What is Popcorning?

Guinea pigs 'popcorn' as a sign of happiness and excitement. It's a joyful behavior where they jump and twist their bodies in mid-air. You might notice them doing this when they are out of their cage, playing with toys, or interacting with their owners. It's a way for them to release their energy and show that they are happy.

Souther California Guinea Pig Rescue is a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming of neglected, abandoned, and at-risk Guinea Pigs.

Their adoptable Guinea Pigs are cared for in homes by foster volunteers, and their organization operates entirely on donations. Their network spans the whole of Southern California, and work to serve every community throughout Orange County, Los Angeles County, and Ventura County.

They have over 30 years of combined experience working in Guinea Pig rescue and their goal is simple: save as many Guinea Pigs as possible, and place them into loving, permanent homes. They are passionate and small, but mighty!

To ensure your guinea pig's physical and mental well-being, it is essential to provide them with floor time, which offers exercise and mental stimulation. Without proper floor time, your guinea pig cannot live a healthy and happy life. Moreover, it is an excellent opportunity for you to bond with your pet by joining them on the floor for some interactive playtime.

Floor time is when you provide a large and secure space for your guinea pigs to run around and explore. This exercise helps them stay physically fit and provides a change of environment, which is essential for proper mental stimulation. Just imagine living in the same room all the time, looking at the same walls; it would be enough to drive anyone crazy, and animals are no exception.

Floor time is an essential part of your guinea pig's daily routine, and it is recommended for them a minimum of one hour per day. During this time, your guinea pig can run around, play, forage for treats, and bond with you, providing them with much-needed mental and physical stimulation.

To ensure their safety and comfort, choose an appropriate area in your home that is easy to clean, such as a Kitchen, bathroom, or any room large enough with a wood or laminated floor. Keep other pets seperated from the area to avoid any potential accidents.

If you plan to have outdoor “floor time” , ensure that the grass is free of fertilizer, grass seed, or any other potentially harmful things. It's crucial to consider the weather conditions as your guinea pigs need adequate protection from the sun. Avoid putting your guinea pigs outside in cold or rainy weather, as these conditions can be detrimental to their overall health.

Guinea pigs have a natural instinct to run and move around, especially when they are happy and active, it is also an indication of their playful behavior, particularly when they’re with another guinea pig. When they run in circles, it's usually a sign that they are feeling energetic and playful. They may chase each other in fast loops when they are excited or playful. This behavior is called "zoomies", and it's a way for guinea pigs to burn off energy and express their happiness.

Thank you for sending us this video of Myron and Stanley zooming around on our Lookout Lounge and Loop loft. This is a great sign of happy guinea pig pairs and another reason to have TWO guinea pigs. Providing an environment like this allows your piggies to not only entertain themselves, but you too!

What to feed your Guinea Pig.. Part 2!

Vitamin C! 🥕

Guinea pigs must have adequate Vitamin C in their diet. Do NOT put Vitamin C in their water!

It should come from produce with high vitamin c content.

Such as: Parsley, Romaine Lettuce, Bell Peppers and Dandelions with a piece of Carrot added occasionally.

A healthy adult Guinea Pig diet is based on quality Hay Grass!

Timothy Hay and Guinea Pig Pellets without seeds, nuts or color treats should be available at all times.
Babies under 6 months and pregnant sows need Alfalfa hay.
A constant supply of hay provides fiber to keep teeth and digestive system healthy!

This gorgeous customer cage pulls inspiration from the Cage of Aquarius, CCCages Creation. Customization at its finest, this is a great example of how to make it your own! Tiffany-Ann Bottcher upgraded from the Large to XL allowing her boys the recommended space and providing enough room for both ramps to run along the back wall. This provides better access to the recessed corners under the lofts where a lot of the mess occurs. Adding our stand and bins provides plenty of storage for the extras while keeping everything neat, organized and aesthetically pleasing so Louis and Carl can happily be a part of the family in the main living space! 😍
