UPDATE: He’s home safe and well! 😻

PLEASE SHARE!! This little man has lost his way - His name is Ludwig and he is currently missing. He was last seen near 2761 Madonna Drive in Eden, NY, 14057 on 8/30. He had a red collar on with his name and the owners phone number (716)392-9250, as well as a Tractive tracker (black) as shown in the photo and a grayish glow in the dark cover over it. His owners are not sure if it is still on him.

Here are some photos of him. He is around 10-11 lbs.

Following on from our previous posts the following changes have been made by the CDC and there has been a full reversal on their planned requirements for travel across the Canadian border.

“For dogs that have been only in dog rabies-free or low-risk countries in the 6 months before U.S. entry, this is the only form that is needed. A receipt will be emailed to you upon submission of the form. You can print the receipt or show it on your phone.

Note that in addition to this form, the dog must appear healthy upon arrival, must be at least 6 months old, and must have a microchip identified with a universal scanner.

There are no longer requirements for USDA endorsed certificates for dogs meeting these criteria.”

The link below takes you to the online form that can be filled out the day of travel and printed to be shown to a border control officer.

!!!!! IMPORTANT TRAVEL INFORMATION !!!!!

While we have been preparing our hospital for implementing the new requirements for travel across to Canada with your dog, the CDC has just released a new statement today (07/22/24) advising that travel to Canada and back will now NOT be included with the travel requirements that go into effect on August 1st.

This will come as a huge relief to many families who travel regularly across the border for personal, health, sporting or breeding purposes. Please take a minute to read the most up to date press release so that you can still take appropriate measures as needed.

CDC has clarified and simplified the process for bringing dogs into the United States from rabies-fr

They say kids grow up quickly on you… well we could say the same for dogs! One minute they’re fluffy little gangly legged goofballs and the next minute they’re a handsome grown boy! ‘Gus’ who is a labradoodle came in for his routine annual exam yesterday with Dr Sara and he was such a good boy for his visit with us. 🐾

“I’ve found a lump” is something we hear daily, and more often than not it carries with it worry about what it might be, does it need removing or often the biggest fear - is it cancer and if so what can be done?

Our approach is usually very simple - we perform what is called a fine needle aspirate. This is a very simple procedure that takes just a few seconds to harness some cells from the mass using a needle and syringe no different from what we use to administer a vaccine. It is often confused with a biopsy which would be where we remove an actual piece of the lump in question to assess it further.

The smears that are made contain often hundreds to thousands of cells that after being prepped and stained are examined under the microscope. Given that we perform FNA’s so routinely, our veterinarians assess the vast majority of the samples in house which means we can provide information on the cell type immediately. On some occasions however, it is preferred to get a second opinion from a board certified pathologist and in that case we will recommend sending the sample out to our reference laboratory before deciding the best course of action.

So what do we see under the microscope?

In the microscope images attached these are wonderful examples of the type of cells we see very often and for one of the most common ‘lumps’ that cause worry. These cells are adipocytes - or in simple terms ‘fat cells’. These aspirates were taken just yesterday from a patient with a soft mass that the owner had found on her dog. Each type of cell in the body has a different appearance depending upon where it is arising from and as clinicians we are trained to recognize and know these. This ‘lump’ is nothing more than a Lipoma (fatty tumor) where there has been an accumulation of fatty tissue develop. These tumors are benign and not of concern and usually only need excising if they become particularly large and cumbersome (as in the photo above them) or are causing the patient distress based on their location.

For this patient, a simple procedure brought relief to his owner, identified what the growth was and determined that no further action is needed.

‘Misty’ couldn’t wait to be the one to announce that we are now offering Class IV Laser Therapy within both our hospital and in the comfort of your own home through our sister practice - Fetch The Vet Mobile Veterinary Practice. We have been working away behind the scenes to train our veterinary team on use of a brand new therapeutic modality for your furry family members!

Laser Therapy (Photobiomodulation therapy) is fast-acting and versatile. It uses light energy to reach target tissue and results in decreased inflammation, decreased pain, and accelerated healing. It can effectively treat a wide variety of conditions including pre-surgical, post-surgical, acute and chronic disease states.

Some of the most common chronic disease states that we will be able to provide supplemental care for include:

- Degenerative Joint Disease
- Lick Granulomas
- Intervertebral Disc Disease
- Osteoarthritis
- Inflammatory Bowel Disease
- Idiopathic Cystitis in Cats
- Degenerative myelopathy/neuropathy

If you are interested in incorporating this form of therapy into your pets health care then reach out to us and one of our team members will be able to help guide you further.

‘Misty’ has been struggling with this very chronic Lick Granuloma on her leg for many many months and it has failed to respond to all other medical routes we have taken. Her mum is very eager to see how Laser Therapy can help. She has received two treatments so far and we are already seeing forward progress.

Doesn’t ‘Misty’ rock her safety Doggles well!
