Although Aspen is no longer with us, we still think she deserves to be celebrated! This beautiful girl lived 8 wonderful years with her owner, one of our PCAs, Lorna. She was a German Shepherd and Border Collie Mix who had the s***k of both breeds!
Aspen, like all dogs with sophisticated tastebuds, loved pizza crust. Thin crust, stuffed crust, deep dish crust, who is a dog to turn down any type of pizza crust?
Opening her monthly bark box was her favorite activity that she waited patiently for. Maybe you guessed by her name, but this pretty girl was adopted by Lorna from a shelter in Colorado.

Wesley James (aka "Wes") is as dapper as they come! Wes belongs to one of our technicians, Sam.

This handsome boy is a 4 year old Labrador Retriever Mix who you can find playing with his human toddler companion. He loves to munch on cheese sticks (who doesn't?). He may be a canine, but Wes believes he is part deer as he is a great jumper. He can leap about anything you can put in front of him, including the fence at his house!

Hi Guys! Dr Hook here. As promised - as a salute to the 12 Days of Christmas, here are 12 top tips I want all dog parents to know:

1 – Most dogs are overweight. You should be able to lightly run your hands down their side and easily feel their ribs. Thin dogs live longer, typically have less other health issues, and need less medication over their lifespan.
2 – Most dogs have dental disease. We recommend brushing with Dechra toothpaste, or wiping their teeth with VetraDent wipes as much as possible, and giving an assortment of VOHC approved chew treats. No real bones, or antlers. Check out VOHC.org for a huge list of great options.
3 – Walk them often! For steps, but also for sniffs. They literally need to stop and smell the roses. Their noses are 50 times stronger than ours, and sniffing public areas are how they scroll their social media. We have Instagram and TikToks – they have blades of grass and fire hydrants! 😊
4 – They need to exercise their brains. You can Google “Canine Enrichment”, and/or check out toys, snuffle mats, puzzle feeders, etc. in stores or online. They’re so good for their brains – young and old – and fun to watch as they figure things out.
5 – Grain-Free diets, esp “boutique” brands that are based on peas, other legumes, and sweet potatoes, can cause heart issues like Dilated Cardiomyopathy. They are usually deficient in Taurine, which is very important for heart health. Look for rice, barley, oats, etc… Dogs are omnivores. They need grains.
6 – People food is OK. Gasp! It really is. The key is lean, low salt, low fat, and in moderation. Feeding your dog M&M sized bites of chicken breast and string cheese are OK. Low fat Greek yogurt, green beans, cucumbers, and unsweetened applesauce are pretty yummy. You have to count all that as extra calories tho. If your dog is already a little chunky (See #1) then really, REALLY limit snacks and treats.
7 – Dogs naturally don’t like to be restrained/hugged, and don’t like their nails trimmed. It is so important to train your dog to be OK with these things, as they are needed for nail trims and vet visits. Very brief restraint, then a snack and a “Good Dog!” to start, and work your way up. Use nail trimmers to cut spaghetti noodles next to their feet so they get used to the sound. Time invested in training will absolutely pay you back.
8 – They need heartworm, flea, and tick preventative year-round. We’ve all seen random mosquitos around during the winter, inside and outside, and intestinal parasites are always a threat. We’ve had weird warm winters, and take pets on vacations, etc… just keep them on it for full protection.
9 – They need to be OK in kennels. Kenneling is a fact of life. Boarding, grooming, traveling, hospital stays, etc. There are great training tips online, videos on YouTube, and behaviorists, and trainers are always willing to help give tips.
10 – Doggy daycare is OK, but not every day. Dogs need exercise and socialization, but they also need to rest. Typically, between 10am and 3 pm is nap time for them, which is nice bc that’s often when we’re at work. Daycare is sometimes just too much excitement and not enough rest. They need their downtime for mental health. So yes to play dates, but also yes to quiet time.
11 – Be careful with dog parks. Many people don’t understand doggy body language and their dog may not be suitable for yours, potentially harming your dog. If you decide to take your dog, learn about body language and proper play behavior, so you can protect your dog and be their advocate to make sure they’re not being bullied (nor being the bully).
12 – You should vaccinate for more than Distemper and Rabies. Leptospirosis is a bacteria that is fatal to dogs, that CAN be passed to humans, and Lyme disease causes symptoms that range from pain and fever, to kidney failure. Bordetella is an extremely contagious cause of kennel cough. Vaccinate for those to keep them fully protected.

