Did you know there are harmful & toxic ingredients in a majority of horse grooming products? ☠🚫 Did you know the name of the ingredient may be omittted from the label and just called "Fragrance" instead?
I posted one such ingredient yesterday....it is a fragrance, sometimes called Lilial or butylphenyl methylpropional. It is banned in the US for Human Cosmetics, banned in the EU and is in a popular horse grooming product. That particular brand has begun to make some label changes too, BUT that is not the only ingredient that is harmful in that Detangler & Shine product...☠🚫 Beware when a label has "Fragrance" listed 🚫☠

I knew there were toxic ingredients in so many horse grooming products - which is why I’ve chosen to be a resource for horse owners and to create a Non-toxic grooming product line. 🌿
But I am still SHOCKED when I find MORE ingredients that are WORSE ☠️🚫 than the previous ones I have researched. They are in so many horse grooming products!
TRULY SHOCKING 😳
In prep for last Sunday’s ‘Behind the Label’ I did some research on a few of the products still hanging around the barn (on their way out to the trash bin!) and found the ingredient ‘Butylphenyl Methylpropional’ that is banned for use in the US for cosmetics since 2022, and is banned entirely in the EU - it is a known ‘reprotoxic’ - causes reproductive harm. ☠️🚫
This ingredient is used in a ‘commonly used, been around forever, everyone buys it’ detangler/shine product for horses (can you guess what it is? 🤠🪄)
So - if it’s one you have used or that is still in your grooming tote - TOSS IT OUT. Please 🙏

TGP has so many new followers and I thought it would be fun to share a little bit about me…horse & animal lover, builder, mom, grandma, wife…💚
✨I love everything about horses - this is Kingsley, my most favorite unicorn 🦄 , and we like to do the Hunter Derby and Jumper Classes when we show.
✨I have a sweet retired Quarter Horse, Fella and we have my friends horse , Muskrat, who keeps Fella company at our ranch
✨We have a house full of Rhodesian Ridgebacks (3)
✨I’m married to my best friend, Dave - and we are restoring a 160 acre ranch in Southern Oregon and trying to fill it with more longhorns!
✨I’m a mom to 3 grown up kiddos (2 boys and a girl) and I have one grandson (he’s the cutest and loves to 🎣 ) and one daughter-in-law
✨I am always building something - from creating and formulating new products for our horses, to doing ranch projects. It’s kinda what I love - I even built a dining room trestle table from old barn wood!

When multiple people reach out to me with their stories of burned and damaged skin from the same (competitive brand) product, well, it prompted me to start my "Did You Know" Wednesday Series again...
Reading labels: when the ingredients are on the label, just do a quick google search...you will be shocked at what some of those ingredients actually are used for.
☠️❌Chlorhexidine Gluconate is an antiseptic, it does help prevent infection...BUT it is also very drying and when used too much can actually burn and damage the skin. This is an ingredient often used as a skin prep for surgery...not really good as a daily treatment for an area already needing care and healing.
☠️❌Mineral Oil...well, it's a petroleum based product that when used actually provide an occlusive barrier...NOT good when damaged skin needs moisturization, mineral oil may appear to 'coat' the skin, but it actually prevents the skin from breathing, and locks OUT moisture. All the things that contribute to further drying and irritation.
Put those two together and you have recipe for making damaged skin, tail rubbing worse rather than better. My suggestion: use a natural product to heal the skin and bring the moisture balance back to where it should be. Have a question about what can work better? Just DM me...
