πβ°HAPPY NEW YEAR from Mobile Animal Care! ππ₯πΎ
π A few quick tips for our furry friends who don't enjoy fireworks and loud celebrations:
- Tire them out! Take them on a long walk, go for a run, or play hard. This will ensure that your pet can sleep peacefully through the noise. If they don't sleep, at least they will be less stressed.
- Keep away from the fireworks and find a safe, quiet place to chill! Many pets are lost on 4th of July and New Years because they get scared and take off. Avoid outside trips after 10pm if possible. If you must, it's best to have your pet wear a harness and a collar with identifying info tags. Find the quietest spot in your house, set up some cozy blankets/pet bed away from windows.
- Distract! Provide favorite toys or treats that will keep them focused for long periods. We recommend a frozen Kong with peanut butter, Greek yogurt, or Cheez-Whiz to extend play time.
- Burrito! If you don't have a Thunder-shirt for your pet, you can use a large blanket, wide ace bandage, scarf or towel to wrap your pet up. It will feel like a hug, or weighted blanket. Studies have shown that being compressed reduces stress and anxiety in pets. It should be snug but not too tight.
- Buddy system! If possible, don't leave your pet home alone if you know they're upset by all the noise.
- Calming aids! If you feel your pet needs additional help regarding their phobia, we recommend trying a natural calming supplement. Most pet treats that market themselves as "calming" have tryptophan, theanine, chamomile, and even melatonin. These are all safe, food-based ingredients that won't knock your pet out, but may help them relax slightly.
