mental health professionals helping those from the aftermath.

There will come a time when we approach the threshold of those who allow senseless violence be a norm. There will come a time when we shout and let our politicians and courts know that WE THE PEOPLE have the power. We will do this with pride, professionalism, and integrity.

Until that time comes, let’s gather together and support those who protect us.
