Goals when exposing your pup to new things, stay under threshold. If your pup is hyper focused and does not respond to you, or take food, create space asap. You don’t want to overwhelm your pup, and want to make new experiences positive. Whether it’s treats, toys or verbal praise, you’re always trying to build positive associations in potentially stressful or reactive situations. And if they get overwhelmed, simply create space until they start responding to you once again. Often times, little dogs get a pass on manners. Lilly’s owner was looking to get a little focus from her and stopping her from lunging at cars. First step, move from retractable leash to fixed leash. This sets Lilly up with natural boundary and makes it safer to walk in her busy condo complex. Next step, focus as well as impulse control. Once you are able to get your dog’s focus, then you can put in the work for a safe and happy dog and a safe and happy walk.
