Family business: Sylvacurl founders Jim and Mary-Ellen Lovinsky.

Driven by concern for the environment and a shrinking market for timber from the Northern Forests, Jim and Mary-Ellen began making wood curl shavings as an alternative to petroleum-based packaging materials back in the nineties. They had help from partners and family but have continued the business solo for the last 20 years or so while working full time+ in other careers.

Rarely in the spotlight, but pictured here harvesting garlic for their other business (organic seed garlic, highland cattle, goats, you name it!)

Jim retired this year from his role as the Executive Director of the Lamoille Housing Partnership and Mary-Ellen is a retired reading specialist among all of their other numerous endeavors on their farm.

A “Birdy Buffet” packaged in Sylvacurl is a great idea for all your Bird friends.

They are using narrow curls around the delicate wreath in the smaller package for retail and then wide curls to ship inside a larger box.

We don’t talk about our Fine Cut Narrow Curls as much as the wider packing curls!

They are about 1/4” wide and are more ribbon like curls that fit tighter together. Some customers prefer these for gift basket or box filler because they are a bit more delicate looking.

It's hard to get an idea of the size of the trees and what they look like so here it is!🌳These are mature Aspen trees nearing the end of their lifetime (about 30-40 years) and you can see in the video that one has fallen and started to decompose. 🌳By using mature Aspen trees we are creating a market for a type of wood that doesn't have a lot of uses and is often just left to rot like this one.
