Continuing education is critical for veterinary professionals. Every year EMVS provides this benefit to DVMs as well as selected support staff (six support staff will be attending conferences in 2024)!! The new skills acquired are used to improve patient care and keep our clinic at the forefront.

Dr. Dixon is returning after attending AAEP lectures on gastric ulcers, imaging the cervical and thoracolumbar spine, as well as treatment for diseases of the axial skeleton.

Thank you clients for your patience during times of absence and thank you EMVS for an employment benefit typically only provided by larger companies.

By 2030 the U.S. Census Bureau anticipates a possible national shortage of 15,000 veterinarians especially in rural areas for large animals and livestock. Practices are short staffed for all positions. Here are reasons why:

* Post COVID spike of pets and animals

* High stress, burnout, and suicides in the industry. This is due to heavy workloads (seven days per week, 365 days per year, 12+ hour days). Veterinary staff care about animals. However, we are often name called, yelled at, criticized publicly, and experience unrealistic expectations.

* Mixed animal veterinarians are retiring and new veterinarians seek urban small animal clinics that are higher paying (more expensive for clients).

* Veterinarians and staff make lower wages when compared to other medical professions yet student loans are high.

The shortage is increasing wait times for appointments. Many clinics turn clients away or close when they are understaffed. EMVS works hard to help as many animals as we can (safely without compromising patient care), but it may require pet drop offs and you may encounter delays with requests in order for patients to remain our top priority.

We understand how difficult it can be as a client to wait when you have an animal in need. Here are ways you can help your veterinarian and their team so they can better serve you.

AAEP estimates that 900,000 horses will colic each year in the United States. Approximately 5 to 10% of colicky horses end up needing hospitalization and possibly surgery to correct the issue. East Mountain Veterinary Service offers an equine surgical room, padded stall for horses as they wake up from anesthesia, stalls with video surveillance and everything your horse may need to be treated. We recommend hospitalization when colic symptoms are initially noticed if pain management is unsuccessful and/or symptoms are progressing. Early intervention is an important factor for your horses recovery!

EMVS is excited to welcome our third DVM, Dr. Thuerauf!

Dr. Thuerauf spent her childhood in a tiny town called Datil, NM, and graduated from Silver High in Silver City, NM in 2015. She attended New Mexico State University for her undergraduate degree in Animal science with a minor in Organic Chemistry. After graduating Undergrad, she attended Washington State University for Veterinary school.

When growing up she showed livestock and horses in 4H, FFA, and AQHA. While always having a passion for animals she knew early on that she wanted to work with animals whether that would be becoming a jockey, horse trainer, or veterinarian. After working for a mixed animal practice in Silver City, NM she knew becoming a veterinarian would be a career that she would love forever! Dr. Thuerauf’s passion is training and competing on reining horses but also has hobbies of drawing, and spending time with family and friends. She is so grateful to be a part of the EMVS family and excited to see your furry loved ones!
