Allied Veterinary Service, a private locally-owned clinic, was created in response to a community-wide need for Emergency and Critical Care services in the Eau Claire, Brooklyn Park, and Twin Cities area. We provide care 24/7 in Minneapolis, overnight and 24/7 weekend and holiday care in Eau Claire and Anoka, and urgent care in Brooklyn Park.

🎄🐾 Allied’s Holiday Naughty List: Cooked Bones Edition 🐾🎄

We know how tempting it can be to save that bone from the standing rib roast, holiday ham, or even the turkey as a special treat for your pet. But cooked bones land on Allied’s Naughty List for good reason—they can be extremely dangerous for your furry friends!

🚫 They Splinter
Cooked bones can easily splinter into sharp pieces that can cause serious injuries, including:
•Choking hazards
•Mouth and throat injuries
•Tears or punctures in the digestive tract

🚫 Blockages
Even if a cooked bone doesn’t splinter, it can break into chunks too large for your pet to safely pass, causing dangerous blockages that may require emergency surgery.
🚫 Tooth Damage
Cooked bones can also be dense and brittle, putting your pet at risk for painful cracked or broken teeth.

🎄🐾 Allied’s Holiday Naughty List: Tinsel Edition 🐾🎄
Ah, tinsel—the sparkly holiday decoration that catches the light and your pet’s attention. While it may add a festive touch to your tree, it lands firmly on Allied’s Naughty List for holiday hazards.

✨ The Problem with Tinsel
Pets—especially curious cats—find tinsel absolutely mesmerizing. Unfortunately, many can’t resist the urge to bat at it, chew on it, or even eat it.
🚨 Why It’s Dangerous
Tinsel may seem harmless, but it poses significant risks:
• Digestive Issues: Tinsel isn’t digestible and can cause serious gastrointestinal blockages.
• Internal Injuries: Its long, stringy nature can lead to a condition called a “linear foreign body,” where the tinsel bunches up and can damage the intestines.
• Emergency Surgery: Severe cases often require surgery to remove the obstruction and repair damage.

🐾 Tinsel Butt Isn’t Cute
While some cases may result in the infamous "tinsel butt" (yes, that’s a thing), it’s not worth the risk. If it’s going in, it’s best to keep it out of your pet-friendly home altogether.

🎄🐾 Allied’s Holiday Naughty List: Rawhide Edition 🐾🎄

This time of year, those colorful red and green rawhides or the comically large ones tied with a bow might seem like the perfect stocking stuffer for your pup. But here’s the truth about rawhide—and why it lands at the top of our Naughty List:

🚫 Limited Sourcing Transparency: Many rawhide products lack clear information about their sourcing, leaving you guessing about where they come from.
🚫 Harmful Dyes: The red and green dyes used to make them “festive” aren’t necessarily safe for dogs.
🚫 Chemically Treated: Rawhide is a byproduct of the leather industry and undergoes heavy chemical treatments—including formaldehyde (yes, you read that right!). It’s also coated with adhesives, preservatives, and artificial flavorings to make it more appealing.
🚫 Indigestible: Rawhide isn’t very digestible, meaning it can cause choking, blockages, or severe digestive issues if it doesn’t pass through your pet’s system.

🎁 Choose Something on the Nice List Instead!
This holiday season, opt for safer, healthier alternatives like:
