Lesson kids had a fun afternoon. It was humid and hot and then it cooled down and started raining and thundering....we were like "well whatever.... let's do inside lessons today". Minnie and Tully were good sports. 😁 The kids learned about grooming, hoof care and parts of the horse and then helped with afternoon feeding.

The Duke and Dutches head back to the rescue today. This was our plan when we first fostered them in December but were kind of hoping it might work out for them to stay. We are a little sad about that part but our facility is just not right for their needs long term. :-(

We do want to thank everyone for the support and assistance you have given to help these two beautiful ponies!

If you still want to help them and follow their journey please connect you with Sarah Paige at Whole Horse Equine Rescue or I would be glad to do an introduction!

With Duke and Snickers, she has 18 horses and ponies that can use all the love and support they can get!

Nice little ba****ck ride today.

We found a deer path that made a circle through the snow. Hannah wanted to do it by herself so I stayed back and waited. :-) She sure loves her pony!

51° in February in Maine is good for me!

2 miles with Rose and some fun pics. She had lots of energy. I think she was hoping I would let her take advantage of the 30 mph speed limit. We haven't been able to ride on the road since the flood in December because there has been soooo much traffic, particularly trucks, with rt 5 closed. Now that it is open again and East Andover is back to normal we are ready to "hit the road" again!

Wanted to share some very cool pictures of the Duke (Ducati) that I found online.

I wish we could find an experienced rider who would do some cross country or trail stuff with him. He may be in his early twenties but has so much to give. He is an energetic passionate horse who just wants to have fun. Going around in circles in an arena is not the place for him but put him in cross country, versatility, trick training...things to engage his busy mind and I believe you'd have a dream. 💕

My heart is struggling with letting him go when our foster contract is up in April but I already have Rose who has a very similar busy personality. Honestly, when we first agreed to foster Duke my mind was thinking retirement home but I don't think he's ready for that. Oh, how I would love to do the in-hand versatility challenges at ERR with him this year. Talk about a head-turner and a class clown all in one horse! 😁

Well, for now we will love and hug him and see what the future brings.

A kind of sad day on the farm today. :-(

We lost Prince last night. He had been kind of quite the last couple days but was still eating fine and seemed ok otherwise. I put him in his kennel last night (a dog kennel filled with hay with a horse blanket wrapped around it) like I did any night that was below 20 and this morning we found that he had went on in his sleep. :-(

I don't know much about chickens really and we don't know how old he was either. He moved in here on May 4th, 2019 and refused to leave. He was basically one of the "herd". In good weather anywhere the horses were, you usually could find Prince close by. In the Winter he basically just stayed in the barn because he wasn't a big fan of the snow. Ask anyone who ever joined us for a cookout or outside party of any kind and they will tell you he was like a dog...he would go from person to person begging for snacks. He didn't really care if he knew you or not. :-P One day I left the front door open while I was cleaning and came back in to find Prince picking at the cat food in the kitchen (Ya, he was a food motivated bird).

So, it is a sad day but we are glad he felt safe and happy here for close to 5 years.

Duke and Snickers update:

Both sweet ponies are doing good today. They are a little more clingy to each other than they were prior to their adventures but that's understandable. I have also noticed they are more attached to me than they were before. When I arrive at the barn they are more attentive to where I am and following me more than they used to. ❤️

Snickers minor leg injury still needs a little attention but it isn't slowing her down any. :-)

Sure wish I had a video of yesterday when we walked in the driveway with Duke! There was some happy horse conversation between him and Snickers! You could see the relief on their faces to be together again!

Wow. Just wow! What a Snickers and Duke update for today!

The last 24 hours have brought a range of emotions from living in a nightmare you can't wake up from to joy that bubbles up from the tips of your frozen toes and comes out in giggles and tears. Feelings of panic, failure, fear and grief of what could be while forcing yourself to stay focused on the next step in front of you. Yes, I know Justin said I didn't panic but inside I wanted to sit down in the woods and cry in the wind chill of -15.

I love these two goobers so much and walking through the dark woods by myself at night (the rest of the team was on the way) and seeing coyote tracks all around and knowing there's a half frozen swamp covered in snow that they could wander out onto, a river that could fall in and a road where they could run out in front of a car. Wow! I prayed and prayed hard the entire time, out loud for much of it.

And then....when we asked for help, boy did we get it. The horse community from as much as 2 hrs away showed up and descended on the target area like a little army to find these two beautiful seniors!

