What's a Dogventure? We are SO glad you asked..😏

Our dogs need a change of scenery, a break from their kennels, a chance to recharge and live life to the fullest outside of the shelter while they wait for adoption. Our Dogventure Program is a short-term foster program that allows you to "check out" a shelter dog for an afternoon, a night or even a weekend for a slumber pawty!

Good boy Onyx was moved over to our Highland shelter yesterday and our Highland volunteers are already in love!

"Just met this perfect boy in Highland at Metro East Humane Society. Onyx is so well behaved and calm. Loved his walk even in this crazy wind! Another new favorite!"

Every single volunteer who has interacted with this dog says the same thing: he's perfect!!

Onyx does well with calmer dogs and cats. He's the perfect candidate for a first time dog owner or a family with kiddos.

This 6 month old, 40 lbs. pup went from being pancaked to our lobby floor out of fear and barely able to walk around the building, to walking like a confident queen that's learning how to be a dog. Bloom's transformation has been one of our favorites to watch!

We are currently seeking applicants to fill part-time positions focused on the care of our animals and adoption support. Previous experience handling animals and interacting with the public is preferred. Responsibilities include general care of animals, walking dogs, conducting adoptions and basic clerical duties.

Candidates must be available for shifts 7-11 AM, 2-5 PM or 9 AM to 5 PM with the possibility of weekend and holiday shifts. Minimum wage. Must be 18 years or older to apply.

If you've come through our vaccine clinic or spay/neuter clinic, chances are you've interacted with Lysa! Lysa is one of our amazing Vet Techs! Lysa left MEHS for a little bit and then came back to us. Her total combined time at MEHS is about 8 years now!!

Today, we're celebrating one of the sweetest and giggliest people you'll ever meet. Lysa is incredibly hard-working and someone we can always count on.

Meet Kane! Or as we like to call him, Goofy boy! He's referred to as goofy because he has the silliest personality and does the silliest things, like sleeping UNDER his bed like a scared cat....not because he's scared but because that's just who he is. 🤪

This little man is good with other dogs and loves to play with them! He is 10 months old and still has the energy of a puppy. Despite being younger, he is very good on a leash! He so great on leash that he even enjoys trying to take his fellow dog friends on a walk!

Hughie is like a little turtle. He pokes his head out of his hidey bed for pets and head rubs but is quick to retreat when he's done.

Hughie is only 9 months old and is scared of his own shadow. As he's spent more time with us, he's slowly been coming out of his turtle shell. We feel he'll be happiest out of the shelter environment and in a home.

While this guy doesn't have the smooth and charming voice that Frank Sinatra had, he will still charm his way into your heart! Sinatra is 6 years old and 60 lbs. He enjoys being around other dogs, could see him living fine in a home with cats and would probably thrive with human siblings.

Sometimes, love finds you when and how you least expect it. Lenny & Georgie were strangers a matter of a few weeks ago when Stephanie first met Georgie (then Comet). What started as a foster home for our sweet senior boy has turned into sleepovers every night in his forever home with his best bud. And Lenny got a new pillow! If only every dog could be so lucky.
