HAPPY HALLOWEEN! I spent this week putting a SCARY amount of honey in jars-would you like to know what kinds?

1️⃣ 🕸️LATE SEASON🕸️ This year’s batch is not quite as dark-droughts, amirite?? But if you like the malty, bold, red-hued honey bees make at the end of summer, this is for you!

2️⃣ 🐦‍⬛ HOT HONEY IS RESTOCKED🐦‍⬛ I accidentally maced myself TWICE grinding up our homegrown chilis-my suffering is your gain

3️⃣ 🦇LATE SEASON CHUNK HONEY🦇 Would you believe I forgot about a few comb frames in these supers? This is a VERY SMALL BATCH. You’ve been warned!

4️⃣ 👻LEMONGRASS HONEY👻 is back! We haven’t grown lemongrass in a couple of years but I got my groove back in ‘24! THIS HONEY IS SO YOM, but it needs another week to infuse! Look for this next weekend!

Hey, ! The time has come for your life to change-we’re bringing our WORLD-FAMOUS LEMON CURD starting this Saturday!
IYKYK-this classic recipe is love at first bite-and ours is MUCH LIGHTER with half the sugar, and almost no butter at all. New Bee Ranchers know-our lemon curd is creamy, custardy, lemony-the GOAT. We don’t typically offer samples, but I’ll be slinging them this weekend as we introduce our flagship product at this market!🎉🎉🎉🎉

Here’s a random smattering of Ranch Ephemera to show you what we’ve been up to:

Fall apiary work is in full swing! I spent some time this week refilling feeders-it’s hard to underscore how hungry these beez are-lack of rain has created an autumn nectar dearth unlike any I’ve ever seen as a beekeeper-so that means FEEDING. The girls got another fifteen gallons of sugar syrup this week!
They also got entrance reducers-these little wooden hive components help reduce robbing and keep mice out of the boxes when weather gets cooler.
The good news is, I’m seeing POLLEN, and even though I keep complaining about drought, all the Ranch Apiaries are feeling strong and robust. That’s good news going into winter!

Stay tuned for a larger MARKET UPDATE this weekend-in the meantime we’ll be at and Saturday and Sunday for your SMALL-BATCH, SEASONAL loot!

UPDATES! You want em, we’ve got em!

We have been BUSY BUSY BEES this rainy (YAY) week!

🌱 The last of the Thai basil has been harvested, that means the LAST Thai Basil+Mint honey has been made until next year-YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO

🍈 The green tomatos have ALSO been harvested! This means two things: the end of Summer (SOB) and the beginning of Green Tomato Pickle season (HOORAY!) These are my favorite autumn pickles, and the best thing to put on a turkey sandwich.

🌶️ It is HOT SAUCE SEASON-we’ve got three kinds! Smoky, Rhubarb, Garlic Pickle-which are you? (I can be all three in one day)

🍇SOMETHING NEW! I got out my granny’s fruit processing mill and dyed my hands purple to bring you the GRAPE-IEST JAM EVER-Low Sugar Concord Grape Jam??? Yes please!

👻 Have you been missing out on spooky candles? They are restocked, but we tend to sell out every weekend! (So drag your sleepy buns to market earlier!)

✨That’s the news-we’ll be at , , and (with our selection of krauts, pickles, hot sauces) Saturday.

-New Bee Ranch hires STARCATCHERS. We offer an UNPARALLELED level of customer service, and will require your complete attention during all markets. The right candidate will maintain a dazzling, friendly, whip-smart, calm-under-pressure attitude at all times. Our team is always punctual and never has interest in scrolling phones.
-Must have own transportation
-Must be able to lift 50 lbs and be comfortable standing for 4-6 hours

Job Details for markets: Load in/out at NBR kitchen in Eagleville on way to market, drive to markets in greater Phila. area, warmly greet and interact with market customers and staff, selling NBR products, communicating with NBR management

Job Details for Kitchen: prepare seasonal NBR products, maintaining exacting cleanliness and hygiene standards for a commercial kitchen, working with NBR management for organization of daily/weekly prep tasks, ability to self-start

These requirements may be filled by several applicants separately, or perhaps a single individual looking for growth and challenge! Every member of our staff regulates their own schedule and pace with a goal to help the overall team-in many cases, you may create your own kitchen schedule.

