2024 By the Numbers
🎉2024 was quite a year for us.🎉We broke our previous records in nearly every pet care program. 😲
Last year there were more...
- Spay/neuters 😻
- Vaccinated pets 🩹
- Medically treated pets 🩺
- Intakes 🐕🦺
- Adoptions 😻
- Pets reunited with their people ❤
- Volunteer and foster hours 🙌
- Pets fed through our pet food pantry/pantry partnerships 🛒
- Partnerships with other rescues in the region 🤝
Here's our ‘2024 By the Numbers’ video. When you see the upward arrow ticker, that means we grew the number of clients and animals helped at our vet clinic, our adoption program, our pet food pantry, our foster program, and more!
This video shows that Gateway Pet Guardians is much more than a rescue, we are the largest affordable Pet Resource Center in the St. Louis metropolitan region! Through every lifesaving program, we go #beyondrescue.
We can’t fulfill our goals and grow our programs without you, our supporters! If you’ve been with us, even for a short while, thank you! And a special ‘thank you’ to our board, staff, volunteers, and donors!
Let’s see what 2025 has to offer!

This week has been nothing short of eventful.
… And not just because of the unpredictable weather.
Our medical suite has been bustling with a range of urgent cases, and we’d like to introduce you to a few of our resilient residents.
Zoi arrived with a traumatic eye injury, which we immediately attended to. In addition, we addressed some underlying dental disease and performed extractions to relieve the discomfort caused by infected teeth.
Charla presented with a severe reproductive infection, and we are closely monitoring her condition to ensure she regains her strength ahead of her scheduled spay surgery.
Marlyn, a gentle soul, came in with a prolapsed anus, likely caused by persistent diarrhea from a severe worm infestation. He also suffered from multiple body wounds. Thankfully, he is now resting and we are hopeful for his recovery in the coming days.
This sweet mama cat and her kittens were brought in from the harsh cold. We ensured they were safely warmed and comfortable, providing them with much needed care and attention.
As you can imagine, these cases accumulate quickly, and the costsof care add up. If you are able, we would be deeply grateful for any donation to help us continue our mission of saving animals in need. We are profoundly thankful for the ongoing support of our compassionate community.

We have the most amazing news to share…
James Earl Bones has been found after a month-long search! As many of you may know, James escaped his foster home, and despite our best efforts to track him down, sightings had become scarce.
But thanks to the incredible workers at Geissler Roofing Co., who spotted James and safely brought him back to us, he’s home at last! You’re grounded, Mister. 🤪
We’re overjoyed to have him back, and we can’t help but admire his courage throughout this ordeal. James faced the elements all alone with determination and spirit. While he’ll need some time to rest and recover (he lost several pounds while on the run), he’s in great shape overall and ready to start a new chapter.
When severe weather hits, it’s all hands on deck for us at GPG! ❄️
We’re reaching out to you, our generous supporters, to help us recoup the approximate $10k+ in resources we’ve used up over the past 3 days alone. We have:
🐾Intaked 17 stray dogs and 5 owner surrendered dogs to save them from the emergent cold
💪🏻Distributed 300 bales of straw
🏠Spent $5,300 on heavy duty igloo doghouses to give away
💃🏻Paid overtime to animal care staff to have them shack up at the shelter overnight last night
It’s times like these when we are extra grateful to our village for lifting us up and keeping us going. Can’t stop, won’t stop! Stay warm, friends.

This story is worth the read, trust us!
A little over two weeks ago our team received a tip about a nursing mama dog roaming around Washington Park. It took us almost 7 days to figure out where she was hiding her 6 pups — turns out it was in the basement of a burnt down, collapsed house.
There was no way we could get to the puppies who were well hidden below a significant amount of debris with tunnels, but we were determined & began trying to trap them. We caught 3 last Friday & NONE since then. 🥺
For the last 4 days, we were only seeing the light tan puppy on camera, convinced something bad happened to the other 2 (or best case scenario, a neighbor snagged them if they followed mom out to the street to search for food). We continued our trapping efforts & yesterday around noon, we trapped the tan puppy — now named Tinsel! 🎄
Certain there weren’t any other puppies to find, we set the trap for mama & planned to leave it set overnight. But while doing that, we heard a puppy crying from a distance. Sure enough, mama came running out of the alley barking, telling us she was still protecting her babies, which meant they were alive! It was nearly dark, so we forged a plan to return in the morning with back up.
In the excitement of locating them, we forgot to close our small trap that was still set. Around 7:30 pm, we got a camera notification & saw that mama was there with her other two puppies that we hadn’t seen on camera in 4 days, with the tan & black puppy (yet to be named) in the trap. We called a Washington Park convenience store owner & police officer to accompany us to the trap.
Keep in mind, to get to the trap, we had to walk 500+ feet into a wooded area with mama normally charging at us, protecting her babies. We got lucky & mom wasn’t there, so we were able to get back to the trapped puppy quickly. As we returned to the collapsed house, we heard leaves rustling & saw the last puppy on top of the collapsed roof trying to scamper away. W

Remember Jack Sparrow, one of the pirate kittens we took in after a Trap Neuter Return (TNR) event last month at Gateway Pet Guardians?🏴☠️
Jack was one lucky kitten. He was trapped right as a severe upper respiratory infection ripped through his cat colony. We decided to intake him and two other kittens due to their age and medical needs. Jack was in the worst shape and needed an infected eye removed right away.
Thanks to your donations and the vet teams quick response, we were able to save Jack Sparrow's life.
Recently, the vet team determined that the URI affected Jack's other eye and it couldn't be saved. We worried about removing both of Jack's eyes even if it was the best treatment for him.
We were thrilled to get videos from Jack's foster the day after his second eye removal surgery showing him playing with his favorite toys, as if he can see. 😻
Cats are so incredibly resilient. The best part is this charming #tuxedocat is now off medical hold and is available for adoption!
Adopt Jack Sparrow today! www.gatewaypets.org/adopt!
And donate to Vet Care for All so we can continue our lifesaving work in the #eastsidepetdistrict
