Behind the Scenes: Dental Care for Our Furry Friends
Did you know that animals don’t have a tooth fairy? 🧚🏼♀️ But fortunately for them, as owners and vet care professionals, we can assume that role by providing the care and treatment they need in maintaining a healthy mouth throughout their years spent by our side. Assisting in dental care is one of the most important things we can do for our animals.
Take for instance, our resident hospital cat, Joey, also known as Six Toe Joe. Even Joey gets his teeth cleaned yearly to assure his mouth is in tip-top shape. During one of our regular exams (we do these so our clinic kitties don’t feel left out), we found a suspicious anomaly to the crown of one of his premolars (picture #4).
Today, we anesthetized him, took full mouth dental radiographs (Pictures 1 and 2), and found a resorptive lesion to 407 on the lower right quadrant. These lesions are very painful and require treatment. In Joey’s case, x-rays showed some disintegration to the crown and a near total loss of distinction between the roots and jawbone (picture 3).
To treat this, a flap was created in the surrounding tissue, a modified extraction was performed, and the flap was surgically closed with suture (picture 5). Joey received a topical pain medication that will make him comfortable for the next few days while he heals. We will continue to monitor the site as he recovers (the sutures will dissolve so no need for removal!) but generally, kitties do very well once the affected teeth are treated.
The three most common dental diseases in cats are gingivitis, periodontitis, and tooth resorption, and the severity of each of these conditions can vary significantly. Many cats do not display signs of dental disease that their owners can detect. The best way to see underlying issues in the mouth, is to take x-rays (intraoral radiographs), which require your pet to be under general anesthesia. If you have questions or concerns about your animals oral health, please reach out to us and we would be happy to guide you in the right direction.