New Bee Ranch believes in salary transparency! The right candidate will receive $15/hr for kitchen work, $20/hr for market work. We will ask a lot from you in terms of professionalism and positivity, and want to compensate you accordingly.

GETTIN THESE GIRLZ THICC

One of the ways beekeeping keeps me from getting bored is: EVERY YEAR IS DIFFERENT!

We’re deep into winter prep right now- (crazy, right??) which means reducing empty space, reducing mite loads, and-this year-FEEDING HUNGRY BEES. 🐽🐽🐽

The long-lasting drought this summer means the Late Season Honey will be lighter and less plentiful from last year-I will keep you posted when I get time to extract it! It ALSO means I have never had such hungry galz.

RANCH RECAP:
Honeybees need flowers for nectar to produce honey, and flowers need rain! Since we haven’t had much rain, we’re leaving a LOTT of honey on the beez and feeding our apiaries early.
Remember! the well-being of our colonies is more important than any of us, and we’re not trying to take all of their food for you 😉

Our bees are building their winter brood NOW, and I’m going to feed them like the little hogs they are so they have fat bees and plenty of food through winter.

DON’T WORRY-The Ranch has a lot of honey for you! And a lot of other tantalizing seasonal loot.

WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE??? OK-first, there HAS FINALLY BEEN SOME RAIN THANK GOODNESS which means the girls will have some food again! Let me break down what you are seeing here: 🌈The drought this summer-I’ll say it again-has drastically reduced nectar and pollen for our hungry ladies which means 1. *way* less honey, and 2. ROBBING BEHAVIOR! 🌈Robbing behavior means foragers will invade other, weaker colonies and steal their recources! RUDE 🌈To help prevent this, I have closed all upper entrances to my hives (temporarily.) Since beez store their honey up top, this helps prevent robbing 🌈I always have a few colonies that prefer entering/exiting through their top entrance (I call these colonies ‘top-loaders’) so when I close their upper entrance they need to recalibrate 🌈That’s what you see in this video! A lot of folks asked me this weekend about how the bees are handling this drought, so I took a little viddy for you! ✨Some facts about bees in a drought AND heatwave:✨ ☀️YES-bees need water just like you and me! This is the first year I’ve ever put out a bee waterer-normally the nearby creek and residual water from my garden sprinkler are enough, but NOT this year. ☀️ Droughts shut off nectar! No rain= no blossoms= no honey production. The bees are frustrated! (See my recent post about robbing) ☀️ Bees use water just like us-they need hydration, and water helps them cool down the colony in the hive. ☀️ Bees don’t get deep water! The rocks in this waterer are so they don’t drown-listen, bees are VERY smart, but don’t we all know smart folks who lack common sense? ☀️ WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR YOU? This hot dearth means the summer honey harvest will be smaller than other years, so there will be no large jars of honey for a while. Take this opportunity to try a small batch infused honey, or a different apiary’s variety than last time! Let’s talk about 😡GANGSTER BEES😡 If you live in SEPA and are a mammal, you may have noticed how unusually HOT AND DRY it has been. No rain and too hot➡️ Flowers stop blooming (and producing nectar)➡️ Nothing for the bees to forage➡️ 🥵BEES TURN INTO GANGSTERS🥵 When a robust colony has no nectar to forage, they turn into dirty thieves and rob their neighbors, and it just gets worse when a beekeeper opens hive covers during apiary checks. That’s what happened today-our first day below 90F in a week-I had to cut this apiary check short due to robbing behavior. After checking this colony and putting their cover back on, robbers from other hives were bearding up over their upper entrance, trying to get in and steal-I tucked this grass in to (non-permanently) plug up their entrance until the robbers move on. This looks like an example of GOOD BEES GONE BAD, but really these girlz simply have nothing to forage and they’re frustrated. Some rain would help-especially because this dearth will cause an early end to honey production (and I know how you feel about that.)
