On this day in 1978, the first transatlantic hot air balloon trip was completed by three Americans; Max Anderson, Ben Abruzzo, and Larry Newman. These cool cats departed from Maine on August 11th, and traveled in Double Eagle II over 3,000 miles in 137 hours, landing west of Paris. This whole trip was well documented by Eileen von Feline, following them closely in a second balloon.
