Well since Jason decided to sell his good horse and fell in love with one of Sonya & Vic’s VSR Performance Horses yearling fillies. We made him sort on foot this past weekend 😂 Just kidding. Incase you didn’t know you can learn more about reading cattle on foot vs being on your horse! Turns out is a great sorting horse 😜 Shout out to Rob at Crossroads Ranch LLC for always putting on a good time. If you looking to read cattle, do a little roping or sorting. He’s your man! I believe he has one spot open for his March clinic but they go fast!!!

This isn’t just about show horses! If you own a horse, your cousin’s brother’s sister has a horse, you’ve been on a trail ride once, visited a petting zoo, or have an old retiree in the pasture—take two minutes to sign this petition. This isn’t even really about horses. It’s about unelected government agencies telling you how to live your life. If they had their way, you’d be eating nothing but processed food and enslaved to the medical system. If you have a backbone, now’s the time to stand up and say NO.

Alvin and his life partner, Angela, are looking for a new home. Alvin identifies as a dog—or at least he thinks he is. He’s mostly a menace to society if he escapes his enclosure. He’ll break into your house, eat your plants, sleep in your bed, and s**t on your porch.

Angela, on the other hand, is a Nigerian/Fainting doe who is likely breedable, though I’ve never bred her, so I can’t say for sure. She’s not as friendly and definitely not the troublemaker her partner is. I’m willing to let her go for a lower price if you also take the “criminal” along with her.

Do you have a passion for horses and experience with young horses and stallions? Black Clover Ranch is looking for a dedicated and reliable individual to join our team as a part-time barn worker/stable hand! This is a 3-day-a-week position with the potential to transition into a full-time role.

What You’ll Do
✔️ Muck and clean stalls, ensuring clean and fresh bedding.
✔️ Sweep and maintain clean aisleways and workspaces.
✔️ Turn out horses safely, including young horses and stallions.
✔️ Groom horses, clean hooves, and braid manes and tails for shows or special occasions.
✔️ Monitor horse health and behavior, reporting concerns promptly.

What We’re Looking For
🌟 Must be 18 years or older to apply.
🌟 Experience handling young horses and stallions.
🌟 Strong grooming skills, including proficiency in braiding.
🌟 Reliability, attention to detail, and a calm demeanor around horses.
🌟 Ability to work independently and perform physically demanding tasks.
🌟 Must be available 3 days per week, with flexibility for potential full-time work in the future.

While the snow piles up and the wind howls, Jason and I don’t think, “Wow, this sucks.” Instead, we think, “How can we make sure our animals thrive through this?” It’s the challenges that make this lifestyle so rewarding.

This weather gives us an opportunity to reflect:

✔️ How can we ensure the best care for our animals and our clients’ animals?

With no other heat source, the temperature in our concrete barn is sitting just below 40°F this afternoon—even with a real feel of -4°F outside!The benefits of a well-built concrete barn are hard to beat.

We’ve moved on from No Stirrup November to something even better—No Hands January! I’ve been working with Moo (Buckin Foolish) to ride off my seat and legs with minimal pressure, and this coming 3-year-old stud has blown me away.For an amateur rider like me, Moo’s brains, patience, and willingness to learn are unmatched. Not to mention, he’s starting to look incredible, too! 🐴✨I couldn’t be more excited for his future—and for the foals he’ll sire. No panicking! Just get prepared!

Rumor has it the cold weather is arriving soon! Here are some things to keep in mind:

💦 Offering warm (not hot) water can help encourage horses to drink who may find cold water aversive this time of year. Sneaking in water through soaking feeds (as pictured below) can give additional sources of hydration as well. Just be sure to remove promptly what isn’t consumed to avoid it freezing over. Check for frozen layers on the water sources and break those up, removing the ice chunks. Some horses will break the ice on their own, some horses will wait for others to break it often reducing the consumption of water.

🧂 The use of electrolytes or salts can be helpful for some horses. Do not contaminate the main water source with the electrolytes or salts, always be sure to offer in an additional bucket of water (or add to feed if they will eat it). 🏡 Shelter where the horses can take a break from the wind and wet weather is crucial. Be sure that fellow pasture mates aren’t blocking the use of the shelter for horses that may need it.

🧥Blanketing: Many healthy and happy horses that are maintaining solid winter coats and weights often don’t require blanketing during this time, providing they have full access to shelter and quality forage. If your horse needs a blanket, blanket them. If not, don’t blanket. Blanketing is an individual decision and based on your horse’s weight, health condition, and husbandry. Refer to our previous post on blanketing considerations.

🌾Provide access to quality forage! The body temperature raises due to the fermentation through the digestion process of hay in the hind gut and aids in keeping horses warm. Fly masks can offer protection from eye irritation in round bales (for those horses who love to shove their heads as far inside them as possible) and blowing snow, just be sure to continually check under the mask for any changes to the eye structures themselves and remove as needed.

🚶🏻‍♂️🚶🏿‍♀️Movement is good to help keep things in motion, but turnout options may be limited for stalled shod or stalled show horses. Consider hand-walking or some turnout time in an indoor arena for light exercise (if appropriate AND safe based on your horse’s individual needs).

🍲 Keep your feeding routine consistent. Avoid sudden changes of brands or feeds during these extreme temperature swings.

⏰ Don’t change routine now. This isn’t the time to alter your horse’s established schedule or add in new training. Changes cause stress.

If your veterinarian must visit your horse due to an emergency:

- Provide warm water. If they need to administer enteral fluids, warm water is appreciated this time of year.

- Have an accessible route to the horse.

- Give your veterinarian as much advance warning as possible. If you notice symptoms of colic or choke, discuss with your provider and determine a plan. ‼️

- Have your equine pharmacy available and out of the cold so it’s ready to use at the direction of your veterinarian.

Most horses have the ability to weather the winter cold better than we give them credit for…. however, by observing your horse, you can help witness stress related changes and update your veterinarian for any concerns for appropriate intervention! Stay warm!!
