Livin' The Dream Farm

Livin' The Dream Farm Livin' The Dream Farm owned/operated by me! I am a female, first generation farmer! US Army Veteran Livin' The Dream Farm is a small family farm.

Our farming dream became a reality in 2015. The dream came from our kids and their involvement with
4-H. Each year we found that our kids wanted to try their hand at raising a new species and we began looking into the idea of moving so that we could support them in their dreams. We began to develop our farming plan which included selling our home of 11 years. Never did my husband and I imagine th

at at the age of 37 and 38 that we would be selling our home in the suburbs to move to the country to become farmers. Neither of us had any farming experience but we were willing to do all we could to support our kids! We have learned a lot through our successes and of course our failures. Farming is a tough life but a GREAT life that we wouldn't change for the world. Here we are livin' the dream. We raise Pygmy Goats, Nigerian Dwarfs, Holland Lop Rabbits, Netherland Dwarf Rabbits, Egg Layer Chickens, Broiler Chickens, Guinea Pigs, Guinea Fowl and, Turkeys, Hogs, Cows, and Clun Forest Sheep. We also have horses and offer riding lessons, training, horse leases and horse sales. We love spending time with each other and our animals.

I’m going with 9.5

Only because the goat slept NEXT to my bed and I bottle fed it while in bed with me but it didn’t actually sleep with me.

How about you?

How much does it actually cost a farmer to produce a dozen eggs?

This math was from a couple years ago so I’m sure it is more now

Copied from another page:

We have to change the rhetoric!

I like math, let’s do some:

PER HEN
$3.50 - pullet chick
$24.00 - chick starter (for 7 months)
$2.50 - nutrients supplement

Total $30 for a chick to 7 months old hen

7 months on for 2 years (prime laying) per hen
2lbs feed per week X 52 weeks a year for 2 years = 208 lbs fed.
208 lbs / by 50lb (per bag) = 4.16 bags fed
4.16 bags X $21.80 = $90.69 worth of feed

$90.69 + $30= $120.69 total

Let’s pretend the chicken for two years produce 400 eggs… average depends on breed.

$120.69/400= $.3017
$.3017 X 12 = $3.62 PER DOZEN

Now add in: equipment, heat, bedding, fencing, water, time, electricity, predation … etc!!

That’s $3.62 a dozen without the add ins… TO BREAK EVEN.

Let’s change this rhetoric going around let’s try:

“I can’t believe I paid $5 for these corporate garbage quality eggs from a supermarket”

Or better yet:

“I can’t believe I ONLY paid $5 for these locally produced, high quality eggs”

It’s just not sustainable.

As baby chick season approaches and the price of eggs keep rising, I’m sure a lot of people are tempted to raise chickens themselves. Before people flock (no pun intended 🤣) to their local farm store and start buying all the baby chicks please consider the following 10 fun facts….

1. Most hens do not start laying eggs until 18-22 weeks of age (that’s about 5 months give or take)

2. For the first few weeks of their lives baby chickens need to be kept at a temperature of around 95 degrees Fahrenheit

3. Chicks need to eat…SURPRISE! And like the price of everything else chicken feed has went up. A 50lb bag of layer is over $20.

4. Chickens molt…what does that mean? Your chicken will become ugly and stop laying eggs for a period of time.

5. Chickens don’t lay as many eggs in the winter months.

6. The average lifespan of a chicken is 5-10 years.

7. Predators such as foxes, coyotes, neighbor’s dogs and even raccoons will hunt your chickens.

8. Chickens will p**p EVERYWHERE and I mean everywhere so be prepared to clean their pen often or if they are free range be sure to check your step or look before you sit.

9. Chickens love to dig holes and destroy bedding around flowers in the yard, good luck keeping them from doing so.

10. Chickens can get medical issues just like any other animal.

I’m not trying to discourage anyone from raising their own food in fact I think it’s great. However chickens are animals, animals that require attention and proper care.

So while I get that you don’t want to spend $7 on a dozen eggs double think your decision before you go gung ho on being a chicken farmer. Just do your research, it’s not like getting a fish 🤦🏼‍♀️

Sincerely,
A fellow chicken owner

To blanket or not to blanket, the age old question

https://www.totalequinevets.com/client-center/resources/TEVApedia/blanket-or-not-blanket

If you choose to blanket, be sure you are changing blankets regularly. There isn’t a one size fits all for temperatures. If your blanket is too thick it will cause your horse to sweat and ultimately become cold and more likely to get rain rot. You may need to have 3-5 different blankets and change every few hours to align with the temperature.
