Employee Spotlight 🔦

Hailey joined our team in October 2021 as a kennel and daycare attendant. She became our Assistant Facilities Manager in Fall 2022. Hailey lives with her husband and their 2 dogs, Nova and Camber.

Sadly, we will be saying our goodbyes to Hailey at the end of this month 😭 She and her family will be moving to Wisconsin Rapids where they recently purchased their first home. While we will miss her dearly, we know she will continue doing amazing things wherever she ends up!

Have you ever wondered what goes on day-to-day during your pet's stay? Well, let's go over a day in the life of a Paws & Claws guest!

🐾 The day starts at 7 am when our kennel attendants arrive. They start by locking all of the dogs into their outdoor runs so they can clean any messes from overnight, get breakfast ready, and get water buckets filled. Once all the indoor runs are cleaned and breakfast is dispersed, the dogs are let back in to eat.

🐾 The kennel attendant then makes their way to the Cat and Small Animal rooms where they again clean any overnight messes, scoop litter boxes, feed breakfast, and fill water buckets. All animals get fresh dishes each morning.

🐾 Then comes miscellaneous cleaning tasks. This includes cleaning outdoor runs, reviewing and preparing for playtimes, loading and starting the dishwasher, and more.

🐾 The dogs who are doing daycare will head to the daycare building for the day around 9:30 am. When the weather is nice, we leave the dogs’ doggie doors open so they can go in and out as they please.

🐾 Next, playtimes are started and continue throughout the day until they are all complete. While playtimes are being completed, the kennel attendants also fulfill a variety of cleaning tasks throughout the building such as cleaning the bathrooms, walls, and floors.

🐾 Lunches are fed around noon. If the doggie doors are closed, the dogs are let out again around 12 pm. Throughout the day the kennel attendants walk through our different enclosure areas and check in with all the animals, along with bringing in and out the various animals who are checking in or checking out.

🐾 The outdoor runs are cleaned for a second time around 5 pm, and then dogs are again locked outside so indoor runs can be spot-cleaned, dinner can be dispersed, and water buckets can be filled. Cat and Small Animal enclosures are also spot-cleaned again, litter boxes are scooped, dinner dispersed, and water bowls/bottles filled.

🐾 Once we’ve closed for drop-off and pick-up for the day, general cleaning of the building begins, consisting of sweeping, vacuuming, and mopping all floors and other cleaning tasks. Around 7 pm the cats and small animals are put to bed for the night.

🐾 The last let-out for the dogs is between 8:30-9 pm. Once all dogs are locked inside for the night, the outdoor aisles are walked to double-check that all dogs are secured, then the building is armed and locked for the night. The next morning, the process starts all over!

Libby, one of our talented groomers, just celebrated her 4 year anniversary at Paws & Claws, having started here in June 2020. She trained under an extremely experienced professional groomer & breeder in the Milwaukee area, where she fell in love with Bedlington Terriers. Libby loves going to dog shows with her dog D’Artagnan (Dart), along with spending time with her family & other pets, 2 cats, Tootsie & Porthos, & 2 tortoises, Shawn & Gus.

While daycare is a fun outlet for energy and a great enrichment opportunity, it can cause issues if a dog comes too often.

🐾 Think of it this way: if you hung out with a group of up to 14 of your friends for 6-12 hours, your social battery would probably be fairly low at the end of the day right? If you did that multiple days in a row, don’t you think you’d be pretty exhausted and irritable by the end? It’s the same for dogs!
🐾 While they all have different levels of intro/extroversion, even the most extroverted dogs get overwhelmed and overstimulated after 4 or 5 days of daycare in a row. Coming too infrequently can also cause trouble, as the dog isn’t able to form a routine and get comfortable with the daycare process.

🐶 To prevent issues on either end of this spectrum we recommend dogs come at least once per week, but no more than 4 times per week.

Congrats to June's Pet of the Month: Bella!

Bella is an adorable Labrador Retriever that has been coming to see us since 2015! Bella loves staying with us in our Suites, her favorite activities are playing fetch and getting cuddles, but nothing compares to her love for the pool! Bella is a very avid swimmer, and she always knows exactly where to go when her playtime comes around! We can never wait to see this happy, energetic girl again!

Brenna started at Paws & Claws in July of 2019 as a kennel/daycare attendant and receptionist and she is now our Assistant Manager! Brenna and her fiancé live with their 4 cats, Mongo, Juliet, Blair, and Sammi, 2 ferrets, Leo and Opal, and painted turtle, Frankie! In her free time, Brenna enjoys making art and watching horror movies.
