Foxtails: They Might Look Fuzzy, But They're a Big Ouch for Our Canine Companions!

We want to keep your furry friends safe and healthy this summer! ๐Ÿ˜Ž That means being aware of foxtails, those pesky barbed seeds found in some grasses.

These little barbs can burrow into your dog's skin, ears, nose, or even get inhaled, causing a whole lot of trouble:
๐Ÿ˜ž Pain & irritation
๐Ÿ˜ž Infection
๐Ÿ˜ž Abscesses
๐Ÿ˜ž Respiratory problems (if inhaled)

How to protect your pup:
๐Ÿ˜€ Know your enemy! Familiarize yourself with foxtails common in our area.
๐Ÿ˜€ Keep your walks clear! Avoid areas with overgrown grass or known foxtail presence.
๐Ÿ˜€ Post-walk patrol! After walks, thoroughly check your dog's fur, especially between toes, ears, and around the face.
๐Ÿ˜€ Short fur, less worry! Consider keeping your dog's fur trimmed during foxtail season.

If you suspect a foxtail issue, don't hesitate to call us! ๐Ÿ“ž 973-887-0522. Early detection and removal are key to preventing complications.

Beach day with your pup? ๐Ÿ–๏ธ

Pick a dog-friendly beach! Not all beaches allow furry friends. Do a quick search online to find the pawfect spot.

๐Ÿ’ง Hydration is key! Pack plenty of fresh water and a travel bowl. Avoid letting them drink saltwater, it can upset their tummy.

๐Ÿ˜Ž Sun safety matters! Apply dog-friendly sunscreen to their nose, ears, and any areas with less fur.

โ›ฑ๏ธ Shade seekers! Bring an umbrella or pop-up tent for your pup to cool down and relax.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Hot sand can burn! Consider booties for their paws, especially during peak sun hours.

๐Ÿ‘™ Beachy keen for a swim? Not all dogs are natural swimmers. Use a life vest and keep an eye on them in the water.

๐Ÿคข Salty snacks? Sand and salt water can irritate their stomachs. Keep an eye out and offer healthy treats instead.

๐Ÿ’ฆ Clean pup, happy pup! Rinse off sand and salt water with clean water before heading home.

๐Ÿ’ฉ Be a pawesome p**p scooper! Always clean up after your dog to keep the beach enjoyable for everyone.

Bonus tip: Pack some fun dog toys for fetching and splashing!

Clawing Up the Walls? Help Your Cat Find Their Scratching Groove!

Scratching is a natural feline behavior, but it can wreak havoc on your furniture. We can help!

Why Do Cats Scratch?

๐Ÿˆโ€โฌ› Sharpening Claws: Scratching helps cats keep their claws healthy and groomed.
๐Ÿˆโ€โฌ› Marking Territory: Scratching posts and furniture with scent glands in their paws helps cats mark their territory.
๐Ÿˆโ€โฌ› Stretching & Exercise: Scratching is a great way for cats to stretch their bodies and release energy.

Help Your Cat Scratch the Right Way:

๐Ÿ˜ธ Provide multiple scratching posts: Choose posts made of sisal or cardboard, materials cats naturally love to scratch. Offer different heights and textures to cater to your cat's preference.
๐Ÿ˜ธ Place scratching posts strategically: Put them near your cat's favorite napping spots and high-traffic areas.
๐Ÿ˜ธ Make scratching posts fun! Attach toys or sprinkle catnip on the posts to entice your feline friend.
๐Ÿ˜ธ Discourage scratching on furniture: Cover furniture with double-sided tape (sticky side out) or aluminum foil, which cats dislike the feel of.

Still having trouble? Schedule an appointment with VCMC! We can help you identify the underlying cause of your cat's scratching behavior and develop a personalized plan to address it. ๐Ÿ“ž (973) 887-0522

She's currently creating a magical fairy village in her garden! โ€๐Ÿงš

Beat the Heat! Keep Your Pets Safe from Heatstroke this Summer ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Both dogs and cats can suffer from heatstroke, a serious condition that occurs when their body temperature rises too high. Unlike humans, pets can't sweat effectively to cool down, putting them at greater risk.

