Yearly HCM scans are NUMBER ONE priority with Sphynx breed starting at the age of one year old. You can find HCM clinics all over the states or have them done by a cardiologist.

Sphynx with or without gene end up with HCM. My goal as a preservation breeder is to ensure the best possible outcome for this breed.

All my Sphynx (breeder and spay/neutered pets) are scanned yearly to ensure my pets health along with routine physicals, vaccines and PCR testing.

Keeping up with your pet’s health is the best outcome to find any issues they may arise.

SPHYNX HEART STUDY RELEASED:
The study results are very devastating, however they really should come as no surprise as there are so many Sphynx diagnosed with heart disease. While this took place in New Zealand- NZ Sphynx are from all over the world and it likely is representative of all areas as we really are international community now.

I am so thankful to Dr Joon Seo, the breeders and pet owners who took the time to participate in this study. While this study is depressing, breeders can take further actions to mitigate it. Maybe some scientists will take pity on us and find actual DNA HCM mutations. Dobermans have 4 heart mutations identified now. We are now back to square one and have zero.

STUDY HIGHLIGHTS (Per Dr Joon Seo):
1) ALMS1 gene (“Sphynx HCM DNA Test”)
This gene is not associated with HCM in Sphynx cats. This result mirrors the findings of a recent study in the Europe and USA.
This means that we do not need to run this genetic test in breeding Sphynx cats anymore.

2) 40% of Sphynx at 5.8 years old had HCM.

3) HCM appears to progress quickly in Sphynx cats and unfortunately affected cats died earlier than affected cats of other breeds.The cause of the earlier death in Sphynx cats with HCM appears to be due to their increased risk of myocardial infarction (heart attack).

STEPS TO MITIGATE

{this is my opinion and not from the study}

1) Use older males that are scanned normal and have low production of HCM.

2) Outcross outside the breed-to permissible breeds or non-pedigreed that have lower rates of HCM. Perhaps expand the permissible outcross breeds. (This is not to be conflated with mixing structural mutations, those are mixed breeds with the health issues stacked)

3) Breeding cats should be scanned yearly. Sphynx cats that are pets should be scanned at 1,4,6,8. Pet owners should be informing breeders of the results with the reports. Interim years, pet owners should get the IDEXX ProBNP Cardio Snap test.

If all Sphynx related to those with HCM are altered, the breed would not exist. Strategic decisions have to be made. This means maybe taking a higher risk cat and breeding it to older male. Or outcrossing.

4) Work as a community. Help other preservation breeders who have been hit with HCM. At this rate, it is impossible to avoid this disease. If someone is scanning and trying their best, they need help when their cats get HCM. Not to be badmouthed which has too common in the past. This can mean offering a cat for no cost up front and asking for cat back, offering older male for use.

5) Inform pet buyers of the reality so their expectations are not unreasonable. Ensure they get pet insurance. Educate pet owners about the dangers of Sphynx obesity and how it can affect the heart. Also, inform pet buyers about thr new medication, “rapamycin” that can be used on cats with HCM.