Milo is here to introduce himself and his enthusiasm for life.

Milo is a 10 year old pug who's human he tolerates is our office manager Marshall. "Pug" and "Pig" are used interchangeably at his household as anything lying around from popcorn, to hot dogs, to crayons, is a delicacy. Favorite activity? I think his picture says it all. Moving is just too much of a hassle most days. Milo has one more braincell than he does eyes and those two braincells are responsible for two things only: food and love. Keep on keeping on Milo. Life is ruff out there.

The Yorkshire Terrier is one of the most popular small dog breeds. Whether they're sporting their long, flowing coat or a cute puppy cut, these dogs are adorable either way! Their name comes from their origin in Yorkshire, England. These little dogs may look sweet and cuddly, but they are true to their terrier nature and were originally bred to catch rats in clothing mills. They may be small, but did you know that one of the most famous dogs of WWII was a yorkie named Smoky?! He is ran a telegraph wire through a 70 foot pipe 8 inches in diameter and is credited with saving many troops lives by alerting them to the approaching enemy!

Hi Guys! Dr Hook here. Hoping everyone is staying warm and safe, and enjoying this Holiday season. In the spirit of "12 Days of Christmas" here are 12 bits of info I want all cat owners to know. I plan on sending along 12 Dog Tips next week!

1-Most cats are overweight, which can lead to skin infections, diabetes and arthritis. Limiting food, especially dry, almost always has to be done. Who can stay skinny at an all-you-can-eat buffet every day?
2 – Even indoor only cats need yearly exams and vaccines. (It’s really like us going to our doctors only every 7 years) We want to make sure they’re healthy, and catch any illnesses early on.
3 – Even indoor only cats need flea preventatives. Fleas can come in through screen doors and windows, and travel inside from the outdoors on housemate dogs, and even our pants/socks/shoes.
4 – All cats need mental enrichment. Think of the crossword puzzles and Soduko that we do all the time. Keep them physically and mentally active. Google feline enrichment, hunting toys (esp Doc and Phoebe’s), and look at apps you can put on an iPad. Remember – no laser pointers (they’re a frustrating, no-win game of chase).
5 – They like to get vertical. Get a cat tree, and/or other high up places they can perch and rest.
6 – Plants are toxic to them. Most houseplants will cause vomiting and diarrhea, and lilies (outdoor and in our indoor bouquets) cause deadly kidney failure.
7 – Cats should NOT vomit all the time. They are not just “pukers.” They likely have a food intolerance, allergy, problem with their pancreas, or Inflammatory Bowel Disease, amongst other possibilities.
8 – Cats should never get medications made for anything other than a cat. Their metabolisms are so different from humans, dogs, etc. so a safe med for us or the family dog can very likely kill the cat.
9 – Cats should go outside, with supervision, to keep them safe, IF THEY WANT TO. Supervised indoor/outdoor cats are often thinner, happier, and have less behavioral and urinary issues.
10- You shouldn’t declaw your cat. There are many helpful options w training, and alternatives to consider that are safer and not painful.
11 – Some cats just don’t like other cats. Every one is different, of course, but don’t feel the need to get your cat a kitten for company – they may enjoy being the only kiddo in the house.
12- Experts recommend 1 litterbox per cat, plus one. So a 3 cat household needs 4 litterboxes. They should preferably be uncovered, and in different floors and rooms of the house. Avoid laundry rooms because it can be loud and scary for them to potty.
