For those familiar with Orrick Acres, you know that 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 isn’t just a horse—she’s family to so many. She has been a beloved part of our horse lessons program, bringing joy, confidence, and growth to so many. Sadly, her cancer has returned, and tomorrow she will undergo her second surgery in less than a year at the Missouri University Equine Center in Columbia.

This surgery is vital but comes with emotional and financial challenges—especially during an already difficult fall for our family.

With over 3,000 followers and never having formally introduced myself, I felt like today was a good day to do so. So hello, friends, and welcome to Orrick Acres!

My name is Penny Orrick, whether you’ve been following Orrick Acres for a few days or a few years, I’m so grateful to have you here. I have a deep love for animals of all shapes and sizes, which has grown into my own personal menagerie on the farm. From our furry friends—horses, goats, sheep, camels, cows, pigs, dogs,— to our feathered friends, each animal at Orrick Acres brings its own personality to our farm. Sharing their unique stories and showcasing God’s amazing animals with all of you is a true joy!

Aside from my passion for animals, I’m also a proud mom to four amazing kids: Andi, Kodi, Samuel, and Silas. I began a journey into homeschooling in 2019, and it has been one of the most rewarding decisions of my life. I cherish the chance to watch them grow, learn, and explore every day, and homeschooling has allowed us to create a close-knit family bond. This year, our oldest wanted to attend high school at SJCS, which has been a transition for all of us. Life is always full of adventures with these four, and I wouldn’t have it any other way!

My husband, Matt, is a wonderful, hardworking man who works on the railroad as an ultrasonic technician. His job takes him across the country, so while he may not be home very often, he’s the glue that holds things together here at Orrick Acres. Matt is the one who keeps all our equipment running smoothly—whether it’s the tractor, trucks, or any other “tool” we rely on for our daily farm work. He takes care of the maintenance, repairs, and all the behind-the-scenes work that keeps us functioning during the week. I’m extremely grateful for God’s blessing in bringing us together and for Matt’s support of my “crazy” dreams and this farm, and we make the most of our time together. I couldn’t ask for a better partner in this wild and wonderful life we’ve built.

Along with the love of our animals and family, we also run a 300+ acre hay operation that keeps us busy throughout the growing season. From spring preparation to summer and sometimes even fall cutting and baling, we work hard to produce quality hay that feeds not only our own animals but also supports other local farmers

As a Christ-centered business, we believe in operating with integrity and treating everyone with kindness and respect. Jousting was a new addition to our advanced/intermediate classes this fall. I think students and horses alike did well with the pool noodles. I throughly enjoyed watching it all 🤣❤️

Announcements. Rescue. Excitement. Partnership.

I'm going to try to make this short and sweet. We have debated on when to announce our next steps. But with announcement three we felt like today was a good day. Our horse lesson program started in 2017 with a handful of students, Jack, Star and Savannah (see 1st picture). Fast forward to 2023 we have now rescued and/or given a home to 30+/- horses/donkeys and provided endless memories to over 200 students. We love each and every one of them and they will always have a home here with us.

FIRST ANNOUCEMENT - Cara and I (and our amazing, supportive husbands) have been working on the idea of a Senior Horse and Abandoned Livestock Sanctuary for almost a year. We hope to see the fruits of that labor soon! We have many oldies ourselves that need to retire from our Lesson Program and we would love to rescue many other senior horses and keep them out of the kill pens. See second photo of the call we just got today.

SECOND ANNOUCMENT - As many of our Horse Lesson Families know, many of our horse lesson horses are no "young pups". Many were rescued or released to us after having given most of their life to hard work (not that hard work is bad). In order to continue our Lesson Program as we have been operating, we need some young blood brought into our program. This goes hand in hand with the Rescue as we need a plan for our older Lesson Horses retiring.

We have only gotten this far with the help of this amazing community. We are here to hear your feedback and thoughts!

THIRDLY, we have our eye on a few horses, currently in a kill pen, that we think would make amazing Lesson Horses. Sadly they are set to ship out of the states tomorrow. If you have a desire (monetarily) to help us bring them home, reach out to the page or myself.
