This afternoon, Zinnia landed safely at our Rescue Center. Unfortunately, sheโ€™s feeling a bit overwhelmed.๐Ÿ˜• Transport days are tough; the rides are long, the van is full of unfamiliar faces and animals, and it can be stressful.

When she got off the van, it was evident to our crew that Zinnia needed a little extra comfort. We swaddled her in a blanket and set up a pop-up crate in the back office, away from the other kennels and sounds of barking. ๐Ÿ˜– Her little wrinkled jowls and worried eyes are the only things peering out from her blanket, but we think she feels a bit safer.๐Ÿคž

We know a foster home could work wonders for Zinniaโ€™s spirit. ๐Ÿ  Sheโ€™s just 2 years old, friendly with dogs and cats, and as sweet as they come.

Be Zinniaโ€™s hero and submit a foster application at nycscr.org/foster

"Animals choose to come into our lives. They are part of our karma and we are part of theirs. Sometimes they are found "...
08/04/2024

"Animals choose to come into our lives. They are part of our karma and we are part of theirs. Sometimes they are found "abandoned" or wandering, in the middle of a road or in danger in the heart of the night; other times they are found at the front door of the house, as sent by fate; other times they arrive from loved ones, neighbors or strangers.

Animals were already in our karma at least. In this life, as in the others. According to Brian Weiss, the same animal often incarnates itself several times during our lifetime, simply changing shape and coat, and being recognized by small gestures, details and subtle habits. This is clearly seen with cats.

When a "new" animal enters our house and knows exactly where to go, it's a sign that it simply says back. Many people, at the moment of death, receive the soothing vision not of a deceased relative, but rather of an animal. This means a lot. Because for our soul there is no difference between one species and another.

Animals are in our evolutionary path just like we are in theirs, for this reason we must respect them as sacred creatures and take the greatest care of them. They are part of us, in a different form of the universe."

She would be happiest in a lowkey home as the only pup.โ™ฅ๏ธ๐Ÿพ She loves going on walks but is just as happy to spend the afternoon lounging around and binge-watching Netflix. If you have found and rescued kittens, you may be wondering how to catch the mom cat. ๐Ÿค”

It is super important to make that effort! Do not just scoop up kittens and move on! ๐Ÿšซ Leaving the mother cat behind leads her to the exact same fate in just a couple of months.

If kittens are around, itโ€™s very likely the mama is around, even if you havenโ€™t physically seen her. It is not typical for a whole litter of kittens to be abandoned.

So how do you go about finding herโ“Place the kittens in a trap or carrier at the location you found them. Place a set trap in front of the carrier or trap the kittens are in and bait it with food as normal. Placing a sheet over the traps/carrier creates a little โ€œtunnelโ€ straight to her babies!

And hereโ€™s the important part - go away. ๐Ÿ˜‚ Mama cat is not coming back with a scary human lurking around. Let the kittens and the trap do the work for you. If you are able to go inside and monitor from a window or get in your car, that would be best.

Good luck and happy trapping!

Edit for clarification: Going away doesnโ€™t mean leaving the area and the trap unattended. NEVER leave a trap unattended. It means donโ€™t stand there expecting mom to walk in the trap with you watching. Go inside. Monitor from a window. If you are at a public location, park somewhere you can still see the trap and wait in your car.

07/27/2024

CAT TRAPPING TIP:

You MUST cover the trap up immediately after the cat is in the trap. It makes them feel a little bit safer and often quickly quiets them down from injuring themselves trying to get out.
Itโ€™s almost cruel not to cover them up with anything and transport them like that, please donโ€™t do that ๐Ÿ˜ข

We often use blankets or trap covers. Easy peasy.

