Radar, the red fox, is looking stunning in his winter coat! 🦊 Our four foxes were rescued from the wild in Idaho. Born in April 2013, they arrived as young pups and were given a caring, forever home at Northwest Trek.

Our adorable bison calf, born November 3, continues to do well, bonding with her mom and the rest of the bison herd in the Free-Roaming Area. As the young calf continues to grow, its reddish-orange fur will turn the darker brown shade of her parents. Her head is already changing to brown! 🦬

Tanner the rescued bobcat having fun with a stick! 🐾

Tanner was born in the wild around 2012, and brought to Northwest Trek from a wildlife rehabilitation center in Montana. Tanner is a playful cat most of the time and enjoys spending time with his rescued bobcat buddy, Tahoma. Tanner has a high prey drive and is a master at taking down squirrels or birds that stray into his habitat. He works well on training with keepers, but very much prefers consistency and routine. And like most cats, if he doesn’t want to do something, he won’t.

Watching our bull elk practice sparring is always exciting, even outside of their rutting (breeding) season. The older bulls are practicing and teaching the younger bulls how it's done.

Happy howls! 🐺 If you look to the sky today, you will see the first full moon of 2025. 🌝 The full moon in January is traditionally known as the “Wolf” Moon. Legend has it that wolves howled more at the first full moon of the year than any other. However, canine experts have found no connection between the phases of the moon and howling wolves. Wolves communicate visually in sophisticated ways, using body posture, facial expressions, and tail positions. Audible communication is the howl, which bonds the pack, helps them reassemble, and is sometimes just for play.

The forest and habitat surrounding Northwest Trek make an excellent home for various species, especially birds. 🐦 We partnered with Puget Sound Bird Observatory and hosted multiple bird banding events last year. During the course, participants banded 156 birds representing 24 species. Read the story to learn more at nwtrek.org/bonus-birds 🪶

Marigold, our 8-month-old skunk, recently had a routine wellness exam and passed with flying colors! While under anesthesia, she received x-rays, an ultrasound, a dental check and nail trim, and a birth control implant. Weighing in at a healthy 5 pounds, Marigold is thriving. She’s now ready to rejoin Dewey, our two-year-old striped skunk, in their shared habitat. The duo will be reunited later this week, and we can’t wait to see them together again!

Cheveyo, the majestic rescued bald eagle, enjoys a refreshing bird bath. 🦅 Cheveyo was rescued in New York with a gunshot wound to her left wing, which had to be amputated. Her ability to navigate her space is limited, so we made it possible for her to get where she wants to be in her habitat.

We are saddened to share that Carly, our beloved 15-year-old cougar, was humanely euthanized following a decline in health from advanced kidney failure. The rescued cougar came to Northwest Trek after being deemed non-releasable and found as an orphaned cub in Washington State in 2009. Carly was a magnificent ambassador and inspired countless guests about wildlife conservation. Carly was a beloved member of our family, and her loss is felt deeply by our staff and all who had the privilege of knowing her. We extend our heartfelt condolences to everyone who loved and cared for her.

It is of critical importance to note that Carly’s loss is not related to the recent cases of HPAI that have been reported in wild and domestic felids.
