Make a Splash Safely This Summer! #VCMCPetSafety
Summer is almost here and it's time to cool down! But while pools can be a fun way to beat the heat for you, it's important to remember that not all pets are natural swimmers. Here are some safety tips to keep your furry friend safe in and around the pool:
โ๏ธ Never leave your pet unattended around a pool.
โ๏ธ Not all dogs are doggy paddlers! Use a life jacket for pets who are weak swimmers or unfamiliar with pools.
โ๏ธ Teach your pet how to get out of the pool safely. Create easy-to-exit steps or ramps.
โ๏ธ Keep pool chemicals out of reach.
โ๏ธ Provide plenty of fresh, cool water away from the pool.
โ๏ธ Rinse your pet off after swimming to remove chlorine or salt.
โ๏ธ Be aware of the signs of heatstroke: excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting. If you see these signs, get your pet to a cool place and contact your veterinarian immediately.
By following these simple tips, you can ensure your pet has a safe and fun summer by the pool!

February is Spay and Neuter Awareness Month.
๐พ Spay & Neuter: A Pawsitively Responsible Choice! ๐พ Here are 3 important reasons why spaying and neutering your fur baby is an act of love and responsibility:
Prevent Unplanned Litters: ๐๐พ Every pup and kitty deserves a loving home, and spaying/neutering helps control pet overpopulation. By preventing unplanned litters, we contribute to a brighter future for all pets. Let's break the cycle and give every furball the chance they deserve! ๐โค๏ธ #SpayAndNeuter #PetOverpopulation
Healthier, Happier Lives: ๐ Spaying and neutering reduce the risk of certain cancers and behavioral issues, leading to a longer, healthier, and more joyful life for your furry friend. It's a proactive step toward ensuring your pet's well-being and happiness! ๐ฅ๐ถ #HealthyPets #HappyTails
Build a Stronger Bond: ๐ Without the distractions of mating behaviors, spayed and neutered pets often become more focused, affectionate companions. Strengthen the bond with your fur baby and enjoy a lifetime of love and companionship. ๐พ๐ค #PetLove #BestFriendsForever
It's important to note that the decision to spay or neuter should be made in consultation with your veterinarian, taking into consideration factors such as the age, breed, and health of your pet. While there may be some initial costs associated with the procedures, the long-term benefits in terms of both the health and well-being of your pet, as well as the broader pet population, make spaying and neutering a responsible choice for many pet owners. ๐ ๐

๐ซ Protecting our Paw Pals: Pet Poison Prevention ๐ซ Did you know that some everyday items around our homes can be harmful to our beloved pets? Here are some essential tips to keep them safe:
Secure Your Space: ๐ Pet-proof your home by securing cabinets with cleaning supplies, medications, and any potential hazards. Prevention starts with a pet-safe environment!
Know Your Plants: ๐ฑ Be aware of the plants in and around your home. Some are not pet-friendly and can pose a risk if ingested. Opt for pet-safe greenery to brighten up your space.
Watch the Human Treats: ๐ซ Certain human foods like chocolate, grapes, and xylitol can be toxic to pets. Keep these goodies out of reach and resist those puppy-dog eyes at the dinner table!
Read Labels: ๐งด Always read labels on household products. If a label says 'keep out of reach of children,' it's likely not pet-friendly either. Store them securely!
Emergency Contacts: ๐ Keep #VCMC contact info handy: 973-887-0522 and note the number for a 24/7 animal poison control hotline ๐ 855-764-7661. Quick action is crucial in case of accidental ingestion!

#VCMC is now carrying Combo Vaccines to protect your pet better!
The Vaccine Combos include:
โ
Lyme/Lepto combo vaccine
โ
Distemper/Lyme/Lepto combo vaccine
โก๏ธ IMPORTANT:
A Combo Vaccine offers less chance for a vaccine reaction than if administered separately. This is because combo vaccines have fewer extraneous proteins per antigen basis, and 90% of adverse vaccine reactions are to the extraneous proteins in the vaccine. Administering Lyme and Lepto separately has more of a chance of having an adverse reaction than administering the Lyme/Lepto combo vaccine in 90% of dogs.
These combos are especially helpful for
๐ถ Patients who don't like getting shots
๐ถ Our fear-free patients because they get more protection in fewer pokes

Dr. Passione Spotlight
Veterinary Spotlight with Dr. Kaylene Passione. We interviewed Dr. Passione and wanted to share her story with you.
Why did you decide to become a veterinarian?
I've always loved animals but developed an interest in anatomy and medicine through my AP Biology class in high school. I started shadowing and working in a veterinary hospital during college and knew veterinary medicine was the right path for me.
What was your favorite part of Veterinary School?
My favorite part about vet school was the third and fourth years when we started to apply all that we'd learned in lectures in a more clinical setting. Performing surgery for the first time, monitoring anesthesia, and seeing patients at the small animal clinic was all nerve-racking. Still, working toward becoming a doctor with all my classmates was so exciting.
What are some of your favorite parts of your day at VCMC, or what do you enjoy doing the most?
My surgery days are my favorite days at VCMC! I love working with my patients throughout the day, from preoperative exams to surgery, then recovery. I also have a great team of technicians that I work with that help make the day go smoothly.
Are there any new skills that you are practicing or learning?
Every day I learn something new! Something I've been focusing on recently is evaluating dental radiographs and performing dental extractions. I've also been working on my ultrasonography skills.
How do you like to spend your free time, hobbies, and pets?
In my free time, I love to cook and bake. Recently I've been trying my hand at making fruit tarts, but brownies and cookies are my favorites to bake. I also love reading, hiking, and spending time with my friends, family, and cat Tipsy.
You may recognize Dr. Passione, as she worked at VCMC as an assistant before attending vet school. Dr. passion's special interests include dermatology and emergency medicine.
