Who’s that handsome man!? It’s Cooper, our !

Cooper is a five year old Golden Retriever, who has been coming to Mission Animal Hospital since he was just 5 months old! He came into Mission this week for an important part of his wellness routine: allergy management! Cooper has had recurring issues with his ears and skin due to allergies, so consistent treatment is important to keep him happy and healthy! Cooper also had his annual exam and vaccines, to ensure all is well and he’s all set for a year and love, play, and belly rubs. 💚

The long term treatment of chronic health issues, like allergies, can be expensive and inaccessible for families, but leaving these issues untreated can be highly problematic. Mission Animal Hospital makes our care accessible so your beloved pets can get the care they need.

Kittens, kittens, kittens! Check out these cuties, Peanut, Reeses, Teddy, and Muffin, who are our !

Around Mission Animal Hospital, summertime is known as “kitten season.” Cats are more likely to give birth during the warmer months and while the days are longer, which means in cold climates like ours, a lot more kittens are born in the spring, summer, and fall.

We had the pleasure of welcoming four kittens into our appointments last week, who all needed some early vaccines and to be treated for fleas! Peanut, Reeses, Teddy, and Muffin were a little nervous for their first visit to the vet, but they did great and are now going to be much more comfortable now that they’ve had doses of flea and tick preventative!

Providing accessible wellness care for new family members is an important part of Mission Animal Hospital’s work and helps us enact our vision of a world where every pet has a family and every family has a vet.

Serina is so sweet, she just had to be our !

Serina was 7 months old and had just come to live with her new forever family when she got her little leg caught in a baby gate, ending up with a broken leg. Her family brought her to an emergency veterinarian, where x-rays confirmed the break. Serina then came to Mission Animal Hospital, where our accessible veterinary care made it possible for her broken leg to be repaired with our boarded surgeon and our Advanced Surgery Practice! After weeks of rest and care after her surgery, Serina is all healed up! She’s thriving at home with her family who love her so much.

Mission Animal Hospital is here for families when the unexpected arises, at all points in a pets life. We’re proud to offer our donor subsidized Mission Program pricing throughout our various services, so that all families can live their best lives with their pets.

Thankfully, Mission Animal Hospital’s accessible veterinary care made is possible for Willow to receive 28 bandage changes until the wound had completely closed! Talk about love and dedication by Willow’s family!

All eye(s) on Brummell!

This sweet little one-eyed fella is our ! Brummell came to Mission Animal after his best buddy, Rowan, noticed that beloved Brummell was squinting his eye and having some discharge, and it was only getting worse and worse. Mission Animal Hospital’s accessible veterinary care made it possible for Brummell to have his eye removed, leaving him with the cutest permanent wink!

Thanks to Mission’s accessible care, Brown was also able to have testing done to determine the cause of Brummell’s eye infection.Tests found that Brummell had contracted a fungal disease, unusual in cats, called blastomycosis.

Blastomycosisis a fungal infection caused by Blastomyces dermatitidis, commonly found in soil and decaying wood. Cats typically contract it through inhalation of fungal spores. Symptoms can include coughing, difficulty breathing, fever, and skin lesions, requiring prompt veterinary treatment to manage and potentially cure the infection. In Brummell’s case, it appeared that the fungal infection had infected the eye instead of the lungs.

Mission Animal Hospital is proud to receive support from Adtalem Global Education for our Veterinary Student Externship Program, where fourth-year veterinary students do rotations at Mission to learn about the Spectrum of Care approach to veterinary medicine! Check out Adtalem Global Education's recent article on Spectrum of Care and our Externship Program!

https://www.adtalem.com/newsroom/articles/when-offering-options-is-the-standard-in-veterinary-care

Spectrum of Care is a recently defined concept in veterinary medicine, where a veterinarian presents their clients with a range of options for the pet’s treatment. These options take into account not only patient care and evidence-based medicine, but also the client’s budget, expectations, and cultural sensitivities.

A range or spectrum of options, can range from basic, lower cost, low-tech, and low resource dependent, to advanced, higher cost, state of the art, and resource dependent.

Simply put, Spectrum of Care is offering options without judgment.

The Spectrum of Care mindset is a major way that we can combat inaccessibility in veterinary medicine that is not specific to a nonprofit model. This is how veterinarians at Mission Animal Hospital practice, and how we would advocate ALL veterinarians practice.

Mission Animal Hospital is committed to defining, educating, and promoting Spectrum of Care patient management in veterinary medicine, in order to benefit pets and people alike.

Taking a ‘spectrum of care’ approach means providing judgment-free paths for owners and their pets.

How cute is Cody?!

This little guy is a 19 week old Shiba Inu/Pomeranian mix and out ! Cody came to Mission Animal Hospital just 10 days after he joined his new family. He had jumped out of a car, but caught his leg on the way down, leading to a broken bone in his right leg. His family took him to an emergency veterinarian, where they diagnosed the fractured leg, but referred Cody’s family to Mission Animal Hospital for surgery with our Advanced Surgery Practice.

