EvenStar Farm

EvenStar Farm WWW.EVENSTARFARM.NET We are a 5-acre family farm for self-sustenance as well as providing for the wider community.

We provide an 18-week CSA produce share to 20 or so families from late-May to early October. We also provide tomato canning shares, and fruit is thrown into the basic program as well. We'll also have as an extra, free-range, non-GMO chicken eggs with dark orange yolks, and we are now offerring as an extra, raw cow's milk from our friends at Won Love Farm. Pickup spot is at our farm in Eagle, once

a week, most likely will be Wednesday evenings. Find us here: www.evenstarfarm.net

Although paying for vegetables up front may not be one's first choice, it is a bargain in the long run. Each week members receive an interesting variety of the freshest possible produce, and are often introduced to vegetables they may have never see before. Each weeks’ share will come with a newsletter about farm happenings, the produce of the week, and how to use it. Members will have the benefit of knowing exactly where their food comes from and how it is grown. They will have the opportunity to visit the farm whenever they like and even get their own hands dirty in the process.

We've scrapped a hog clean in years past but this old timer's method of dry curing and cold smoking was new to us. Looks like I'm gonna be building a smoke house.

The Wilsey's from Homestead Natural Foods have lost everything but their home and their cows in the brush fire that has been burning rapidly near the Oregon/Idaho border. They are now going to be in need of help while they try to rebuild their Ranch and take care of the cows. If we can at least...

We have meat chickens for sale (fresh or frozen right now)! They've been fed on non-GMO feed and pastured in our chicken tractors. They are Red Rangers grown for 12 weeks (twice as long as 'regular' meat birds). It's a very tender and flavorful meat. They are $4.35/lb, and range anywhere from 2.5 lbs to 6.5lbs (biggest we've ever had!). They also come with a recipe for roast chicken that will knock your socks off! Call Or text isaac at 761-3290.

Please consider supporting our friends at North End Organic Nursery look to continue their good work in the valley. They have been big supporters of us and other local growers.

We need your help to bring the garden back to Garden City, and turn the former Costume shop into an organic hub for the Treasure Valley

If you don't know about it yet, I encourage you to go check out Ming Studios in Boise! They've got a pretty darn awesome farmer-appreciation type display there right now. I can hardly believe it! Yay for Art and Farming!

Happening today...
For the Hog Killing
Let them stand still for the bullet, and stare the shooter in the
eye,
let them die while the sound of the shot is in the air, let them die
as they fall,
let the jugular blood spring hot to the knife, let its freshet be full,
let this day begin again the change of hogs into people, not the
other way around,
for today we celebrate again our lives’ wedding with the world,
for by our hunger, by this provisioning, we renew the bond.--Wendell Berry

First FROST was last nite...kinda early. Only killed the squash though. Tonight might do some more damage. Goodnight, garden!

Noticed this out in the field the other day...wondered what it was for a moment, then remembered...the HAIL!

Saw a lot of red out there today so went to harvest some big tomatoes. Most of them were rotten. :(

Bacon!

Bacon!

When my favorite book series ends, all I need is “grief-bacon.”

Golf-ball sized hail last week. Yep. Kinda devastated some things. Stay tuned to see if these things can revive themselves, or not. :(

We rounded up the broiler chickens last night for their trip to the butcher today. Our 5 yr old daughter is super into this! She was super helpful in getting them rounded up, which took over an hour. This morning, while still rubbing sleep from her eyes, she said "I need go to check on those chickens." She is a hard core chicken farmer!"

Send some good, cooling energy to our plants! Some of them seem like they can't quite handle all this heat! :(

We are sure enjoying this first week of CSA pickups and meeting all our lovely new members!

You may be wondering how we did with last night's frost...a-ok! Only thing with frost bite was a few weeds! Woot!

05/16/2013

Was a great day on the farm today. Got ALL the tomatoes planted! And the zucchini! Time with good friends helping and even dinner! And... someone just drove up to our farm looked over the fence, and said "How do I get your veggies?! I've heard they are THE BEST!" (I have no idea how these people found us or what they've heard from whom, but I'll take it!). And as if that's not enough our 4 piggies arrived today too!

05/15/2013

We've had plant casualties now due to frost and some due to heat. Fruit is not looking great. Building orchard irrigation system. Getting ready for pigs! Tilling. Time to plant hot crops. Crops look good overall and so do the weeds! Yep. It's that time of year. Total, complete craziness.
