With the predicted ice/snow we have had a few questions about what to do with your aquarium in the event of a power outage. The easiest preparation is to have a battery powered air pump to keep water aeration going(we do have a few left in stock).

The next biggest concern in the winter is of course water temperatures. Most battery backups are not capable of running heaters for more than a very short time(if at all) so if you do not have a generator then in a power outage it is a good idea to wrap the tank with blankets or something similar to keep it insulated and prevent as much heat from escaping as possible. If you do not have a battery air pump you don't want to seal the top too tightly however as you do need air exchange. On small and medium size tanks hand warmer packs taped to the outside of the glass can do surprisingly well at slowing down the temperature decline.
