🩷 Beautiful Dutch bun Kaia spent most of her young life with us here at Luna’s House…until a week ago when she was adopted by her new mama, Sarah! 💕

Kaia, estimated to be 3.5 years old, arrived at LH in September 2021. Though adorable, Kaia has always been rather timid. We don't think Kaia had much socialization or human interaction before she found herself at a local open-admission shelter. Due to her approximate age & the timing of her being found as a “stray,” we believe Kaia was most likely one of the many "Easter" bunnies who are sadly discarded each year once the novelty of caring for them wears off.😓

Kaia on worked on her confidence here at Luna's House & made progress, slowly but surely. She could sometimes be a spicy little nugget, but when she met Sarah for the first time, she melted…she just laid down & allowed Sarah to pet her, eyes closed & blissful. We knew Kaia had found her person.🥹

We are absolutely elated to report that we received the following update from Sarah only two days after Kaia went home with her:

“Kaia has blossomed SO much in the past 24 hours - I can't even believe how fast she's adjusting! She was (understandably) very nervous yesterday, but today she's exploring EVERYWHERE, and just did her first flop!!…I'm so happy and she seems to be pretty happy too. 😁”

✨Breaking News: Rick & Morty have been adopted!✨

This adorable pair of best buds arrived at Luna’s House in August 2023. After adding Rick & Morty to their home, the chins’ previous family discovered that some family members were very allergic to both the chins & their hay.😔

As rescue volunteers, we routinely hear “allergies” provided as a reason for surrender. With many of us being allergic to one or more species ourselves, it’s not always easy for us to understand giving up animals due to minor or moderate allergic reactions. 🤷‍♀️

However, in Rick & Morty’s case, the health of multiple family members was being significantly adversely affected. Despite trying HEPA filters, different types of hay, & various other strategies, the family finally came to the difficult conclusion that the chinchillas could not longer remain in their home.😢 Devastated, they contacted Luna’s House for help.

It was clear that Rick & Morty had been provided with lots of love🩵, a wonderful, spacious habitat🏠, & an ideal diet for chins.🌾 We knew finding a new home that would provide this same level of care would be a challenge, but we are delighted to announce that Rick & Morty now have their second chance with new mama Rosanna!🙌

Many thanks 🙏 to all our Small Animal volunteers who helped care for Rick & Morty during their time with us—without these incredible people, we could not help animals.💙

The boys have been living their best life with Rosanna for just over a week now. We are so happy for them and we wish Rock, Morty, & the lovely Rosanna all the best for many years to come! 🥳🫶🐾

A few months ago little Hank was taken to a local open-admission shelter as a stray, filthy & covered in mats.😢 He was so terrified that they gave him a few days to decompress before trying to get to know him.

Estimated to be about seven years old, when Hank arrived at Luna’s House, our amazing groomer Shena stepped in to help him.
Hank received a much-needed soothing bath🛁 , stylish (& much more comfortable!) haircut ✂️, & lots of TLC.💛

Still rather fearful, Hank was welcomed into foster care with lovely couple Robin & Darryl. In his foster home, Hank learned how to be loved & how to build confidence, courtesy of his foster parents, foster brother Remy, & foster kittos.🥰

A very shy but sweet natured little guy, we knew Hank would need time to trust a potential adoptive family. We also knew that, with patience & time, he would be a wonderful new family member, as he so enjoyed time with his foster parents, the company of other dogs,
& even cats!😸

Due to Hank’s timid demeanor, we worked with his adopters on a foster-to-adopt basis to make sure it was a good fit for everyone. We are absolutely delighted to report that Hank has been officially adopted!🥳

We thank Shena for working her magic for this special little one✨and Robin & Darryl for giving him a safe, loving foster home🏠!

We were recently visited by cousins Avery & Aubrey, who earned an impressive 💲3️⃣2️⃣0️⃣ to donate to Luna’s House by setting up a homemade lemonade & cookies stand in their neighborhood! 🍋🍪🍓

Enlisting the help of their parents & grandmom, these young entrepreneurs really raked in the dough for the animals…& delivered it with beautiful bright smiles! This is the second time we have been the beneficiaries of Avery & Aubree’s kindness & generosity🫶 & we are honored they have opted to help us help animals.☺️

We are grateful to all of those in the community who welcome our bringing adoptable animals offsite to meet & greet with our neighbors! This is one of the best ways for our dogs in particular to have the opportunity to meet their new families.🥰

🐾🩶 When Brody arrived at Luna’s House, he was only about 4-5 months old…a lanky little guy with giant puppy paws & lots of love to give!

