Happy CSA Day! If you're CSA-curious, today's the day to look at some local farm websites and find out if CSA is right for you (check http://www.buylocalglv.org/csa/ for valley-wide info). If you are in Easton, Forks Township, or Bethlehem, consider having us be your farmers this year. We'd love to grow veggies for ya! http://www.hunterhillcsa.com/

And now for our final post on Great Things About CSAs:

#1 Relationships: CSA farmers and members commit to good faith efforts for continuous development of mutual trust and understanding, and to solidarity and responsibility for one another as co-producers. We consult with members, take their preferences into account when deciding what crops to grow, and communicate regularly about the realities of the farm. Farmers and CSA members enter into an awesome, radical, community-building agreement. We are so, SO grateful to have community support in keeping small farms viable in the Lehigh Valley.

This looks like slop, I know, but it tasted so good! Counter-clockwise from top: homemade kimchi w/our napa, carrots, & radish (made late fall); sweet & sour veg w/our eggplant, peppers, and broc (made huge batches in summer to freeze); toasted sesame slaw w/our cabbage and watermelon radish (storage veg); quinoa pancakes. The other picture is orzo with vegan basil/cashew pesto (made in summer then put in the freezer) and steamed beets with mustard vinaigrette.

#2 of our 5 Great Things About CSAs is Health. Fad diets come and go, but fresh veggies are always in style! A diverse mix of fresh, whole, nutrient rich produce is the cornerstone of any health-promoting diet. Knowing that these vegetables rich in antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, fiber, pure water, and loads of flavor are coming your way every week helps orient cooking and eating habits toward produce-rich, delicious meals.

Smelled like spring yesterday and was HOT. Dan's been unloading piles of compost to start spreading on the beds. CSA Day is in only a few days! Here's #3 in our countdown: Ecology. We use farming practices that build healthy soils, restore soil carbon, conserve water, and minimize pollution of soil, air, and water. There are plenty of other ways to grow vegetables, but this is what we believe in and choose. As a member of our CSA, that's what you are helping to support.

Continuing our 5 Great Things About CSAs countdown!
#4: Quality. The farm provides members with high quality, healthy, nutrient-dense, fresh, local, and low fossil-fuel food. Throughout the season, we always hear from our members how fresh the produce tastes and how long it lasts. Most of what goes into shares is picked up within 24 hours of being harvested. The only way to get fresher produce is to grow it yourself!

I added “National” to make it seem more important. Just like National Pizza Day! SO IMPORTANT. Not at all like President’s Day, which is very fancy and gets printed on calendars. Anywho, CSA Day is coming up this Friday, and we hope that all y'all are scratching your itch for spring by looking for a local CSA (like ours!) to join. To help ratchet up the excitement and anticipation, we've put together a Top 5 Great Things About CSAs List. Let us know if you agree that these things are indeed great!

#5: Affordable. Farm members buy directly from our farm! There is no middleman. Yes, there are different ways to buy food that are local, from farmer’s markets and food hubs, grocery stores, and sometimes box services. But by buying directly from farmers through CSA, no income is lost to vendor fees, retailers, or aggregators. CSA has the lowest overhead for farmers and we believe has potential to be the most secure income stream because as the season is being planned, it’s also being paid for through sign ups. CSA prices reflect a fair balance between our needs to cover costs of production and pay living wages to ourselves and our workers, and members’ needs for food that is accessible and affordable. We show our appreciation for members’ early commitment by aiming to provide a weekly share with a market value that exceeds the share cost. CSAs are a great value for so, so many reasons.

To produce our Top 5, we used some of the language from the CSA Charter on the Small Farm Central website (www.smallfarmcentral.com). Thanks for the inspiration!

Radish. It's what's for dinner. The first of our seeds arrived in the mail last week and I counted out packets today... 72. And many more are on the way. We grow about 40 categories of vegetables, herbs, & annual fruit, but twice as many varieties than that to keep our fields diverse and to keep share bags colorful, tasty, and interesting. What are you looking forward to getting in your CSA share this season?

01/13/2018
