USDA researchers have made a critical discovery in the fight against honey bee colony collapse in the U.S. 🐝🇺🇸

After investigating severe hive losses reported in early 2025, scientists found widespread infection with Deformed Wing Virus A & B and Acute Bee Paralysis Virus — both major threats to bee survival.

These viruses are spread by Varroa mites, and nearly all mites sampled were found to be resistant to amitraz, the key miticide relied on by most beekeepers.

This resistance is now believed to be a major factor behind the loss of over 60% of commercial colonies.

We are very sad to hear about the tragic death of an experienced beekeeper in Las Vegas. Although the official report is not complete, he is thought to have knocked over a container of bees inside his home without his protective gear on. The bees were thought to be potentially Africanized = “killer bees”. We want to reassure our community that we are fortunate here in Northern Utah to have cold winters and thus AHB (Africanized Honey Bees) cannot survive. This is part of why we do not ship our bees off to California in the winter to pollinate crops. With that said, if you come across a hive or a swarm do not bother them. Also never try to remove a bee swarm on your own - call an experienced beekeeper or your local beekeeper association.

The Big Pink Bear 🐻 had a big couple of days! We picked up our 3 new nuc hives last night and took them to the veggie farm. Then BPB 🐻 went back this morning and moved everyone into their new 🏠 . Back to the home hives to look for the queen 👑 we introduced when we split the Rooster hive about a week ago and alas - the girls 🐝 🐝 didn’t seem to have liked her ☠️ 👑 . So BPB drove to Ogden to pick up two new queens 👑 👑 and split the Rooster hive again because they are huge and showing signs of swarming. Those girls 🐝 🐝 were CRANKY 😡 which really isn’t much fun for BPB.
So……now we have 7 hives when just yesterday am there were 3. 😅

Shout out to Aunt Bee and Queen Rooster for making it thru winter and special thanks to Pookie Bear 🐻 for all of his help and for not panicking when one of our girls 🐝 got stuck in his sweatshirt hood last night at nuc pick up😳.