We discovered that Brody was deaf, so many traditional voice-based training methods would not be effective for him. We reached out to amazing trainer Bryan of Old Line Canine Services to help Brody grow into the best pup he can be! Awesome Dog Team volunteer Tina worked closely with Brody & Bryan to ensure his progress.😊

With his absolutely stunning coloring & soulful eyes, we couldn’t understand why Brody was not getting much interest.😕 But our hopes for a forever home for Brody were realized when adopter Jeff came on the scene! 🙌

We could not be happier for Brody, his new Dad Jeff, & new human brother Gavin, who is also spending lots of time with our favorite grey pup. Please join us in celebrating Brody & his forever family!🩶🐾

🐾💚 Working with Scouts on their service projects is a rewarding, fulfilling experience—especially when the Scout is such an awesome young person! 💚🐾

DJ took on the task of not only constructing a greenhouse for us, but also refurbishing our raised bed garden.🪴 The new greenhouse will allow us to grow significantly more greens & veggies for the herbivores in our adoption programs.🥬🐇

Over several months, DJ worked to bring his project to fruition. He & his Unit Leader—who happens to be his Dad Dewayne, a US Marine Veteran🫡—spent hours constructing the moveable base for our brand new greenhouse. DJ then lead his team of volunteers in constructing the greenhouse & revamping our raised-bed garden! After a long day, the fruits of DJ’s labor were impressive…we cannot thank him enough! 😄

•••••✨💝 We now bring you Sylvie’s Story!💝✨•••••

As mentioned in Rita & Astor’s post earlier today, a difficult part of rescue life is seeing animals returned to our care after they have been in an adoptive home for years. At times an animal’s return is necessitated by a catastrophic life event or other insurmountable obstacle—these instances we understand. In fact, we are devastated right alongside those bringing the little one(s) back to us.😰

This was not the case with Sylvie, though. This sweet, gentle girl was adopted as a kitten in October 2010. In April, we received a call from Baltimore County Animal Services that Sylvie had been surrendered to them by her “guardians” of almost 13 years.💔

BCAS is an open-admission shelter—had they not scanned for a microchip & contacted us, Sylvie would likely have been euthanized. A scared, almost 14-year-old cat newly diagnosed as diabetic, Sylvie would not have been considered “adoptable.” Shelters are struggling with record numbers of surrendered pets …resources have to be allocated & heartbreaking decisions need to be made.

We explain to all adopters that any animals adopted from Luna’s House should be returned to us if they can no longer care for them—in fact, it’s part of our Adoption Contract—but sometimes people inexplicably choose not to do this. 😢

Volunteers immediately went to BCAS to get Sylvie, who was terribly frightened. We took Sylvie directly to Chadwell Animal Hospital for an exam & diagnostics then got her settled back in with us.

After a few weeks on a proper, portioned diet of high quality wet food, Sylvie’s blood glucose levels stabilized…she is no longer insulin-dependent! 🙌

Long-time LH supporters, adopters, & volunteers Al & Denise fell in love with Sylvie during their time volunteering with our kittos. Having previously adopted five other kitties from us over the years, the couple decided to open their hearts & home to one more little one in need.🥹

Yesterday Al & Denise took Sylvie to the loving home she deserves for her golden years. We have no doubt Sylvie will want for nothing for the rest of her days. We cannot thank Al & Denise enough for that peace of mind!🩷🫶🩷

A difficult part of rescue life is seeing animals returned to our care after they have been in an adoptive home for years. At times an animal’s return is necessitated by a catastrophic life event or other insurmountable obstacle—these instances we understand. In fact, we are devastated right alongside those bringing the little one(s) back to us.😰

But sadly, a lot of the time a return is due to one of the following:

😣 “Our kids are busier now,” “The kids don’t take care of them anymore,” or a similar sentiment…even though we educate adopters & impress upon them that a responsible adult must always be the primary caregiver for any animal.

😖 The animal is older now and has health issues—& possibly accompanying behaviors—that the adopters do not want to help them through…
We would argue that the unconditional love an animal has given an adopter for years is beyond worth the time & effort to assist them in their times of need!

These are the very typical reasons given for guinea girls Rita & Astor and senior kitty Sylvie finding their way back to us. But today we celebrate their adoptions into genuine forever homes! 🥳

We met Rita & Astor when they were only three weeks old in January 2021. When they came back to us a few months ago, we felt as though we had failed them—but we promised them to do better by them in the future. The girls’ new mama, Christine, has helped us do just that. We cannot thank her enough for providing these beautiful girls with a loving forever home! 💕🏠

👨‍🏫 Science Teacher Mr. Cupp (who happens to be the Dad of one of our amazing employees, Grace💖) contacted us to arrange a donation drive for our animals…and WOW!🤩 We were delighted with not only the fantastic amount of items collected, but the generous check we received to help Luna’s House in our mission to save & better the lives of animals in need.💙🐾

💖✨💙For our beautiful Charlie girl, the third time was the charm!💙✨💖

Charlie’s young life began with her mama & littermates at a farm in PA. At a tender eight weeks of age, she was “purchased” by a well-meaning but ill-prepared man right before Christmas as a “gift” for his young children.

