Meet the Sandfish Skink!

Also known as the "sand swimmer," the sandfish skink is a fascinating little reptile that literally swims through sand! Native to the deserts of North Africa and the Middle East, these skinks have sleek, shiny scales that help reduce friction as they dive and glide beneath the surface like a fish in water. 🏜️

✨ Fun Facts:
✅ They’re not fish at all — they’re lizards!
✅ Their movement through sand helps them escape predators and regulate body temperature.
✅ Their scales help repel sand and reduce water loss, making them desert survival pros.
✅ They have strong, shovel-like snouts and short limbs perfect for digging.
✅ Their diet mainly includes small insects like crickets and mealworms.

💡 In Captivity:
Sandfish skinks are relatively low-maintenance pets with simple needs:
🌡️ A warm, dry environment
🦗 A diet of live insects
🌞 UVB lighting for bone and skin health
🏖️ A deep layer of fine, clean sand for burrowing

They’re shy but fun to observe, especially when they “disappear” into the sand in seconds!

🐸💨 Red-Leg Running Frogs – The Frogs That Don’t Hop!

Say hello to the Red-Leg Running Frog – a unique little amphibian that prefers to walk or run rather than hop like most frogs! Native to parts of sub-Saharan Africa, these quirky creatures are also called spotted reed frogs because of their beautiful black spots and reddish leg markings. 🐾

✨ Cool Frog Facts:
✅ Instead of jumping, they use a weird “walk” or “run” motion to move around – it looks like a tiny frog jog!
✅ Their legs are marked with a reddish-orange color that gives them their common name.
✅ They are nocturnal and love to hide during the day and explore at night.
✅ These frogs have soft, velvety skin and are excellent climbers thanks to sticky toe pads.
✅ They make chirping or squeaky calls, especially during breeding season!

🌿 In Captivity:
Red-Leg Running Frogs are becoming more popular in the exotic pet world. Here’s what they need:
🌡️ Temps around 72–80°F with some humidity
🍃 A bioactive or semi-aquatic setup with hides and plants
🦗 A varied diet of small insects like fruit flies and pinhead crickets
🌙 Low lighting – they’re nighttime explorers!

They’re peaceful, low-maintenance, and super fun to watch – especially when they start “running” around their tank!

Our Story

In the year 2000, a little girl named Molly dreamed of one day having a pet shoppe better than the rest in her town. Even at the young age of 12, she knew she could give critters the care they deserve, and her father knew it too. Inspired by the twinkle in her eye and heart on her sleeve, Gayland Bourland left his career in furniture to make his daughters wish a reality. Almost two decades later, it’s no surprise that Molly, now with a degree in animal science, has joined her father in running Noah’s Ark Pet Shoppe. Even her son, Elijah, is in on the gig, providing love and care to the future pets of Effingham. With amphibians, birds, and furballs galore, we have everything you need to make your child’s dream come true.
