We decided to host one last event of the year: a Halloween-themed fun show!! An RSVP is required since trailer parking space is limited, but everyone is invited.

If you're not a member of Carroll County or Jefferson County OHC, we ask that you please send vet records of vaccination history and a copy of a recent (within 6 months and NOT from a sale barn) negative Coggins test when you RSVP. This is a smaller facility with an immune-compromised yearling on the premises so biosecurity is important. If you're a member, your horse has been around ours so there's no need for sharing vet records.

Is there anyone in the market for a project horse? This is a mare I sold last year whose owner just hasn't had time for her.

Are there any local youth looking to learn or refine their horsemanship skills? Here's a great opportunity offered by the Carroll County Ohio Horseman's Council.

The meetings will be held at Hollywood Acres.

This survey is to gauge interest in starting a youth program though the Carroll County Chapter of the Ohio Horseman's Council. As long as we get at least 3 youth who are interested by January 1, 2023, we will begin this program in the spring of 2023. This would be a program for all experience levels...

Romeo is officially looking for a new home!

Romeo is a 14.3hh 14 year old blue roan grade quarter horse gelding. His sire is registered AQHA (https://www.allbreedpedigree.com/blue+moon+a+risen) but his dam was grade. He's smart and willing and such a fun horse to ride!

At this point in his training, a confident beginner (or anyone with a trainer) would get along with him in the arena and an intermediate rider would be best for trail riding. I've ridden him both Western and English and think he'd make a phenomenal 4H horse.

He is up to date on vaccinations, deworming, and hoof trims. Many more pictures and videos of his progress are posted on this page (Hollywood Acres).

SOLD!

Another great ride on Romeo today! Today was the first ride I didn't bothering lunging him (or doing any groundwork with him) before the ride and he did just fine.

He's in the stage of training where he's making gradual improvements so it's nothing exciting to talk about but I'm really proud of how well he's doing!

06/03/2022

Romeo got the day off yesterday and today we picked up on groundwork, specifically trying to teach him how to canter in a circle. I'm not sure he's ever been asked to properly carry himself while cantering. He's got a heck of a lead change (1st video), he's just still figuring out what lead he should be on but the only way to learn is to practice and build the muscle required! He hasn't done this much so I'm proud of his progress so far!

Quiz yourself with the 2nd and 3rd slow motion videos: which video is he on the correct lead? And which one is he not?

Tried Romeo English tonight and he blew me away! He listened really well and it took some leg but he found this really nice, almost collected trot. I think Romeo's saying he would love to be a 4H horse!

We took Romeo on his first trail ride in a while. He did great for the first 40 minutes or so; he led fearlessly and crossed everything with ease. But then he decided he was just done with the whole trail riding thing.

But he did he load right on the trailer and back off without an issue both to go there and come back.

I personally believe he would be happiest as an arena horse due to this. He'd do great as a 4H horse or an obstacle course horse for just about anyone! There's no reason an experienced rider couldn't trail ride him but I wouldn't be comfortable putting a beginner on him and sending them down the trail anytime soon. And I just think he'd be happier in an arena.

So if you're looking for a gorgeous blue roan gelding for 4H or you're looking for an obstacle course partner, Romeo's your boy! He's so sweet and he wants to learn.

I'm debating offering him much sooner than planned because he's doing so well in the arena already. If you think you may be interested in Romeo as an arena horse feel free to PM us any questions you may have about him. If his owner's ok with it, I may start showing him to prospective homes this week.

Romeo's 5th ride. He's doing so well!

Really starting to get a handle on him and he's nice and soft in the mouth. He just had to unlearn all his previous "training" and now he's making exceptional progress! And the most important thing to me is how relaxed he is now.

Third ride on Romeo! He's doing so well; nice and willing and starting to get the hang of things. We even worked on yielding his hindquarters and forequarters a bit and he picked up on that pretty quickly.

At this point, I'd be comfortable putting just about anyone on him in the arena walk/trot. He's really thriving with consistency and a little patience!

Romeo had his first ride with me with a bit and trotting today! Somehow we squeezed a ride in my sloppy arena in between rain storms today.

He really doesn't know much but he's consistently quiet and calm so the learning will come quickly and easily. He's happy to just mosey along but he'll pick up both a nice big trot and a cute little jog without a whole lot of effort too. He just needs taught the difference between the two instead of switching back and forth lol

But, I'm really proud of how well he's doing. He still has a LOT to learn but he's a quick learner and I'd have felt comfortable taking him down a trail today if I would have needed to.

He's going to make someone a heck of a horse in a few more weeks! He absolutely LOVES human attention and deserves his own person to shower him with all the love and affection :)

05/27/2022

Just 2 more weeks until I'm done with the whole pesky "job" thing for the summer! (Just kidding, I absolutely love my day job and my students!) Until then, I'm thankful for arena lights and quiet horses who don't mind working after dark with all the critters stirring and shadows everywhere.