Charlie was excited to spend the holidays with new human siblings, but found herself at Luna’s House before she could get comfortable. In a story as old as time, the man who took her home didn’t realize how much work caring for a very young pup can be.🙁

Being so young, needing lots of time & attention, Charlie went into foster care immediately upon arrival at Luna’s House. Of course, members of the foster family fell in love with her…how could they not?🥰 Charlie was so happy to be part of a family again, but it turns out she just wasn’t the right fit for their home.

Now seven months old, Charlie has found the ideal home for her! 🙌 Her new parents, Cheryl & Ron, are very familiar with chocolate lab pups and all their needs. Not only does Charlie girl have fantastic human caretakers, she was welcomed into the pack of her canine siblings Natty, Kalea, & Marley! 🐾🐾🐾

🎤🎶🤗Did you know that Luna’s House founders Nevin & Lisa met while singing karaoke? 🎤🎶🤗

It’s true! 🤷‍♀️ These two crazy kids who had a dream of saving animals met in 2000 in a little place called The Good Old Days in Bloomsburg, PA! 😃

Fast forward just over 23 years…May 15th marked 2️⃣0️⃣ years of marriage for Nevin & Lisa! The couple founded Luna’s House in 2007 and have seen over 3️⃣,1️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ animals of various species go to their forever homes 😃🙌

🥳 We can all agree this deserves a celebration! Luckily, we have the perfect opportunity—Karaoke for the Critters at The State Theater of Havre de Grace THIS Friday, 05/24/24 from 7pm to 11pm! 🎤🎶🐾

🐾💛 Way back in 2017, Madison collected monetary donations for Luna’s House as part of a junior high project. She visited our facility to present us with a generous check & that beautiful, contagious smile! 😊

This past week, Madison visited us again to deliver heaps of in-kind donations she collected for another service project. Now in college for diagnostic medical sonography 🩻, Madison still has an amazing, giving heart.❤️ We are so proud of & grateful for her altruism!

Adoptable pups Brody, Tiffany, Hank, Roland, & Sally all had a blast meeting so many nice, new friends—they soaked up all the head rubs & lovin’🥰 & will be dreaming of new homes this evening at our facility or in foster care.😴☺️

Luna’s House volunteers were able to chat with those enjoying craft brews, informing them of our adoption programs & what we do to help companion animals in the community. As you can see, a great time was had by all…we have some happy, tuckered out pups hoping they may have met their adopters today!🤞🐶🏠

Budgies (parakeets) Jamie & Owen and guinea pigs Hughie & Zara have found their forever homes🏠 and we couldn’t be happier for them & their new families!

Jamie & Owen are pleased to be a part of new Mom Donna’s flock—they now have three other budgie siblings!🐦 Hughie & Zara are the newest members of the Gostomski family, who report that they are already head-over-heels for their new additions.🥰

We are always excited to place our little ones of all species in loving homes of their own! Please help us celebrate the recent adoptions of these two dynamic duos 🥳

Donna found her way to Luna’s House in October 2020 after the guardian she had known her whole life sadly passed away.💔

Very shy with all new humans, Donna made some small strides at our facility but was understandably slow to trust us. We knew that even though Donna was an anxious kitty in our group-home setting here at the facility, she was a sweetie at heart & would make a wonderful companion for the right person.😸

We were delighted when previous rabbit adopter Sheila reached out in September of 2023 to let us know she would like to foster a senior cat—at 10+ years of age, Donna fit the bill! Sheila had adopted the stunning bun Gigi from LH months before & we knew she was a loving, devoted mama to her little ones. 🐇

Donna & Gigi became fast friends 🥰 & over time Donna learned to trust Sheila as her new forever guardian.🥹 When Sheila lost Gigi suddenly & tragically to acute GI stasis, Donna was there to help provide comfort through the loss.❤️‍🩹

This past Friday, Sheila visited our facility to make Donna’s adoption official. We could not be happier for this awesome pair of ladies! Please join us in congratulating them on finding one another! 🎉

Pets may become anxious during the eclipse, reacting as they would during a thunderstorm or fireworks display. 🎾 Provide distractions for active pets in the form of favorite toys or indoor games. 😌 Create a calm environment indoors. Close blinds & curtains so sudden changes in light won't disturb or frighten your animals. 🪟 Move cat trees, sofas, or potential perches away from windows to prevent cats from occidentally looking at the sun during the eclipse. 🦮 If you must take them outside, keep dogs on a leash with collar & ID tags.
