Why do we foster? For a lot of reasons. Is it easy? Not always. Sometimes the dogs are really fearful and not always fun. Sometimes they're not housebroken or they're in heat or have other medical issues. Sometimes dogs that are at end-of-life need fospice care.

When you register, please send your deposit and driver's license promptly. These are required to confirm the appointment. Demand it high. Your request can only be held 48 hours, then will be declined if this information is not received. There are lots of cats trying to get scheduled for this SNIP.

Angela Shook

Angela Shook is an end-of-life doula, Companion animal doula and the Past President of the National End-of-Life-Doula Alliance (NEDA). She served on The NEDA board from 2018 to 2022 and has earned the NEDA Proficiency Badge. She is an instructor of the University of Vermont End-of-Life Doula and Companion Animal Certificate Programs. She is employed as a veterinary doula with Pet Well Mobile Vet where she assists with euthanasia and the end-of-life care and support of companion animals. Angela also serves on the board for the Charlevoix Area Humane Society and volunteers with the Elk Country Animal Shelter. She is a level II Reiki Practitioner and has completed the Animal Reiki course through the Animal Hospice Group. She has received the Animal Hospice Advocate certificate from the International Association for Animal Hospice and Palliative Care and is a certified Pet Loss Grief Specialist through the Association of Pet Loss and Bereavement. The owner of Dragonfly End-of-Life Services, LLC, her offerings include advance care planning, customized vigils and rituals, and legacy projects. She is the co-author of “The Doula Tool Kit: The Complete Practical Guide for End-of-Life Doulas & Caregivers”.

Angela's lecture: The Role of a Companion Animal EOL Doula will educate veterinary professionals on the scope of practice and the emerging role of a companion animal doula. Attendees will learn how a doula can support clients and patients at end-of-life; as well as illustrate how working with a doula can enhance and elevate the current services provided within veterinary practices. Through defining this role and sharing of actual cases, veterinary professionals will learn the benefits of this emerging profession and see the value of working in collaboration to provide the best possible death experience for beloved companion animals.

*Even with the windows down, the inside of a car can heat up to 120°

Panting in cats is not normal. If your cat is panting, get them inside to a cool place immediately and call a veterinarian.

This is valuable information from Pam Johnson-Bennett of Cat Behavior Associates. If you see a cat panting, please attend to it right away as it may be in distress and critically ill or injured. Please get the animal help as quickly as possible!

We've had the displeasure of witnessing several panting cats in our time. One we'll never forget is a kitten that had been kicked, resulting in a broken spine. He had been panting before the vet humanely ended his suffering. Even though there were no outward signs of injury -- and it was not a hot day -- this kitten's panting told us that something was critically wrong. In our experience, more often than not, a panting cat is in need of immediate medical attention.🩺

Feline Fact Friday, thanks to Stray Cat Project ...

🐾🐱 Wondering where the pregnant cat you've been feeding is hiding her kittens? Here's a clue! 🕵️‍♀️

A queen (mother cat) will typically keep her nest close to her feeder but out of the way of predators and humans. She's going to look for a low-traffic area that is hidden, protected, dark, and dry. In our suburban environment, we'll search 2-3 houses in each direction of the feeder for the nest, with preference given to homes without active children or dogs. Good places to search are in and under sheds, under decks, in thick vegetation, and in hollowed trees. 🌳 The queen chooses her nest to keep the kittens very well hidden and protected yet close enough to get to the feeder -- on whom she depends on - quickly.

It's important that you not disturb the nest once you find it. If the queen realizes that you've found it, she'll immediately move the kittens. It's imperative for you to keep an eye on the nest from a distance as you'll want to get those kittens to rescue once they're ready to eat on their own (usually 5-6 weeks of age).🏡👀 Also, inform the homeowner, if applicable, of the existence of the nest so they do not disturb it. Once the kittens start to walk (like our little one below), they'll follow mom to the feeding station -- which is also when they tend to get lost. If the kitten is showing an interest in food, it's old enough to be transferred to rescue.

Of course, do NOT forget to TNR mom to prevent future litters!

Lyme Vaccine is recommended for all dogs that spend time outside in grass, woods, or brush.

Flea/Tick Prevention should also be given year round to kill parasites before they can transmit diseases like Lyme Disease.

More cases of Lyme disease are being reported across Michigan. Lyme disease is spread by the bite of an infected blacklegged tick (also known as a deer tick). Stay safe in your surroundings by staying on well-groomed trails and avoiding high grass, brush and fallen leaves. Find more tips for environmental health at Michigan.gov/EnviroHealth.

Surgeon said everything went well with surgery. We're on our way home to rest. I'll have a few months of PT. If all goes well, I should be able to see wellness appointments after the recheck in May.