Our Advanced Surgery Practice was able to repair Cody’s broken femur and help him recover, so he could go back to his usual puppy self! We’re happy to say that Cody is happy and healthy with his family who love him so much!

At Mission Animal Hospital, we believe that when the unexpected happens, no one should have to make difficult decisions about their pets, or choose between veterinary care and paying rent, putting food on the table, accessing necessary prescriptions, or any other basic need. That’s why we offer donor-subsidized care through our Mission Program.

How dang cute is Darla?!

Darla is our , who came to Mission Animal Hospital as part of our High-Quality, High-Volume Spay and Neuter Service which is full of kittens as we’re well into kitten season! Yes, there is a “kitten season!” Cats are more likely to give birth during the warmer months and while the days are longer, which means in cold climates like ours, a lot more kittens are born in the spring, summer, and fall.

For our friends in the pet rescue world, kitten season can mean an influx of cats in their rescues during these months, and Mission Animal Hospital is proud to be able to offer our High-Quality High Volume Spay and Neuter Service to our rescue partners. Talk about puppy dog eyes! 😍

This is Zoey, a 9 year old lab mix and our ! Zoey’s family noticed that she was lethargic and not eating,

Zoey’s family brought her to an emergency veterinarian, where she was diagnosed with a pyometra. A pyometra is an infection of the uterus in unspayed pets, and it is life-threatening if left untreated. Not only that, but they also found a mass on Zoey’s spleen!

Zoey came to Mission Animal Hospital to make the life-saving surgery to remove both her uterus and spleen accessible for her family! We were able to perform the surgery the following day, and Zoey is now happy, healthy, and back to her normal self with her family who loves her so much.

Mission Animal Hospital knows that our pets are family, and we’re proud to provide accessible, life-saving veterinary care to families in need.

Check out handsome man, Ozzy!

Ozzy is our ! He is a one year American Pit Bull Terrier who came into Mission Animal Hospital’s Urgent Care after a scuffle at the dog park left him with a wound on his side. It was bleeding and uncomfortable for Ozzy, and needed medical attention.

Mission Animal Hospital’s Urgent Care was able to clean and close Ozzy’s wound and insert a drain to help prevent infection and further issues. Ozzy looked mighty cute in his t-shirt to protect the drain while he healed! He came into Mission to have the drain removed, and everything looked great! Mission Animal Hospital is proud to host 4th year veterinary students for rotations to learn about Spectrum of Care Medicine in our hospital, and we’re thrilled to announce that we’ve received a generous grant from the Adtalem Global Education Foundation to support this program! This foundation is committed to promoting skills-based workforce development and career readiness programming in the healthcare industry and related fields, including veterinary medicine.

Our veterinary student externs receive hands-on opportunities to learn alongside veterinarian mentors and receive experiential learning in our busy, multi-service practice. We know that by naming, identifying and teaching the Spectrum of Care approach to veterinary medicine, we can influence the next generation of veterinarians to practice in a community-centric way that increases the accessibility of veterinary medicine on a broad scale.

Who’s that beautiful girl!? Meet Kira! Even a cone can’t distract from her beauty.

Kira is a four year old Alaskan Husky, and our ! She came to Mission Animal Hospital’s Urgent Care when she was vomiting and feeling very lethargic. Her family was so worried about her and brought her to an emergency veterinary hospital to be checked out. They diagnosed Kira with a pyometra, or infected uterus. This condition is life threatening, and Kira needed surgery to have her uterus removed.

Kira came to Mission Animal Hospital, where her surgery would be more accessible, thanks to our Mission Program and interest-free payment plans! Kira was able to have same-day surgery in our Urgent Care and is now doing so much better at home with her loving family!

At Mission Animal Hospital, we know that pets are family, and when the unexpected arises with our beloved pets, no one should be forced to make difficult decisions because of their financial situation. Our accessible, nonprofit care helps more than 10,000 pets from about 8,000 families each year. Because they’re family.

How sweet is Sydney!

This beautiful girl is our , and she came to Mission Animal Hospital after her primary veterinarian found a small mammary mass that needed to be removed. Mission Animal Hospital made the surgery to have the mass removed accessible for her family, who love Sydney so much and want her to have the best life possible!

Thankfully, the tumor was found to not be cancerous, but Sydney will need to be closely observed for more mammary masses in the future. Mammary masses are most common in dogs who are unspayed, or are spayed later in life, but can happen to any dog! The best treatment for these masses is surgical removal as soon as possible.

We’re so glad that we could help Sydney and her family access the veterinary care that she needed to live their best lives. Isn’t Art handsome!?

This sweet six month old Italian greyhound is our ! He jumped out of his family member’s arms and ended up with a broken leg! They brought him to his primary care veterinarian, who took x-rays that showed the break in his radius and ulna on his front right leg.

Art’s family wanted to have his leg repaired, which can be a costly procedure at many animal hospitals. Mission Animal Hospital is proud to be able to offer fracture repairs with our Board Certified Surgeon, and we make those repairs more accessible to families through our subsidized care in our Mission Program, as well as interest-free payment plans.

Art has healed from his surgery, and he’s now getting to return to normal puppy behavior at home with his family who loves him so so much!
