‼️WARNING‼️

We have a gnarly one for you today😳!!

Steal Trap 🐴 came in for a laceration over the left eye and forehead. Upon doing their exam both Dr. Vaden and Melero discovered that he in fact had broken part of his orbit. With some assistance of HEAVY sedation 🤣 he was able to walk out of here with a brand new face!!

Dr. Vaden was recently called to El Rancho Fortin to aid in boosting the immunity of a new foal born in the La Espiga breeding program. Just a day or two old, the foal was detected as having “failure of passive transfer” and needing help.

When a foal is born, passive transfer of immunity is critical and needs to occur within the first 12 hours post birth. Ideally this passive transfer happens on it’s own through the colostrum produced by the mare. Occasionally the transfer doesn’t take place due to trouble nursing, the mare not producing the colostrum or the foal simply not absorbing the antibodies the way it should. Well established breeding programs are aware of this issue and do post-birth blood draws and us a rapid SNAP test to determine whether the transfer has taken place or help is needed.

Dr. Vaden was able to respond right away and get a plasma infusion completed to ensure this foal the best start possible and protection from several common diseases. After the infusion, there is a two to three day wait and then blood is re-drawn to check antibody levels. This foal now has a clean bill of health and a bright future ahead!