AND it hasn't stopped yet! We received a surprise package on our doorstep of food and treats for us and treats for the ponies, another friend is in the way with a hot beef stew and bread AND round pen panels are being set up as we speak so they don't get out again.

It makes me proud to be part of this community!

Thank you to everyone!!!!

Nothing like snowplowing with a truck that doesn't have a plow because our guest ponies got to have breakfast.

Almost got stuck trying to get back out but made it after a couple of attempts.

Get home and the tractor is stuck. This wet sticky snow is a mess. Ya, we got the tractor out, too.

Hahahaha 🤣

The Duke and Snickers got a farrier visit today. I didn't get any pictures of Duke with the farrier because I was holding the leadline.

What good ponies though! Whoever adopts these two is going to get some sweet horses.

*Stand for farrier ✓
*Stand for grooming ✓
*Good for dentist ✓
*Stand tied (even if you walk away)✓
*Stay in a stall (although they do prefer to be out and chew a little if they get bored)✓
*8yr old can blanket them and lead them✓
*Polite during feeding time✓
*Excellent lunge line manners ✓

Duke: Class clown. Not above nibbling on your jacket sleeve or the lead line, sticking his face in the snow, and/or making "Mr. Ed" faces because he thinks it's funny. 🤣

Snickers: A classic no nonsense pony mare BUT when you win her over she will try hard for you. She is the kind that will respect you if you respect her.

As the time goes we will test out other things with them and keep you updated.
❤️🩷

Wow....

Today a 9 yr old Welsh pony that was bailed from a kill buyer in NY just last week has been relisted at another auction in PA for twice the money. 😡 He is a good pony so *might* get a good home or *might* end up in a slaughter pipeline again.

AND this is why we struggle with rehoming horses. Not everyone is honest. Too many will say what a "wonderful home" they will provide and all the time they only want to make a quick $.

Yes, you can have a buy back contract but frankly, unless you can afford to keep a lawyer on retainer, contracts aren't worth the paper they are written on.

*I know this is a controversial topic and I have no intention of arguing with anyone about it*. It's the dishonest people that bug me.

Update for the Duke and Snickers fan club! (I really should get these two their own FB page!) Hahaha 🤣

They each got their own smartpak drawers this week. (Multivitamin/Mineral supplements for both and a mare supplement for Snickers) AND we had a donation of feed and shavings for them!

Also, received another financial donation which will help towards their farrier visit on Monday!

Thanks so much for all the love you have been sending their way!

She was very alert because Minnie wasn't with us. It is almost always "Rose & Minnie" so she gets a little worried when she can't find her little buddy. :-p Guess I would rather have my little buddy with us, too.

Wow! What a fantastic 35 minutes with these two!

It was obstacle introduction day. We don't know what has been done previously in this department so we approached it as if they knew nothing and the amazing amount of TRY these ponies offered made our hearts happy! They both asked questions, tried, sometimes said, "Not quite ready for that yet" but there were never fireworks or anything I would consider unmanageable.

Details of the session in the pictures if you want them. :-)

Good pony day today.

COLDER than yesterday. We got some riding in with Rose and Minnie yesterday when it was warmer but today we just walked them about a mile. They always enjoy going out no matter what we are doing. Right now we figure it is best to get all the time in we can while the footing is good. After the ice last week I thought we would be shut down for Winter.

We also took Snickers and Duke for half mile walk. They did great! Duke was a little more "gawky" than Snickers but he didn't do anything bad at all. Snickers was just happy as a clam to get out and didn't seem to be afraid of anything we came across. She marched right along happily beside Hannah.

At one point we came across the downed tree that is pictured. I told Hannah we would see how they did and to be careful if Snickers decided to jump across it. To my surprise they both walked right up and stepped over it without even batting an eye and stepped through the brush on the other side. Wonder how much trail riding they have done?

Hannah's only comment..... Snickerdoodle walks faster than Minnie. 😜

A little light work on the lunge line today for Snickers and Duke.

They both did absolutely wonderfully and clearly have had some really solid training. Not an ounce of defiance or bad behavior from either one of them. We certainly didn't ask for much today. It was more of a let's-get-to-know-eachother session. A time to see some of the strengths and weaknesses and evaluate any physical concerns. I think a chiropractor visit might be an order for both of them.

Very productive day and gives us a little bit of a foundation of where to work to from here. ❤️🩷 And what a wonderful learning experience for Hannah!
