Cici on a field trip…pure magic!
Cici out on a field trip
“I loved going on a field trip with a GPG dog and I can’t wait for the next one.”
A newbie dog walker heard that Cici was struggling at the shelter. Cici arrived at GPG with a firearm wound to her face last winter and has been in and out of foster homes. Since returning to the shelter, Cici started struggling with kennel stress.
We recently asked folks to take dogs like Cici out on field trips or weekend slumber pawties or provide more enrichment while visiting them at the shelter. Here’s what a ‘new to field trips’ volunteer had to say:
“I took Cici out for an evening field trip for two hours. I grabbed a backpack filled with treats, poop bags, water and we drove to the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, which was only 8 minutes from the Pet Resource Center.
Within minutes of walking, Cici became transfixed with egrets flying over a pond and I became emotional realizing in that moment that she doesn’t get to experience nature like this everyday and, frankly, neither do I!
With that I recognized Cici was a master at being present-relishing each moment, sight & sound, and showing me how to do the same on a gorgeous summer evening.
After playing with frogs at the waters edge, Cici took the lead, guiding us on our field trip.
Walking the paths, Cici greeted everyone with love and curiosity. I can tell Cici will make a great hiking buddy and cuddle buddy.
I am often preoccupied with all my to-dos and Cici showed me how to enjoy the weekend, the sunshine, and just be. I can’t imagine not doing this again!”
There are more GPG dogs like Cici who would benefit from a field trip, weekend slumber pawty, or more enrichment. To sign up to help dogs struggling with kennel stress, please visit https://gatewaypets.org/how-to-help/foster/ or https://gatewaypets.org/how-to-help/volunteer/

We know the @olympics is officially done, but that won’t stop Tucci from showing off his amazing swimming skills! Is he in a kiddie pool with only a few inches of water? Yes. Does that matter? No way! Skills are skills! 🐶🏊🏻♂️Tucci is around one year old, dog + kid friendly, & crate + potty trained. He is the most lovable guy who is more than ready to swim his way into your heart…& possibly a bigger pool. 😂🐾www.gatewaypets.org/adopt🐾GPGTucci #AdoptMe #rescue #rescuedog #rescuedogsofinstagram #adopt #adoptarescue #adoptarescuedog #shelterdog #shelterdogsofinstagram #adoptashelterdog #fosteringsaveslives
Ladybug needs an amputation.
A good samaritan brought Ladybug to us last Friday just as we were closing.
This sweetheart had been roaming the streets with an open wound on her chest and an injured back leg.
Because of her critical condition and because we wanted to make sure Ladybug survived the weekend, we transferred her to an emergency clinic to stabilize her before being seen on Monday.
After an exam and x-rays, Gateway’s Dr. Sarah Frei discovered a bullet had shattered Ladybug’s back leg. The cause of the open wound on her chest was likely from the bullet too. (See photos in comments)
Ladybug’s emergency vet care over the weekend came to $700 and the amputation, which will be performed by us next week, costs $1,000, totaling $1,700.
As you can tell, Ladybug is such a loving dog and she’ll feel so much better after the amputation!
We are raising funds for early giving for Beyond Rescue (our big fundraiser on Aug 15 & 16) so dogs like Ladybug can make a full recovery and find her forever home.
Please donate to help cover Ladybug’s care!

Empress is gaining weight
On Friday staff found one of the skinniest dogs we have ever seen tied to the fence.
While we don’t know what led to her poor condition, we do know that Empress is safe and will receive all the love and care from here on out!
Say hello to this darling girl! So far we learned that Empress is about one year old, good with other dogs, crate trained, very affectionate, and she loves ice cream!
We are going to get this sweet girl healthy so for now she’s on medical hold. We would love to find her a permanent foster home for the future though.
Head to our website and fill out a foster form or send an email to [email protected] if you want to be a foster hero!