More great groundwork lessons today (one on my lunch break and one at 9pm) and hoping the weather cooperates for his first "real" ride back after his time off tomorrow! I'm excited to see how well everything's going to come together for him!

It's hard to get good action pictures in the dark so here's a short video of his gorgeous trot to fulfill your daily Romeo fix :)

Line driving Romeo! He did great with walking, turning, and trotting after just a couple minutes. Whoa and back took a little more time and patience but he's definitely a smart boy and a quick learner!

He also got a bath today and got his hair braided to help get it under control a little bit.

05/25/2022

Romeo made so much progress today! I'm a firm believer in short, frequent lessons and everything really seems to be clicking for Romeo!

Our first session of the day included saddling, leading him saddled, "lunging" on the lead rope, standing at the mounting block, and getting a little weight on his back. He did amazing and took everything in stride!

Our second session included actual lunging walk, trot, and canter. To my knowledge, Romeo never was asked to canter in a circle and the poor boy (he's 14, mind you) couldn't figure out what to do with his feet. He stayed calm and figured it out eventually though. We did a little more work at the mounting block after taking a break.

And he told me he was ready so I went ahead and climbed on. We just walked but he did really well. He knows absolutely nothing training-wise but he carried my weight well and stayed calm. He tensed up twice but I gave him a bit and he calmed himself down quickly and we went on without an issue.

Romeo's 4th groundwork lesson!

It just so happened to be after dark and I'm so proud of how well he didn't get distracted by his shadow and how much he's progressing!

I think tomorrow I might see if I can get a saddle to fit him and do a couple days of groundwork saddled to get him used to that feeling again. He is so incredibly smart and motivated by praise and human affection!

Here are some videos of Romeo's 3rd groundwork session!

Nothing exciting unless you are looking for the same things that I look for and then this is an extremely exciting lesson!

He's getting even more relaxed and focused (despite there being mares in the pasture to distract him) and making huge strides with sending and backing.

He didn't try pushing his shoulder into me at all when we switched directions and he was willing, soft, and responsive. I gave him plenty of breaks to stop and think about it and with the exception of one time, he stayed focused on me (you can see me jiggle the rope to get his attention back on me).

He's still resistant about moving his forequarters but he tries. I reward the smallest try and don't get after him when he walks out of it. Once he gets better, I'll slowly start getting more and more picky about him just taking one step to the side and stopping but he's at the point where he still needs rewarded for the smallest try until he gets the idea a little better.

Here's his report card so far:
Sending: 85%
Stopping: 90% (he doesn't stop how I train a horse to stop but clearly someone has lunged him a good bit in his past and he already knows the "jiggle the lead rope" cue to stop so I'm just going with that for him)
Yielding hindquarters: 90%
Yielding forequarters: 55%
General ground manners: 80%
Being adorable: 100%

Romeo did absolutely amazing during his second groundwork session! Notice how much more relaxed he is today too? He's definitely a thinker because we picked up ahead of where we left off last night. We're still working on yielding his forequarters and sending and we started on backing. I expect another week or two of groundwork and he'll be ready to start saddling and riding!

And hopefully he builds up some topline in that time so it's easier to fit a saddle to him when the time comes. I cannot stress enough how important proper saddle fit is! I won't put a saddle on a horse unless it fits absolutely perfectly so fingers crossed my pastures, combined with switching him to Purina feed (Purina doesn't pay me to promote their feeds but I love how well horses do on them so much) will get muscle built up in all the right places by time he's ready for a saddle.

For those of you following Romeo's progress:

I bathed him today and he did fantastic; no work needed there!

We also did our first groundwork session tonight. I focused on yielding his hindquarters and his forequarters and sending. He was super willing moving his hindquarters! But sending and moving his forequarters was another story! He's learned to bulldoze people using his shoulders and that makes him resistant to moving them away when asked. Just like any negative behavior that's been inadvertantly reinforced, it just takes some time to convince him that's not an acceptable behavior and it won't get him what he wants. Working on moving his forequarters away from pressure instead of into it will help give him something to do, which is much easier for a horse (or a dog or a kid for that matter) instead of just telling him to not do something.

He was easily distracted but could be my fault for leaving him stalled longer today than I typically like to stall a horse and this was the first time he saw my arena. It also seems like he was over-desensitized at some point in his life. So many people do a ton of desensitization without any sensitization (or do it in a way that's counter-productive) and that sets a horse up to become pushy and dull.

Luckily all of these are simple things to fix but they would definitely explain why his current owner was having difficulty with him.

We made progress for sure and he's definitely teachable! He wants to be a good boy but he's learned it's easier to not. He doesn't put up too big of a fuss about anything and is extremely sensible. He's gonna be a completely different horse in 30 days and I'm excited to work with him!

