Last Hub tomato harvest of the 2024 season was this morning! Grand total of 1097 pounds over the last 8 weeks.

Also announcing this year's Tomato Fest flavor winners!!

Large Tomato Category:
1. Prairie Fire (7.5/10)
2. Early Choice Black (7.2/10)
3. Apricot Zebra (7.0/10)

All 3 best tasting large tomatoes are new to the Hub for this season! Each had heavy production and added great color, shape, and size diversity to the mix. They'll be back next season for sure.

Cherry Tomato Category:
1. Sungold (8.1/10) - 4x returning flavor champ!
2. Black Opal (7.7/10) - an improved offspring of black cherry with denser flavor and fewer splits. Will replace black cherry in our rotation next season
3. Large Jasper (6.8/10) - the original Jasper is a hybrid tomato but we've been saving seeds selectively from the hybrid offspring for 3 years now to dehybridize it into something that grows consistently from saved seeds and doesn't need seed repurchased each season. This breeding line seems to be almost there.

Catch your last tomatoes of the season at this Saturday's Hub market! Then they'll be gone til next April!

We 💚 SOIL!!
Beautiful day at the soil health workshop! We got our hands in the dirt doing soil texture by feel with Dr. Engil Pereira and put lots of good yard waste to use with a hugelkultur build led by Janet Schofield with Cameron County Master Gardeners. Finished up the day with a walk-around the Hub discussing our soil building practices like cover cropping, composting local waste streams, incorporating chickens, and tillage reduction through tarping that have helped improve our soil conditions over the last 4 years.
Thanks to all you joined us!

Fun morning planting our first research trial of the season with UTRGV's Plant Pathology Lab ! Robin and Christian soaked half the cowpeas with Bacillus subtilis (a plant growth promoting rhizobacteria) and will compare their growth and production to untreated cowpeas. Excited to see how they grow and for all the nitrogen the cowpeas will add to the soil over the next few months.
