THE POWER OF A MICROCHIP
We wanted to share a Monday Miracle story about the power of the MICROCHIP! Meet King. Last week around 2pm, our clinic received a call about a stray dog with no tags that was found in the Edmond area by one of our clients. This huge boy was emaciated, yet extremely friendly, and even joined our client for her entire 4 mile run and followed her all the way back to her home. She loaded him up and brought him to the clinic to be checked for a microchip. We successfully scanned him with our microchip wand, plugged in the microchip number online; and we got a hit on the potential owner’s information, location, and name of the pet! We left a short voicemail on the phone number we were provided, letting the owner know that we had passed her info along to our client who would hold onto the dog and be getting in touch for pick-up. A short while later, we received a sweet update about King. King’s owner is a senior, local to the downtown OKC Capital area, who has been missing this boy since FEBRUARY!!! She had been calling multiple shelters for some weeks with no sign of King, and assumed the worst. Overjoyed by the news, she brought her daughter and 4 grandkids to get King back home. Lots of gratitude and tears of joy were shared by everyone. This interaction was caught on video surveillance, where you can hear the words “KING--King!!!! Thank you!! Thank you!!! THANK YOU! Can I give you a hug? Thank you so very much!!”, followed by the sound of awe of all the children. But, King was just as excited to hear this familiar voice call his name, as he sprinted to his family members in pure adoration. This is just one example of how important microchipping your pet can be. Remember to ALWAYS activate your microchip online updated with your personal information and emergency contact, and double check annually that it is still available in the event someone finds your pet! We provide microchipping at our clinic with an appointment, and would love to help scan some of your pets to make sure they already have one with updated info at any time. Thank you, , for contacting Family Pet Hospital and FINALLY helping reunite this family with their beloved fur baby! What an awesome outcome!

Opt for walks during cooler hours and stick to grassy areas when possible. Let's keep those paws cool and happy this summer!

Lato, a 2 ½ year old French bulldog, became a member of our clinic on 5/30/24, as she was displaying symptoms such as: vomiting, low appetite, weight loss, and lethargy. Her owners tried several at-home care options with no luck, and decided to ultimately bring her in for a check-up. Dr. Herron was selfless, coming in on her day off, and did a 3 hour exploratory surgery on Lato; finding that this poor pup had swallowed a squeaker out of a toy, resulting in removing 10 inches of Lato’s intestines! If 48 more hours had gone by, that squeaker would’ve perforated the intestines. Lato was never known to chew, shred, or swallow toys in the past; so this took the owners for a whirlwind of shock. After removing the squeaker, and 10inches of her intestines, Lato received a 50/50 chance at survival. When hearing Lato’s diagnosis, her owners felt a storm of emotions. They were struck with heartbreak & guilt, and felt as if they had failed as fur-parents. Lato was referred to an ICU, where she spent a couple days healing from the surgery.
Lato’s recovery was long & hard, but she fought with everything she had and did not give up despite her chances at survival! The owners were able to keep their faith by praying, the overflowing support from the clinic, constant updates, and knowing Lato was in the best of hands & spirits with her medical team. The scariest part of their journey was getting the news that Lato received a 50/50 chance at life, this absolutely broke the owner’s heart. The best part of their journey, seeing the light come back into Lato’s eyes! As well as always getting consistent updates with good news, one being that she was one of the most stable animals in the ER & could even come home a bit early! After recovery, Lato is now doing great & back to her normal sassy self! She is energetic, gaining weight, and full of life again. She enjoys rough-housing, playing with her pal Snoop, running/jumping, and of course getting the zoomies.
The Pardee’s experience at Family Pet Hospital was “Absolutely amazing!” The owners felt beyond welcomed by the team, and surrounded by support & love. They felt as if everyone made them feel comfortable, seen, and heard. The staff was very helpful & informative through the entire process, always explaining in detail-and receiving constant updates while Lato was in clinic. Dr. Colley helped find a great ICU within budget, and was super invested in her patient. “We suggest Family Pet Hospital to anybody who is unsure of choosing their veterinarian clinic, because they are very professional and provide the best care. Amazing people all-around!”
Their advice to other fur-parents is to always be mindful of your pet’s safety! Never feel guilty if your pet has a medical issue, and always stay cautiously optimistic in the event one happens. Never lose faith in your pet, or your veterinarian! They want to remind other pet owners that this could happen to anybody in the blink of an eye; no squeakers, shreddable, or small toys should be left with pets unattended. They would also say, never second guess the doctors because they love these babies as their own, and will try any and everything to save them! The clinic was very caring and also respectful of financial hardships. “Never be afraid to be honest with your vet, they are there to help give you & your pet the best care needed!” Congratulations, and Welcome to our ever-growing family, Lato!!