โ€ผ๏ธOliver needs your helpโ€ผ๏ธ

My husband and I were going for a walk on a hot Monday morning (July 15th) when we walked past a gray and white cat sitting in the middle of the sidewalk. He didnโ€™t move or turn to look at us as we passed (he was sitting with his back toward us as we approached). He just stared straight ahead, even as we passed. It struck me as odd, so I turned and went back to him. He did respond in a friendly manner to pets, but he was very, very thin. His meow was very weak โ€“ almost a whisper; and he had small cuts/marks on his sides. He was very dirty. He seemed lethargic, weak and disoriented. One ear was crumpled. We felt he needed immediate help in the extreme heat and humidity weโ€™ve been experiencing. My husband scooped him up and I ran home to get the cat carrier and car. Our vet took him immediately. We discovered he was loaded with fleas and ear mites and had been neutered and declawed sometime in the past. He was scanned for a microchip, but there was none. The marks on his sides were superficial and had been made from other animals attacking him. He was starving and dehydrated. From looking at his teeth and general condition, the vets guessed that he was at least 12 years old. His fur was wiry, thick and dirty โ€“ an indicator of a long time on the street. How he was able to survive is a mystery, as being declawed left him essentially defenseless and unable to hunt/kill food. Yet, he is a love with people, wanting to be cuddled and rub his face against yours. We named him Oliver.

Oliver is unsteady at times because his pelvis has been broken and healed improperly. We cannot imagine what kind of pain this puts him in, but he's so happy to be around us we think he hides it for our benefit. Besides being malnourished from the constant fight for food, he is struggling with some chronic ear problems we think might be related to the same injury that damaged his pelvis, possibly from being hit by a car sometime in his past. The vet suggested at least a month to get his weight up and maybe get a better perspective on his challenges going forward. Most likely this will result in many follow up visits to get him to live the life that he deserves. The good news is Oliver's FIV and FeLV tests came back negative, and his bloodwork was unremarkable for a 12+ year old cat.

Kitten angels would like to thank his rescuers for saving this beautiful boy.

If you would like to donate to Oliver's ongoing care, it would be greatly appreciated as this sweet guy has an uphill battle ahead of him.

๐ŸšจOur shelters are at capacity, and we urgently need foster homes to help us provide the best care for our dogs. Without your help, we canโ€™t continue rescuing more animals in need.

Fostering significantly increases a dogโ€™s chance of getting adopted. Not only are dogs more at ease, better socialized, and often healthier when in a foster home, but the photos and feedback we get from fosters are invaluable to helping our pets find homes!

We are temporarily freezing all non-critical intakes while we work to expand our foster network, connect adopters with our wonderful dogs and cats, and diligently work to get our pets into homes.๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ’ž๐Ÿพ

Fostering is a selfless act and it quite literally saves lives. Learn more about our fostering program and become a Foster Hero at nycscr.org/foster

I was saying to myself just this morning, "Dexter", I said, "Dexter, you know what you need? You need a person all your own". So I sat down to write the post for the nice people at Out of The Pits Rescue, because apparently that is the kind of thing they do, find nice people for extremely intelligent and lovable pups who are....I shudder to type this...LAPLESS. That's right, I have no lap to lay my head on at night while my people watch TV and mindlessly rub my ears while I drift off to sleep. So if you have a lap and you think you might be my people, then here is a little about me.
I am the perfect size, not too big and not too small. The last time they put me on a scale I was about 40 #. And since I am 1-1/2 years old I likely won't get any bigger. I currently live in a foster home with children, big dogs and little dogs, cats and chickens and I get along with everyone. I am not a fan of the foster family's goat, but I've been told that not everyone has goats (thank goodness).
Did I mention how awesome I am? I am housebroken and crate trained and I pride myself on being very polite when meeting new people. I usually just sit by their feet waiting for them to pet me. Jumping on people is for amateurs and an amateur I am not. My foster folks taught me to Sit, Shake and Laydown. In fact, I often will try all in one shot, hoping that will earn me a tasty treat. All I want to do is please.
My very favorite thing to do is take a ride in the car. Jingle those keys and I will jump into action, hoping you will take me exploring...boy do I love exploring. I also love playing fetch and can occupy myself with any of my toys. At least once a day I feel the need to do some zoomy's around the house. A boy needs his exercise after all. I would love a big fenced yard or an active family that plans to take me on lots of adventures.
My bags are packed and I am ready for my next adventure. Could you be the one for me?
