Over the years there has been a substantial increase in the prevalence of the disease affecting unvaccinated dogs in all areas in the United States. Previously, Leptospirosis was thought to pose a risk to dogs in wet, rural areas and for dogs that swim in standing water.
Leptospirosis is a highly contagious disease that can be transmitted to humans.

The AAHA 2023 Canine Vaccination Guidelines have now officially been updated to reflect a change in status of the leptospirosis vaccine from non-core to core.