Well, hello, Mr. Tall Dark and Handsome!! 😍😍

Romeo just arrived at Hollywood Acres for a refresher course before finding him a new, loving home. He's a 14 year old grade quarter horse gelding who was ridden when he was younger but mostly has just been a pet for the last 7 years. He's a sweet horse who just hasn't been asked to mind his manners or work for almost half his life. With some consistency, I imagine he'll be someone's best friend and once-in-a-lifetime horse!

Stay tuned for updates on his progress! I expect to be listing him in 30-60 days, depending on his progress.

05/20/2022

You may have noticed that this page has been relatively inactive for a while.

2020 was a brutal year for me personally. I was fighting to keep my day job due to covid rules and lost two very special older horses.

2021 was mostly comprised of me trying to recover, professionally (I found a different fantastic day job, two actually), emotionally (I got down to just one personal horse and just spent a lot time with him to remind myself why I devote all my time and energy to horses), and financially (selling all but my "heart horse" sure helped reduce the bills and I'm working 2 "real" jobs and as many side hussles as I can).

And this year, I'm finally ready to get back at it! I'll be offering riding lessons weekday evenings starting in June. I have a quiet, safe mare here I can use for confident beginner riding lessons up through advanced horsemanship (both on the ground and in the saddle) lessons. Or I can travel to your barn to work with you and your horse. My focus in all my lessons is on building your relationship with the horse and improving your communication with and understanding of the horse. This may help you show or compete but that is not the focus of my lesson program; I'd be happy to refer you to another trainer better suited for that path if you'd like.

Finally, I have one more exciting announcement to make but feel it merits its own post!

In short, thanks for sticking around for the past couple "off years" and I look forward to connecting with you all this year!

Nokia had her first training session with a surcingle (and I tightened as tight as a saddle would be) and her first time with a bit today.

She took everything in stride so effortlessly.

If you're looking for a horse to start under saddle yourself, she's one of those "born broke" horses that'll make it fun and easy. She'll be a great one for an experienced rider looking to start their own horse for the first time.

Sold!

Diamans Strait Dott, "Nokia," is a 2019 black and white tobiano APHA mare whom I've owned since she was 5 months old.

She is friendly and quiet and knows everything age-appropriate; she leads, loads, ties, lunges, clips, bathes, and stands for the farrier, vet, and for fly spray. Currently, she is 13.3 hands at the withers and 14.3 1/2" at the hip and a stout 900lbs. I expect her to mature to right around 15 hands and 1200lbs but her bloodlines indicate that she won't reach that mature size for another 4-6 years. Nokia is up to date on vaccines, deworming, and hoof care (due for a trim again next week; if she's still here, it will be done) and behaves very well for it all.

If she's sounding too good to be true, she does have 2 health considerations. 1) She is allergic to fly bites; I manage this by providing a fan during the day and keeping her fly sprayed. Her reaction is itchiness, no hives or eye problems; she just gets really itchy. And 2) She has ulcers that are currently being treated. I've been working with Equine Specialty Hospital for treatment and will be happy to provide more information if you are seriously interested. I believe this treatment plan is working because her chronic diarrhea (why I scoped her for ulcers in the first place) has resolved.

She is 7 panel (HYPP, PSSM1, HERDA, GBED, MH, IMM, & LWO) N/N and homozygous for tobiano and exceptionally bred with Double Delta Olena, Gay Bar Olena, Strait From Texas, and QT Poco Streke right on her papers.

Located in East Rochester, Ohio (zip code: 44625, northeast Ohio).

Asking 💰3️⃣5️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ but happy to negotiate in person a good bit to a great home.

PM or text/call 330-323-1705 for more information or to set up a time to come meet Nokia.

Posting for a friend. Located in East Rochester, OH.

Clyde is an approximately 11 year old Haflinger gelding (no papers). He's just over 12 hands but stout enough to carry a heavier rider and big bodied enough to take up a lot of leg for his height.

Clyde was said to be broke to ride and drive when he was younger. Last fall, I line drove him and we rode him 3 times. He line drove great and didn't do anything bad under saddle, he just didn't seem like he knew much and was easily distracted by the other horses in the pasture. His owner hasn't had a chance to work with him since the spring so I would say be ready for a complete restart but with a high likelihood that it'll go smoothly and fairly quickly and easily. His owner just doesn't have the time for a project and Clyde deserves more attention than he's getting. Clyde has a sweet personality and does all the basics you'd expect but will get pushy on the ground if he thinks he can get away with it. He's a project and therefore would do best in an experienced home without children handling him (an experienced and confident teen would probably be ok); he's NOT a pony for your small or inexperienced kids and is not being sold as such.

SOLD!

Call/text 330-323-1705 or PM for more information or to make an appointment to come meet Clyde. Sorry, no videos available.

Update: I added more traditional conformation photos in the comments that I just took this morning.
