It’s that time of year, where the critters are starting to move around. If your dog gets stomped, try this! It works great, I can vouch for it. My daughter’s dog got sprayed by a skunk in the face and mouth, and this took the skunk spray off of him so that you could barely smell it if he was wet. It takes two quarts for an 85 lb dog.

Dynamic duo Ellie and Zeke went home yesterday! They both did great for their owners for their lesson. They will be more doing lessons with Zeke to help shape him into the best pup he can be!
Just like human kids, puppies need plenty of sleep to be happy, healthy, and able to learn. After a good romp around the yard and a potty break it’s time for a nap!

Baby Zeke is working on his impulse control! The lesson learned here is that just because I have food doesn’t mean that you get to take it from me or try to steal it. If you sit politely and look at me instead of my sandwich, I will give you some of your yummy food. Rinse and repeat and Zeke learns that it’s much better to sit and wait that it is to try to just snag whatever he wants when people are eating. Good job, baby Zeke!

We will be working on crate training, walking on a leash, good manners, the housebreaking schedule, and learning a few basic commands. Zeke lives with Ellie, a super sweet, golden retriever girl that I trained a couple years ago. Ellie will be coming in in a few days for a training brush up. It’s very common when you add a dog to the mix for your other good dogs to regress a little bit. no worries, we are here to help!
A good article on compromise and communication for a household that is struggling with being consistent with training. I see this often, one person is bothered by a dogs behavior, others are fine with it. It’s important that a household works together towards their common goals.

Say hi to the busy 🐝, Charlie! Charlie’s owner has done some training with her, but has struggled with impulse control and having Charlie hold commands. No worries, we can help! Here Charlie is working on staying on place. The idea of the place command is that is a spot for her to lay down and relax and let life go by. Relaxation doesn’t come naturally too many dogs, no problem that’s why we teach them. Charlie is here for a two week, on leash boarding & train. She will be staying with us a week, going home a couple weeks, and then coming back for her final week. This works around some travel plans and helps her get a good start on her training.
I think of this when people ask if my Rottweilers think they are lap dogs. I say, they don’t think they are, they know they are. ❤️
Happy Birthday to my first Rottweiler, Arlo! He’s a grand old 7 yrs old today! Arlo is my oldest daughter’s dog now, he happily lives with her little German shorthair pointer.

Stay warm out there! For extra precautions in these abnormal temps, take your pup out to potty on leash. I don’t recommend potty pads but it’s not the worst in this weather, especially for small or very young dogs. Check their paws for damage and be sure to wipe off any salt or ice melt.
Look at this rockstar team! This one of my clients. She has two working line border collies. She has owned border collie mixes before, but they were not to be compared with the drive and energy level of her working line dogs. She is a skilled trainer who has done a phenomenal job on her own. Her dogs struggled with reliability, holding commands, reactivity and overexcitement. We've been working together doing lessons, and she is doing an amazing job. I'm providing the instruction, but she is doing all the good work at home that is leading to her success. This is our fourth session and no, it is not normal to be able to take a dog this far this fast. I am able to with this client because she has already done so much work with her obedience and training. A fellow trainer and friend came out with her cattle dog to help and work as a distraction. Kiowa the cattle dog delights at barking at other dogs. Few things make her as happy. And she stops on command which makes her an excellent training aid.
Many of you have met my Rottweiler girls, Leeta and Zeno. What some of you may not know is I am starting a breeding program with my girls. If all goes well, Leeta will be having puppies in a couple months. If you or anyone you know, is interested in adding a well bred, well raised, health tested Rottweiler to their family, please have them reach out. Puppies will be raised with puppy culture. If you’re not familiar with that, you should definitely check it out. It’s an early neurological stimulation program that helps build a dog that is physically and mentally strong. Puppies will also be started on crate training, house, training, walking on a leash, and other things that just make it so much easier as a new puppy owner. If I could change one thing for every dog, it would be that they are raised with a system like puppy culture. I will offer my lifelong support as their breeder and as a trainer too!

It made me think of how often I am told that I am lucky my dogs are so good. My dog’s behavior has nothing to do with luck. It is a lot of hard work training and exposing my dogs in different situations. It is thousands of repetitions for the same handful of commands. It’s rewarding when I need to and correcting when I need to. It’s not magic, it’s not because I’m a dog trainer, it’s because I’m consistent! And you can do it too!
Sweet Sophie went home yesterday. We went to the pet store for some training and a bath. The extra week of training served her well, her owner and I will continue with a few lessons. Most dogs don’t need extra time or lessons but Sophie is a special case. She’s very bright and can be pretty pushy, therefore she requires more training than your average pet. I’m looking forward to seeing her grow and mature!

Sophie said fitness isn’t a choice, it’s a lifestyle. Any time I’m putting her away or when I get her out she tries to get on the treadmill. Girl loves her a good trot on that treadmill. Sophie has big feelings about possessing things. Rottweilers are a guardian breed, this is normal behavior. They key is to teach her to release the thing on command and to learn that playing with me is way more fun than just hoarding a toy. Here I’m working on her Out command. This means let go of what’s in your mouth. Outing does not mean the fun stops though! When she puts and gives me eye contact, we start playing again! This way she learns that the way to get me to keep playing is to give me the toy when asked. Sophie is a bright girl and caught on quick! #yourdogjustbetter #goforthk9 #edmonddogtrainer
Sophie! Sophie needs her obedience training, but more importantly, Sophie needs to be trained in impulse control and taking her lead from the people in her life. It’s pretty easy to teach most dogs to sit or down, but the challenging bit is getting them to continue holding a sit, or a down under distraction. Or for Sophie, to give me the thing that she wants to play with instead of running around and mouthing it. Sophie is an energetic, smart girl. She needs to work that brain for her physical and mental health. This work can include her obedience training and impulse control. I think she would also excel in some type of sport like nose, work or competition obedience. Her energy level and drive to do makes her a good candidate for sport. Even if her owner doesn’t want to do an official sport, she can do all kinds of fun things at home to help work Sophie’s brain and desire to work. Working on rhat recall! Why so close? Because it your dog won't come to you from 2-4 feet away they definitely won't come to you from 40 feet away. By doing short, easy reps Gracie is learning the pattern of come, sit, REWARD! When she’s good at a short distance we can then start working it from farther away. Tank is in the home stretch! His owners came for a lesson yesterday. Due to the heat we stayed inside and worked on using the e collar and Tank staying calm when exciting things are going on. I taught Tanks owners how to play tug with him. It seems odd to need to be taught how to play tug. With a dog as big as Tank, you want to be able to play tug on your terms. This means he bites on the tug where you want him to, let’s go when told, and that Tank gets to win pretty much every time he plays tug. By letting him win it’s a lot more fun for Tank! If he lost every time, why would he want to play? By tje owner letting him win and immediately re-engaging and playing with him, Tank learns the value isn’t in the toy, but in the owner. Did some e collar conditioning with Tank and he had a blast! I was working at a level eight, the e collar goes from 1 to 100. It makes it very customizable for the individual dog. The beep you hear is when I am applying the e collar stim. So e collar stim, name, command, then help the dog get on place. This teaches the dog how to turn the e collar stim off by complying with a command. The dog learns it is in control of the e collar stim, that stim is not a random sensation that happens sometimes. E collars are wonderful tools but you need to be fair in their use. #yourdogjustbetter #goforthk9 #edmonddogtrainer
