The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe's Wakpa Waste' Animal Shelter (WWAS) is a safe haven for unwanted animals and pets seized by tribal animal care & control. WWAS networks with shelters and rescues throughout the state to help animals get a second chance in life through adoption. Spayed/neutered animals current on vaccinations become available for adoption at WWAS, and each week animals are transporte

d to adoption partners to make room for more animals. To sign up on the working-cat wait list, please contact Ethel Morgan at 605-964-7387 or email her at [email protected]. WWAS also assists community members with a free pet food (the food bank is open M-F from 3-4pm). WWAS will post pet rehoming ads for CRST community members to support you with self-rehoming.

Starting Saturday, August 23, 2025, the Wakpa Waste' Animal Shelter will now be open 7 days a week!

🕘 Hours of Operation:🕕
6:00 AM - 6:00 PM (weekdays)
9:00 AM - 6:00 PM (weekends)

💟Guidelines for Participation:💟
1️⃣Registration & Vaccinations Required
- All pets must be registered and have updated shots in order to receive food.
2️⃣ Due to limited supply, each household may receive one (1) bag of dog and/or cat food.

Vaccinations are available Monday to Thursday 1:00pm to 2:00pm.

A huge thank you to the Rural Area Veterinary Services - RAVS team for providing a second week of veterinary services in Eagle Butte. They completed 185 surgeries and 380 wellness appointments at the Bingo Hall this week. A special shout out to Juanita and family, Randolph and Cathy for helping the shelter staff register pets with the tribe!