Signs of Heatstroke:
๐Ÿ”ฅ Excessive panting and drooling
๐Ÿ”ฅ Lethargy or weakness
๐Ÿ”ฅ Vomiting or diarrhea
๐Ÿ”ฅ Bright red or pale gums
๐Ÿ”ฅ Difficulty breathing
๐Ÿ”ฅ Seizures or coma (in severe cases)

Prevention Tips:
โŒ Never leave your pet in a hot car, even for a short time.
๐Ÿฆฎ Limit walks and exercise during the hottest part of the day.
๐Ÿ’ฆ Provide plenty of fresh water and encourage your pet to drink.
โ›ฑ๏ธ Offer shady areas for your pet to rest outdoors.
๐Ÿ’ง Consider using a cooling vest or mat for extra comfort.

If you suspect your pet is overheating, take immediate action:
๐Ÿถ Move them to a cool, shaded area.
๐Ÿถ Offer cool water to drink (not ice cold).
๐Ÿถ Wet down their fur with cool water (avoid soaking).
๐Ÿถ Seek immediate veterinary attention!

By following these tips, you can help your pet stay safe and cool this summer!

Taking your pup on a pawsome camping adventure?

The Veterinary Center of Morris County wants to help ensure your furry friend has a safe and fun time in the great outdoors! Here are some tips:

๐Ÿ•๏ธ Leash laws still apply! Even in remote areas, leash laws may be in place. Be sure to check regulations before you go.
๐Ÿ•๏ธ ID your dog. Make sure your pup has a collar with a current ID tag and consider microchipping for extra peace of mind.
๐Ÿ•๏ธ Pack plenty of water and dog-friendly food. Fresh water is essential, especially on hot days.
๐Ÿ•๏ธ Beware of the heat! Limit strenuous activity during the hottest parts of the day and provide shade for your pup to rest in.
๐Ÿ•๏ธ Check for ticks and fleas. These pests are more common in wooded areas. Talk to us about preventative measures.
๐Ÿ•๏ธ Keep a first-aid kit on hand. Be prepared for minor scrapes, cuts, or insect bites.

โœ”๏ธ Bonus tip: Bring along a collapsible water bowl and a portable waste disposal kit to be a responsible camper!

Most importantly, have fun and make memories with your furry best friend! ๐Ÿถ

๐Ÿ“ž Contact Us (973) 887-0522 & Schedule a pre-camping check-up to ensure your dog is healthy and ready for adventure.

It's National Pet Hydration Awareness Month! ๐Ÿ’ง

Here at the Veterinary Center of Morris County, we want to remind all our pet parents about the importance of keeping your furry friends hydrated this summer! ๐ŸŒž

Dehydration can be a serious health risk for pets, especially during hot weather. Here are some tips to keep your pet drinking throughout the day:

๐Ÿ’ง Fresh, Cool Water: Make sure your pet always has access to clean, cool water. Refill their bowl throughout the day and consider adding ice cubes for an extra refreshing treat!
๐Ÿ’ง Multiple Bowls: Place water bowls in different areas of your house, especially where your pet spends most of their time.
๐Ÿ’ง Fountain Fun: Some pets prefer the sound and movement of a water fountain, which can encourage them to drink more.
๐Ÿ’ง Flavor Boost (for cats): Add a splash of tuna juice or low-sodium chicken broth to your cat's water bowl (Check with us on this one first).
๐Ÿ’ง Post-Exercise Hydration: After playtime or walks, provide fresh water immediately to replenish lost fluids.

Remember:
โœ… Monitor your pet's water intake. If you notice a decrease, consult your veterinarian.
โœ… Signs of dehydration include lethargy, dry gums, and sunken eyes.

We want your pets to stay happy and healthy all summer long!

โš ๏ธ Blue-green algae alert! โš ๏ธ

Be aware of the dangers of blue-green algae blooms in lakes, ponds, and even some slow-moving streams. With the recent heat waves, blue-green algae blooms are at a high right now.

What is it? Blue-green algae (also called cyanobacteria) can form harmful blooms that produce toxins.

What's the danger? These toxins can cause serious illness or even death in pets if ingested.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Signs to watch for:
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Drooling
Weakness or staggering
Difficulty breathing
Seizures

๐Ÿถ Keep your pup safe:
Avoid letting your dog drink from or swim in water with visible algae blooms (it often looks like pea soup or scum).
Rinse your dog thoroughly with clean water after swimming in any body of water, just to be safe.

๐Ÿ“ž Call us immediately, (973) 887-0522, if you notice any signs of illness after exposure to algae.

โš ๏ธ Early action is crucial!
